Holy Cross Storylines • Holy Cross enters Saturday’s game at 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League. • The Crusaders defeated Boston University, 80-64, in its league opener on Wednesday. • Holy Cross trailed by five points at halftime but used a 10-0 run to open the second half to take control of the game. • Junior forward Malachi Alexander led the team with 17 points and was 7-of-8 from the field. • Freshman forward Karl Charles added 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. • Junior guard Robert Champion leads the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game and has made 22 3-pointers. • Alexander is second in the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game and averages 6.0 rebounds. In men's basketball, coaches will lose the built-in recruiting tool of playing near home during conference play and then at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. But what about the rest of the sports? Here's a look at the potential Missouri Pittsburgh Syracuse Nebraska Ohio State Northwestern Minnesota Michigan St. Wisconsin Purdue State Penn Michigan Iowa Indiana Illinois future of the non-revenue sports at Rutgers if it joins the Big Ten: BASEBALL Now: Under longtime head coach Fred Hill Sr., the Scarlet Knights made the Rutgers NCAA Tournament four times last decade. The Big East Conference’s national clout was hurt by the defection of Miami in 2004. The last conference team to make the College World Series was Louisville in 2007. After: Rutgers could emerge as the class of the conference. You find the best baseball either down South or out West. The power conferences are the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC. A Big Ten team has not made the CWS since Michigan in 1984. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Now: At the Big East championships in October, Rutgers finished 12th out of 14 teams. Syracuse won the Big East title and finished 14th at nationals. Four other Big East schools made the Top 25. After: The conferences are similar. Wisconsin won the conference title and took seventh at nationals. Two other schools made the Top 25. MEN’S GOLF Now: The Scarlet Knights have made the NCAA Tournament twice since 1983.

    A Tour of the US Service Academies Class 3: US Naval Academy Jim Dunphy [email protected] USNA History • Traditionally, naval officers served as midshipmen aboard naval vessels • These could be as young as 10 or as old as 40 History • West Point was founded in 1802, but no naval equivalent was considered for many years thereafter. • The catalyst for the USNA was the Somers affair Somers Affair • In 1842, Philip Spencer, the son of the Secretary of War, was serving aboard the USS Somers as a Midshipman • Finding out about a possible mutiny, he notified the purser Somers Affair • The rumor went up the chain to the ship’s Captain, Alexander McKenzie • He did not take any immediate action, but put both Spencer and the crew under surveillance • It was found that Spencer was having secret meetings with the crew and his diary had Greek symbols • This was probably because he was a member of a Greek fraternity at Union College before going to sea Somers Affair • Later, a mast failed and damaged some sails, a huge problem for a ship at sea • A number of thefts led to floggings • Captain McKenzie ordered his four officers and three senior midshipmen to investigate • They concluded that Spencer and two other crew members were planning to take over the ship • The same day the report was made, all three were hung and buried at sea Somers Affair • Spencer’s father, the Secretary of War, obviously had power over this issue • While a naval court martial exonerated Captain Mackenzie, the general public remained skeptical about the idea of midshipmen at sea
