The elevations of the land surface in the district vary from 340 m in south-eastern part to 1041 m above sea level (ASL) in eastern part of the district. There are three hill ranges i.e. Chamukha Dhar with maximum elevation of 1041 m amsl which borders with district Hamirpur, Dhionsar Dhar with maximum elevation of 950 m amsl and Ramgarh Dhar with maximum elevation of 997m amsl. In the southwest border with Punjab, Siwalik hill ranges from hilly upland or plateau area with elevation up to 666 m above mean sea level. The vast area between the northwesterly & southeasterly hill ranges, on both sides of river Soan is the UNA valley. The undulating to plain fertile Una valley has an area of about 455 sq km and it extends from Daulatpur in the north west to Santokhgarh in the south east. The proposed area situated in the Swan River , which is undulating. The difference of the highest (972 m)at village Dangoh & the lowest (303 m) elevation of the area with total length of the river 97.1 km . The lease area is at an El 380 surrounded mostly by open barren river bed . 2.1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Shiwalik group mainly represents the rocks of the district. In addition to this at few places the newer alluvium of Quaternary age are also present. The Shiwalik deposits comprises of mudstones, sandstones and coarsely bedded conglomerates laid down when the region was a vast basin during middle Miocene, to upper Pleistocene times. The sediments were deposited by rivers flowing southwards from the Greater Himalayas, resulting in extensive multi-ordered drainage systems. Following this deposition, the sediments were uplifted through intense tectonic regimes (commencing in Upper Miocene times), subsequently resulting in a unique topographical entity- the Shiwalik hills. The Shiwaliks are divided stratigraphically into three major sub- groups- Lower, Middle, and Upper. These sub-groups are further divided into individual formations that are all laterally and vertically exposed today in varying linear and random patterns. Ongoing erosion and tectonic activity has greatly affected the topography of the Shiwaliks. Their present–day morphology is comprised of hogback ridges, consequent, subsequent, obsequent and resquent valleys of various orders, gullies, choes (seasonal streams), earth- pillars, rilled earth buttresses of conglomerate formation, semi-circular 7 choe-divides, talus cones, colluvial cones, water gaps, and choe terraces. Since the mining lease area is about 100 m from the chanellisation embankment ,mining will be possible in all the area but proper chanalization of the khadd has to be kept in mind so that water flow do not change its channel during the heavy rains ,thus the total mineable area is 12800 Sq m thus as a precaution for safety of raised embankments a single block of 12800 sq m is proposed for yearly mining. however no mining will be undertaken during rainy seasons.

 Mining will be carried out only up to a depth of 1 meters bgl whichever comes first, using hand tools like shovel, pan, sieve etc only during the day time.  No blasting will be resorted to.  The lease area having gentle slope with the gradient of 1:40, tracks for the movement of trucks and tractors can be made and maintained in any part of the lease area.  Excavation for the mining purposes will be made in such a way so that these are not deeper than one meter and follow the general / normal channel direction of the khad.  With the replenishment of the excavated area during the high floods the process of controlled mining can continue year after year. The erosion and weathering of Siwalik boulder beds in the catchments have inexhaustible supply of required minerals.  The mining activity will be undertaken during the dry seasons.  The construction of check dam wherever required has been suggested along the banks, would ensure protection of banks and adjoining land.  The complete area of one block is proposed for mining which will get replenished during rainy seasons The categories of river bed material in the proposed lease area and their end use are shown below:
