Last year, the Cougars compiled a 24-11 overall record, a 14-4 regular-season mark in Southern Conference play en route to an appearance in the conference championship game. They also earned a postseason berth to the College Basketball Invitational, defeated 2013 NIT champion and No. 21-ranked Baylor (63-59) on the road and recorded an impressive 11-2 mark away from TD Arena which tied for the second- most road wins in Division I in 2012-13. • The College of Charleston returns 10 letterwinners who accounted for 68 percent of the team’s scoring and 68 percent of the team’s rebounding in 2012-13. Three of the team’s projected starters played at least 29 minutes or more in each game a year ago. • CofC enters its inaugural season in the Colonial Athletic Assocation after officially joining the league on July 1, 2013. The Cougars are 35-13 (.729) all-time versus CAA (former and current) schools having faced Towson (2-1), Delaware (2-0), Drexel (2-0), George Mason (3-2), Georgia State (16-6), James Madison (1-0), UNC Wilmington (8-4) and Old Dominion (1- 0). • The Cougars were picked to finish third in the preseason CAA coaches poll behind Towson and Drexel. Two players received preseason billing including All-CAA Second Team selection Adjehi Baru (9.8 ppg and 8.3 rpg) and All-CAA Honorable Mention Anthony Stitt (11.0 ppg and 3.2 apg). • Like his father, NBA Hall of Famer, Rick Barry, College of Charleston redshirt freshman guard Canyon Barry shoots his free throws underhanded. • CofC welcomes four newcomers to the squad including point guard Preseason All-CAA Second Team Adjehi Baru Joe Chealey from Orlando, Terrance O’Donohue from Norcross, Ga., Johnathan Burroughs-Cook from Memphis and Glen Pierre, Jr., from Orlando.

  • Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds
Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds You cannot step twice into the same river. Heraclitus (circa 535 BC – 475 BC) While Heraclitus posited that “you cannot step twice into the same river,” the question is whether one tries a first time step into life’s river of challenges. For centuries the Red Cedar River has flowed from points east of Okemos, through Okemos and the campus of Michigan State University, and onward to points west. But, over the past half-century, only a select group of Okemos High Chieftain basketball players realized their dream of grabbing a rebound on the Chieftains home court and moving the basketball from the Chieftains O-ZONE to the Spartans IZZONE to become a Michigan State Spartan. Yet one Chieftain-cum-Spartan – Kristen Rasmussen – did step twice into the Red Cedar to return to the basketball court on which she once played Chieftain basketball and serve as head coach of the Okemos High girls’ basketball program. Over the past 60 seasons of Spartans basketball (‘60-61 to ’19-‘20), only 14 Chieftain basketball players traveled down the Red Cedar to change their uniforms from Maroon and White of the Chieftains to the Green and White of the Spartans, this happening when they stepped onto the court of Jenison Field House or the Breslin Center The “Time Line” graphics on the next two pages show the seasons in which Okemos High Chieftains were members of a Michigan State University Spartans basketball squad, with the second graphic showing the seasons (maroon) in which a Spartans basketball squad had no Chieftain.

  • Predicting Intrinsic Value of NCAA Division I Men's Basketball
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, 2015, 8, 74-91 74 © 2014 College Sport Research Institute Predicting Intrinsic Value of NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaching Salaries __________________________________________________________ Ryan M. Brewer, Ph.D. Indiana University - Purdue University Columbus Chad D. McEvoy, Ed.D. Syracuse University Nels Popp, Ph.D. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill _________________________________________________________ Men’s head basketball coaches at NCAA Division I programs commonly earn hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars each year, and are commonly paid three or four times as much as their university presidents, yet these wages are currently not rigorously analyzed prior to making hiring choices. Regression modeling reveals that basketball program revenue predicts the vast majority of compensation levels, apart from lifetime successes in NCAA tournaments, each coach’s ratings percentage index (RPI), and lifetime winning percentage. Athletics directors therefore need a tool whereby intrinsic value of their head coaches can be assessed. This study remedies an identified gap in the literature by extending estimates of intrinsic valuation to coaches’ contracts, increasing labor market efficiency. Predicted salaries of contemporary coaches are compared to actual salaries, noting differences. Predicting Men’s Basketball Coaching Salaries 75 A USA Today (Berkowitz, Upton, & Durkin, 2012) database showed the average head coach of a team participating in that year’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament was paid more than $1.4 million annually.
