CONFERENCE: 60 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: the Defenders Take the Floor European Parliament Brussels 7-8 October, 2008 “So each time I go there, people tell me things. They do so in the sincere hope that, if I record what is actually happening, it will lead to change, to peace. Obviously, I am not to blame for what is going on, but the more I think about it, the more I would be betraying these people if I walked away. The only thing to do is to take this to the bitter end, so that no one can say that when things became difficult, I ran away.” Anna Politkovskaya Rama Yade, French Minister of State responsible for Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Executive Summary The inter-institutional initiative launched by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the United Nations to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) reaffirmed and illustrated its recognised universality and transcendence. Divided into two panels, one focussing on the instruments for the protection of Human Rights and the other on the right to freedom of expression, the conference highlighted the singular admiration for all those working for other's rights. Tuesday 7 October Opening Speeches Mr Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission, opened the conference by underlying the importance of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Declaration as cornerstones of the defence of human rights worldwide. He recalled that the EU has aligned itself with the protection of those defending human rights through the approval of the EU Guidelines on HRDs.

Rekha Rodwittiya The Rituals of Memory: Personal Folklores and Other Tales Aicon Gallery Exhibition February 4th – February 27th, 2016 Press Preview & Opening Reception: Thursday, February 4th 6:00pm – 9:00pm 35 Great Jones St., New York NY 10012 Aicon Gallery New York is proud to announce Rekha Rodwittiya – The Rituals of Memory: Personal Folklores and Other Tales, the first major showing of the artist’s work in New York City in two decades. A pioneering feminist artist and voice from the Indian subcontinent, Rodwittiya rose to prominence throughout the 80s and 90s through her strikingly idiosyncratic depictions of female forms, rituals and spaces. Drawn from both the personal experiences and memories of her own feminist journey and the larger historical struggles of women through the centuries, her work was an early rejection of the tropes of a male dominated South Asian art world and its traditionally voyeuristic treatment of the female subject. This exhibition is the second in a series of exhibitions re-examining figuration in Modern and Contemporary South Asian art to be held at Aicon Gallery, New York over the next two years. Rekha Rodwittiya’s iconic, starkly delineated female figures are often viewed as concrete embodiments of the artist’s complex psychological insights into the personal and historical struggles and day-to-day challenges of modern womanhood. The simply rendered yet powerful, sometimes confrontational, figures in Rekha Rodwittiya, Rekha @ 50, 2008, Acrylic and oil on these works seem to simultaneously stand as symbols of an canvas, 84 x 60 in. ongoing struggle in the feminist realm, while refusing to be reduced to objects for visual consumption or easy interpretation.

  • Interdependence: Joining Cinema and Art to Raise Awareness on Climate Change
INTERDEPENDENCE: JOINING CINEMA AND ART TO RAISE AWARENESS ON CLIMATE CHANGE Geneva (23rd September 2019), Eleven internationally recognised filmmakers have collaborated to raise awareness on the effects of climate change, each producing a short film. The shorts have been compiled into one powerful and unique film, spanning the genres of docufiction, drama, comedy, SciFi and video-art. The final piece explores the urgent need to reduce our environmental impact on the planet, and to preserve its natural resources. Re-appropriating the idea of ‘interdependence’ through creative expression enables us to reflect on the relationship between humankind and nature, and understand our existence within, rather than above, nature. The stories narrated by the filmmakers reflect the intertwined relations between society and the environment, and explore the many levels on which these relations are affected through climate change. Produced in co-partnership with the ITC Ethical Fashion Initiative, the films were shot in eleven countries around the world. They exist as single short films in their original language and as part of a 90-minute feature film, subtitled in English, French and Italian. Participants were selected for their strong artistic qualities, as well as their commitment to addressing the issue of climate change: FAOUZI BENSAÏDI (FRANCE/MOROCCO), ÁSA HJÖRLEIFSDÓTTIR (ICELAND), SALOME LAMAS (PORTUGAL), BETTINA OBERLI (SWITZERLAND), SHAHRBANOO SADAT (AFGHANISTAN), LEON WANG (CHINA), NILA MADHAB PANDA (INDIA). After the World Première at the Film Festival of Rome on the 22nd October 2019, Interdependence will be screened in November as Special Event by the City of Milan and the Foundation Cariplo at the Cinema Anteo in Milan, followed by the UN Première at the UN Office in Geneva and as the Asia Première at the 50th Anniversary of the International Film Festival of India, Goa.

  • Independent Curator and Film Producer, Αdelina Von Fürstenberg, Is
Independent curator and film producer, Αdelina von Fürstenberg, is director and founder of Art for The World, a non-governmental organization founded in 1996 with a view to use art as a social force. This same belief has driven von Fürstenberg's career, which spans decades and first found inspiration in Harald Szeeman's Documenta 5. In this interview, von Fürstenberg discusses the 4th Thessaloniki Biennale, of which she was Chief Curator. For the exhibition, she looked at the Mediterranean Sea as a geographical space layered with histories and relations. Von Fürstenberg then discusses some of the influences behind her curatorial career, while looking back on the origins of Art for the World and the exhibitions it has produced worldwide. (foreground) Maria Papdimitriou, (background) Marta Dell’Angelo Stephanie Bailey: I wanted to talk about how the geographical and historical context of Thessaloniki fed into your conceptualization of the 4th Thessaloniki Biennale's central exhibition. You take into account the location of Thessaloniki being on the Mediterranean Sea and on the border with Turkey; essentially between east and west. You also consider the cultural make up and legacy of the city itself, with the long historical presence of Italian, Armenian and Jewish communities here, from as far back as to antiquity. Adelina von Fürstenberg: I believe that each of us is related to a place, and that our ideas come from our personal biographies. Everything comes from inside yourself. Then of course it becomes universal and then you can engage in dialogue. But first and foremost, when someone asks you where you are from, you answer specifically.
