Few People Realize the Extent to Which Japanese People Have Interacted with and Been Influenced by African Americans and Their History
positions Beyond an Alliance of Color: The African American Impact on Modern Japan Yukiko Koshiro Few people realize the extent to which Japanese people have interacted with and been influenced by African Americans and their history. Japanese high school students today at least read excerpts from original works by Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Martin Luther King Jr., and Marian Anderson in Ministry of Education–approved Eng- lish textbooks.1 Yet no Japanese history book pays homage to those African Americans who have played a substantial role in U.S.-Japanese relations since their earliest phase: Pyrrus Concer, a former slave who came to Japan before Commodore Perry;2 Carrie Wilson, the daughter of a former slave from Missouri, who married Masumizu Kuninosuke, an early Japanese set- tler in the famed Wakamatsu Colony in Sacramento, California, together with whom she heralded a history of Japanese immigrants of African Amer- ican heritage;3 or the Philadelphia Royal Giants of the Negro League who positions 11:1 © 2003 by Duke University Press Published by Duke University Press positions positions 11:1 Spring 2003 184 visited Japan in 1927, four years earlier than the (all-white) All Star Ameri- can Major League baseball team.4 Ever since the American media played up derogatory remarks on African Americans by Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party politicians in the 1980s, the public seems to refuse to think any further, but take it for granted that all Japanese are racists who avoid contacts with African American people. It is time to bring to light long-ignored Japanese readings of African American history, literature, and struggle and investigate why the story of Japanese interactions with African Americans has been muted rather than celebrated.5 There are some reasons for the silence. -

KWAME NKRUMAH, HIS AFRO-AMERICAN NETWORK AND THE PURSUIT OF AN AFRICAN PERSONALITY EMMANUELLA AMOH 105 Pages This thesis explores the pursuit of a new African personality in post-colonial Ghana by President Nkrumah and his African American network. I argue that Nkrumah’s engagement with African Americans in the pursuit of an African Personality transformed diaspora relations with Africa. It also seeks to explore Black women in this transnational history. Women are not perceived to be as mobile as men in transnationalism thereby underscoring their inputs in the construction of certain historical events. But through examining the lived experiences of Shirley Graham Du Bois and to an extent Maya Angelou and Pauli Murray in Ghana, the African American woman’s role in the building of Nkrumah’s Ghana will be explored in this thesis. -

E. B. Du Bois and the Vision of Africa’s Past Tracey Lynn Thompson Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2011 Abstract Scholars have examined many aspects of W. E. B. Du Bois’s project of empowering oppressed peoples in the United States and around the world. However they have treated in only a fragmentary way one of the principal strategies that he used to counter hegemonic ideologies of African and African American inferiority. That strategy was to turn to the evidence of history. Here I argue that Du Bois, alerted by Franz Boas to Africans’ historical attainments, confronted claims made by European Americans that Africans and a fortiori African Americans lacked any achievement independent of European or other foreign influence. Du Bois linked African Americans to Africa and laid out repeatedly and in detail a narrative of autonomous African historical accomplishment. I demonstrate that his approach to the history of Africa constituted a radical departure from the treatment of Africa presented by scholars located in the mainstream of contemporary anglophone academic thought. I argue that while his vision of Africa’s history did not effect any significant shift in scholarly orthodoxy, it played a crucial role, at a grave juncture in race relations in the United States, in helping to equip young African Americans with the psychological resources necessary to challenge white supremacist systems. -

