Historical presence: the Armilla Patrol The UK has maintained a permanent naval presence in the Gulf region since October 1980, when the Armilla Patrol was established to ensure the safety of British entitled merchant ships operating in the region during the Iran-Iraq conflict. Initially the Royal Navy’s presence was focused solely in the Gulf of Oman. However, as the conflict wore on both nations began attacking each other’s oil facilities and oil tankers bound for their respective ports, in what became known as the “tanker war” (1984-1988). Kuwaiti vessels carrying Iraqi oil were particularly susceptible to Iranian attack and foreign-flagged merchant vessels were often caught in the crossfire.1 In response to a number of incidents involving British registered vessels, in October 1986 the Royal Navy began accompanying British-registered vessels through the Straits of Hormuz and in the Persian Gulf. Later the UK’s Armilla Patrol contributed to the Multinational Interception Force (MIF), a naval contingent patrolling the Persian Gulf to enforce the UN-mandated trade embargo against Iraq, imposed after its invasion of Kuwait in August1990.2 In the aftermath of the 2003 Iraq conflict, Royal Navy vessels, deployed as part of the Armilla Patrol, were heavily committed to providing maritime security in the region, the protection of Iraq’s oil infrastructure and to assisting in the training of Iraqi sailors and marines. 1.1 Assets The Type 42 destroyer HMS Coventry was the first vessel to be deployed as part of the Armilla Patrol, followed by RFA Olwen. -

Tac Talks Introduction It is a curious statistic of the First World War that more sailors and officers were killed in action on Minor War Vessels than on Major Fleet Units in all navies involved in the conflict. For a war synonymous with the Dreadnought arms race and the clash of Battleships at Jutland the gunboats of the Edwardian age proved to be the predominant weapon of naval warfare. These vessels, largely charged with constabulary duties pre-war, were quickly pressed into combat and played a critical role in a number of theatres rarely visited in the histories of WWI. I draw attention to this deliberately for the purpose of this article is to advocate for the exploitation of the current moment of change in the RAN Patrol Boat Group and configure it to better confront the very real possibility of a constabulary force being pressed into combat. This article will demonstrate that prior planning & training will create a lethal Patrol Group that poses a credible threat to all surface combatants by integrating guided weapons onto the Arafura Class. -

Is a Naval Architect an Atypical Designer – Or Just a Hull Engineer?
IS A NAVAL ARCHITECT AN ATYPICAL DESIGNER – OR JUST A HULL ENGINEER? David Andrews1 ABSTRACT As the demands for future ships become ever greater, due to economic pressures to achieve “value for money” and due to assumptions of more precision in potential ship solutions, then the question to be addressed is whether the naval architectural profession is still best placed to lead in designing complex ships. Other disciplines might be seen to be more relevant in meeting specific ship demands, such as the marine engineer in achieving better fuel efficiency and greener solutions or the combat systems engineer for future naval vessels. Beyond these two disciplines the complexity of particularly naval ship design has led to the generic project management discipline of systems engineering being promoted as more appropriate than naval architecture as the lead discipline. Thus the naval architect becomes a mere “hull engineer” practicing the specific “naval architectural” sub-disciplines, instead of being “primes inter pares” in managing ship design and acquisition. Such a proposal arises both from a belief that the whole ship safety issues need the senior most naval architect’s main attention and that systems engineering rather than the naval architect’s design skills are best for the overall management of design and acquisition due to its agnosticism with regards to the cross disciplinary conflicts that arise in such a highly interactive multi-disciplinary exercise. This issue is explored by considering what are the essential engineering skills employed by a naval architect as the ship equivalent, for large constructional projects, of a terrestrial civil engineer and whether this is just “hull engineering” or something more like the ship equivalent of an architect for major constructions, such as airport termini. -

