  • Of Time, Honor, and Memory: Oral Law in Albania
Oral Tradition, 23/1 (2008): 3-14 Of Time, Honor, and Memory: Oral Law in Albania Fatos Tarifa This essay provides a historical account of the role of oral tradition in passing on from generation to generation an ancient code of customary law that has shaped and dominated the lives of northern Albanians until well into the mid-twentieth century. This traditional body of customary law is known as the Kode of Lekë Dukagjini. It represents a series of norms, mores, and injunctions that were passed down by word of mouth for generations and reputedly originally formulated by Lekë Dukagjini, an Albanian prince and companion-in-arms to Albania’s national hero, George Kastriot Skanderbeg (1405-68). Lekë Dukagjini ruled the territories of Pulati, Puka, Mirdita, Lura, and Luma in northern Albania—known today as the region of Dukagjini—until the Ottoman armies seized Albania’s northernmost city of Shkodër in 1479. Throughout the past five to six centuries this corpus of customary law has been referred to as Kanuni i Lekë Dukagjinit, Kanuni i Malsisë (the Code of the Highlands), or Kanuni i maleve (the Code of the Mountains). The “Code” is an inexact term, since Kanun, deriving from the Greek kanon, simultaneously signifies “norm,” “rule,” and “measure.” The Kanun, but most particularly the norm of vengeance, or blood taking, as its standard punitive apparatus, continue to this day to be a subject of historical, sociological, anthropological, and juridical interest involving various theoretical frames of reference from the dominant trends of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to today. The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini was not the only customary law in Albania.

At the Ambassadors Conference in London, Austro-Hungary argued that the involvement of Shkodra City was essential to the economy of the new Albanian state. Meanwhile Russia did not open the way for solving the Shkodra problem, Russian diplomats thought how to satisfy Serbia's ambitions in Northeast Albania, respectively in Kosovo Beyond those considerations of a political character, on 8 October 1912, was the youngest member of the Balkan Alliance, the Shkodra northern neighbor, Montenegro, that rushed to launch military actions, thus opening the first campaign of the First Balkan War. The Montenegrin military assault, as its main strategic objective in this war, was precisely the occupation and annexation of the historic city of Shkodra, a city with a big economic and cultural importance for the Albanian people and territory.

  • National Myths in Interdependence
National Myths in Interdependence: The Narratives of the Ancient Past among Macedonians and Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia after 1991 By Matvey Lomonosov Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts CEU eTD Collection Advisor: Professor Maria Kovács Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The scholarship on national mythology primarily focuses on the construction of historical narratives within separate “nations,” and oftentimes presents the particular national ist elites as single authors and undisputable controllers of mythological versions of the past. However, the authorship and authority of the dominant national ist elites in designing particular narratives of the communal history is limited. The national past, at least in non- totalitarian societies, is widely negotiated, and its interpretation is always heteroglot . The particular narratives that come out of the dominant elites’ “think-tanks” get into a polyphonic discursive milieu discussing the past. Thus they become addressed to alternative narratives, agree with them, deny them or reinterpret them. The existence of those “other” narratives as well as the others’ authorship constitutes a specific factor in shaping mythopoeic activities of dominant political and intellectual national elites. Then, achieving personal or “national” goals by nationalists usually means doing so at the expense or in relations to the others. If in this confrontation the rivals use historical myths, the evolution of the later will depend on mutual responses. Thus national historical myths are constructed in dialogue, contain voices of the others, and have “other” “authors” from within and from without the nation in addition to “own” dominant national ist elite.

It reflects events he lived through, his personal impressions, and gives conclusions, which provide lessons for all periods, drawn from the hostile activity carried out openly or behind the scenes, against our National Liberation Movement, our people's revolution and socialist Albania by the Anglo-American bourgeoisie. It brings out clearly the clash between the diabolical plans, attempts, manoeuvres and concrete activities of Anglo-American imperialism to put Albania under its sway, on the one hand, and the vigilance, the blow for blow struggle of the Communist Party of Albania and its General Secretary, the leader of the Army and the National Liberation Front and the whole patriotic Alba• nian people, Comrade Enver Hoxha, on the other hand, to discover, unmask, defeat and destroy the imperialist strategy and tactics in regard to Albania. These memoirs now being published, were written in 1975. The book is available in Albanian and several foreign languages. 3 I A LITTLE HISTORY Albania — a token for barter for the «Brit- ish Lion». Disraeli and Bismarck: «We are not interested in a few Albanian cottages.» Zog — the «open-door» policy.

DEPARTMENT OF BALKANIC, SLAVIC AND ORIENTAL STUDIES MASTER IN POLITICS AND ECONOMICS IN CONTEMPORARY EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE TITLE: Balkan Muslims and Modern Identities in Bosnia, Albania and Bulgaria SUPERVISOR: DR TSIMPIRIDOU FOTINI BY GKOUMA ZOI UNIVERSITY OF MACEDONIA, DECEMBER 2012 1 page CONTENTS 2 INTRODUCTION 3 ISLAM AS A RELIGION 7 The Sunni and the Shia-Sufi Islam in the Balkans 7 The Sunni and the Shia 7 Sufi Islam in the Balkans 9 BRIEF HISTORY OF ISLAM IN THE BALKANS 11 ISLAM IN BOSNIA – HERZEGOVINA 14 The BOSNIAK Muslims 14 ISLAM IN ALBANIA 23 The Albanian Muslims 23 The Bektashi Order 26 ISLAM IN BULGARIA 31 Pomaks of Bulgaria 32 CONCLUDING REMARKS 40 BIBLIOGRAPHY-REFERENCIES 45 2 INTRODUCTION In the public discourse on Islam, there is this introduction of terms marking the name of this universal religion with adjectives that refer to it, according to its geographical and cultural location, like ‘European Islam’, or ‘Turkish Islam’ etc. and that seems to be the result of the terminology transfer from Western religious studies, where there is a separation between ‘official’ or ‘normative’ religion on the one hand, and ‘folk religion’ offering interpretation and practice of a religion according to the specific forms of it, at a certain place or in a specific group on the other (Karcic 2006:1) ‘Folk religion’ is usually studied by anthropologists based on ethnographic data etc. In the case of Islam, anthropologists are interested in the process of socialization and symbolization in which Islam is performed in a certain local environment, so that understanding of this religion and the social-civil reality comes out of it (Karcic 2006:1) The identity of the Balkans and people living within, is dominated by its geographical position because as an area it is found at the crossroads of various cultures.