Harrison Papers Languages of material English, French, Latin Biographical Note Born April 27, 1883, in Concordia, St. Croix, Danish West Indies, Hubert H. Harrison was a brilliant and influential writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist in Harlem during the early decades of the 20th century. He played unique, signal roles, in what were the largest class radical movement (socialism) and the largest race radical movement (the New Negro/Garvey movement) of his era. Labor and civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph described him as “the father of Harlem radicalism” and historian Joel A. Rogers considered him “the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time” and “one of America’s greatest minds.” Following his December 17, 1927, death due to complications of an appendectomy, Harrison’s important contributions to intellectual and radical thought were much neglected. In 1900 Harrison moved to New York City where he worked low-paying jobs, attended high school, and became interested in freethought and socialism. His first of many published letters to the editor appeared in the New York Times in 1903. During his first decade in New York the autodidactic Harrison read and wrote constantly and was active in Black intellectual circles at St. -

Following Their Footsteps: Tracing Puerto Ricans’ Sociopolitical Activism in New York City from an Afro-Centric Perspective* by Milagros Denis-Rosario, Ph.D. Department of Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies Hunter College-CUNY Professor Denis-Rosario ([email protected]) earned a Ph.D. in Latin American and Caribbean history from Howard University, a Master’s degree in Africana Studies from Cornell University and a B.A. in Art History from the University of Puerto Rico. She is currently working on her manuscript, “Drops of Inclusivity: Racial Equations and Meanings in Puerto Rican Society, 1898-1960,” which is a historical analysis of race in Puerto Rican society. Abstract Many studies stress that Puerto Ricans do not fit into the American racial binary of “black or white,” and that because of this “uniqueness” the Puerto Rican racial experience should be measured differently. This work evaluates the activities of the black Puerto Ricans who arrived and settled in New York City. Although they confronted issues of adaptation, racism, and persistent poverty, they forged an identity in ways that resonate with the experience and perspective of Arturo Schomburg, a black Puerto Rican and a pioneer of the Africa-centered tradition. As a historian, I review the life and work of Schomburg and examine his perspective on the central role of Africa and its descendants in the history of the world, giving voice to Afro- descendants’ quest to preserve their culture wherever they are. I also review the philosophy of C. Tsehloane Keto, who posited the centrality of African history in interpreting the experience of people of African descent in the U.S. -

1 W.E.B. DU BOIS EDUCATING STILL “As the decades pass, the appreciation of Du Bois will grow.” Herbert Aptheker, 1989 How does one relate to a legend? Because Du Bois’s accomplishments, and his life‐long commitment to racial, social, and human progress are legendary, i.e., journalist and editor; educator and researcher; historian and sociologist; lecturer and dramatist; political and social activist and, above all, writer (of singular grade and depth; writer of precision and prophecy in that his famous declaration, “the problem of the twentieth century is the color line,” accurately foretold the racial essence of the era that was only then unfolding. (Many people associate that analysis with DuBois’s 1903 classic, The Souls of Black Folk. But, in reality, the prediction came even earlier: at the Pan African Conference in London in 1900 when Du Bois authored the conference’s appeal “To the Nations of the World.”) But it was not only Du Bois’s prediction that came true, Aptheker’s did as well. In the twilight of his life, Du Bois was invited to Ghana by Kwame Nkrumah to continue working on the Encyclopedia Africana project that he had originally embarked upon a half‐century before. And after his death, in the late Sixties and early Seventies, recognition came in the form of youthful leftist groups who called themselves the Du Bois clubs. Meanwhile, outside the city of Berlin, commemorating its 600 year anniversary in 1989 by publishing a monograph entitled, Welcome to Berline: Das Image Berlins in der englischsprachigen Welt von 1700 bis Heute. -

Introduction Many of us remain unaware that among the members of the American Philological Association (Society for Classical Studies since 2014) during the latter half of the nine- teenth century were people of African and African American descent, for little or noth- ing had been written about them before the American Philological Association published my pamphlet, The First Three African American Members of the American Philological Association in 2001. We have, however, understood for some time that Americans from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century were engaged in heated argu- ments about the appropriate type of education needed by Americans in general, and particularly over the needs of the newly-freed slaves after the Civil War. What we had not yet realized was that these were also concerns among members of the black diasporic community itself, which understood that the study of ancient Greek and Latin had long been the intellectual standard