High Commission of India Brunei Darussalam INDIA-BRUNEI BILATERAL RELATIONS Political Relations Diplomatic relations between India and Brunei were established on 10 May 1984. Prior to the establishment of the Resident Mission in Brunei on 18 May 1993, India's Mission in Kuala Lumpur was concurrently accredited to Brunei. Brunei set up its resident High Commission in India on 12 August 1992 headed by an Acting High Commissioner. Prior to that, Brunei's High Commissioner in Malaysia, was concurrently accredited to India. Brunei and India have shared close relations based on their strong traditional and cultural linkages and common membership of UN, NAM, Commonwealth, ASEAN etc. The Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei has been amongst the strongest votary of close relations with India and has supported and ensured the welfare of the Indian community in Brunei. The Government has been supportive of India’s ‘Look East Policy’ and ‘Act East Policy’ for expansion and deepening of cooperation with ASEAN. Brunei, as Country Coordinator for India in ASEAN from July 2012 till June 2015 played an important role in bringing India closer to ASEAN during its tenure. Brunei has been generally supportive of India and its nominees for elections to various international organisations. Exchange of visits by Head of State/Government: From Brunei: 1. Flower Power the Flower Class Corvettes Will Be Remembered For
Flower Power The Flower class corvettes will be remembered for playing a major role in the Battle of the Atlantic during WWII. These ships were used in the anti-submarine role against the U-Boats. They were hurriedly built, armed with obsolescent weapons and were outclassed by pre-war sloops and wartime frigates. In January 1939 a meeting took place between the Admiralty and Smith's Docks to discuss the design of a new A/S escort vessel. After dismissing enlarged trawler designs as too slow, it was agreed that Smith's recently built whaler Southern Pride offered the best design. However, some alterations were necessary and the original details were as follows: Displacement: 940 tons (standard), 1170 tons (full load) Length: 205 feet (oa) Armament: 1 x 4in BL Mk IX 2 x Twin Lewis .303 MGs 2 Depth-charge throwers (25 Dcs) Machinery: Single screw 4 cylinder vertical triple-expansion 2750 ihp = 16 kts Complement: 47 Fuel: 200 tons oil Endurance: 4000 miles at 12 kts Electronics: Wireless – 1 x Type TW12B Radar – SW1C Asdic – Type 123A MV Southern Pride There were two distinct groups of vessels in this class: the original Flower-class, 225 vessels ordered during the 1939 and 1940 building programs; and the modified Flower-class, which followed with a further 69 vessels ordered from 1940 onward. The modified Flowers were slightly larger and somewhat better armed. The original Flowers had the standard RN layout, consisting of a raised forecastle, a well deck, then the bridge or wheelhouse, and a continuous deck running aft. The crew quarters were in the foc'sle while the galley was at the rear, making for poor messing arrangements. -

(Tony) Ditcham DSC about his experience of the War at Sea: 1940–45 HAY FESTIVAL – 16.00 on Sunday 1st June 2014 Event 456 Tony Ditcham is 91 and leads a sociable, convivial life in Presteigne - a quiet country town in the Welsh borders, and a long way from the sea. However, in 1940 he was entered from HMS Worcester as a midshipman into the Royal Naval Reserve. Thereafter he served in every theatre of the European war at sea and eventually the Far East. Having been at sea for almost the entire period of the war, he was persuaded by Stephen Roskill some years later to write down his North Sea and Arctic convoy experiences as a junior officer for Naval Records. They were well received by Corelli Barnett and other leading naval historians, so much so that he was further induced to complete his recollections of the remaining part of the war, and the result was turned into a beautifully published book in 2012. There are plenty of books on the subject by senior naval officers, he considered, but few by a junior one – ‘there may be a little merit in the worm’s eye view’, he wrote. A Home on the Rolling Main by AGF Ditcham has enjoyed remarkable success and has subsequently been republished in softback by Seaforth Publishing (part of Pen and Sword). The book’s reception went far beyond what is usual in such cases, being hailed by admirals and historians alike. -

By Tom Dykes (C) 2015 INTRODUCTION As the 20th Century fades more and more into our collective memory, it is still important for educators to examine the great and violent confrontations that have made the century one of humanities bench marks for destruction, and paradoxically, the development of amazing leaps in social, cultural and technological developments. The Battle of the Atlantic was conducted for 69 months over the reaches of millions of square miles of the Atlantic Ocean and its adjunctive seas. It was an area of conflict that was conducted from the tropics to the arctic, and was the confrontational realm that held the key to the resolution of what we call World War II. Without the free passage of strategic materiel and men from North America, Britain would not survive the Nazi onslaught. Without that same resource and resolve, Russia, would not have received the aid that contributed to its ability to hold and finally repel the German invaders. In short, who controlled the Atlantic would ultimately dictate the outcome of the war.
