An Anthem for Sad Girls Who Don't Know Heartbreak, but Do Know The
An Anthem for Sad Girls Who Don’t Know Heartbreak, But Do Know the Bible Hannah Gordon You are my sweetest downfall Regina Spektor I loved you first, I loved you first “Samson” The first time I heard “Samson” by Regina Spektor, I cried. Begin to Hope I’m sure you did, too. It’s just that kind of song. 06/2006 Sire I was in my best friend Rebecca’s bedroom, staring at the ceiling fan going round and round, and pretending I was someone else. We were drinking her parents’ liquor—too much Jack mixed with not enough Coke—and texting boys with our plans to sneak out later that night. All of our weekends were spent like this, so we knew that we’d never actually follow through with it. We’d end up re-watching Pride and Prejudice or Breakfast at Tiffany’s, just drunk enough to feel dizzy and fall asleep early. In the morning, we’d make banana pancakes doused in maple syrup, lumpy and sticky sweet. Hearing that song was a revelation. It was transcendent. Maybe it was all the Jack and Cokes. But maybe it wasn’t. At fifteen, I thought I knew heartbreak, if only vicariously: I’d read books, seen movies, and listened to songs like “Samson.” My aching, teenage heart would shatter anew with each fictional iteration of something I had yet to experience myself. This hurt, this pain— I thought it was the real thing. Or, at least, I thought it could compare. “What is this?” I asked her once the song finished. -
August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

“From Strange to Stranger”: the Problem of Romance on the Shakespearean Stage
“From strange to stranger”: The Problem of Romance on the Shakespearean Stage by Aileen Young Liu A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English and the Designated Emphasis in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Jeffrey Knapp, Chair Professor Oliver Arnold Professor David Landreth Professor Timothy Hampton Summer 2018 “From strange to stranger”: The Problem of Romance on the Shakespearean Stage © 2018 by Aileen Young Liu 1 Abstract “From strange to stranger”: The Problem of Romance on the Shakespearean Stage by Aileen Young Liu Doctor of Philosophy in English Designated Emphasis in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Jeffrey Knapp, Chair Long scorned for their strange inconsistencies and implausibilities, Shakespeare’s romance plays have enjoyed a robust critical reconsideration in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But in the course of reclaiming Pericles, The Winter’s Tale, Cymbeline, and The Tempest as significant works of art, this revisionary critical tradition has effaced the very qualities that make these plays so important to our understanding of Shakespeare’s career and to the development of English Renaissance drama: their belatedness and their overt strangeness. While Shakespeare’s earlier plays take pains to integrate and subsume their narrative romance sources into dramatic form, his late romance plays take exactly the opposite approach: they foreground, even exacerbate, the tension between romance and drama. Verisimilitude is a challenge endemic to theater as an embodied medium, but Shakespeare’s romance plays brazenly alert their audiences to the incredible. -
News Media Industry
Spring 2007 Industry Study Final Report News Media Industry The Industrial College of the Armed Forces National Defense University Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. 20319-5062 i NEWS MEDIA 2007 ABSTRACT: The ability of US citizens to freely express their views and opinions is a gift we must never take for granted. A key means by which our government and citizens communicate is the News Media. This critical industry is now experiencing tremendous change. Technological advances have led to an explosion in communication media that now provide consumers more news options than ever before. Traditional media such as newspapers, television and radio are being forced to develop digital media in order to maintain and attract a wider customer base. Historical advertising and business models are no longer adequate, but finding a replacement has proven difficult. This critical industry will survive the challenges of today, but the future state of the industry remains uncertain. Elizondo beskriver hur det var att arbeta med albumet ;“Regina Spektor is that rare artist that continues to surprise. Just when you think you have her figured out, she knocks you out with something completely different. It’s that spirit that drives this record. Each song takes you on a journey that only Regina is capable of providing. -
