Head Coach: Tim Shea Assistant Coaches: Nate Cole, Nick Restaino 2014 SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2014 Southern Connecticut State University baseball squad will look to continue its winning tradition as it sets out to accomplish its goals of a Northeast-10 Conference championship, a NCAA Tournament bid and a trip to the College World Series in Cary, N.C. The Owls will look to improve upon on last year’s 20-21-1 overall record. This year’s squad will need to fill the shoes of five graduating seniors: All-Conference centerfielder Michael Cleary, infielder A.J. Rouleau, outfielder Colin Dickinson and pitchers Ryan Yerina and Steve Landell. Rouleau led the team with a .318 average while Cleary did not make an error in centerfield and was a Rawlings’ Glove Glove Award winner. On the mound, Yerina and Landell combined to give SCSU over 105 innings and 17 starts. SCSU returns nine of its starters and brings in five newcomers. The pitching staff will figure to be the strength of the 2014 squad and will be relied upon heavily for the Owls to reach their goals. Senior Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) looks to be the anchor of the Owls’ rotation, having led the team in innings pitched the past two seasons. The righty went 6-3 with a 2.60 ERA last year and was named All-Northeast-10 Conference in 2013. Cundari, who ranked third in the NE-10 in strikeouts, fanned 79 batters in 83 innings last season. Making the transition from the bullpen to the rotation will be left- hander Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.). Last season the junior went 4-2 to go along with five saves. The southpaw had a 2.73 ERA and struck out over a batter an inning. In 2012, Egan led the Northeast-10 Conference in appearances and was also a member of the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team. Junior Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) will slot in as another Owls’starter. The righty went 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA last year. The 2012 Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team member led the staff in wins with six as a freshman. The Owls will have multiple options to compete for a starting spot and fill important innings out of the pen. Sophomore Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Owls staff with a 2.12 ERA. A 2013 Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection, the righty played his summer baseball with the Wachusett Dirt Dogs of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Yerina only conceded seven earned runs on the mound for SCSU last season. Seniors Tyler Albrecht (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) and Will Meade (Orange, Conn.) will provided leadership out of the bullpen this spring. Albrecht is a right hander who will be one of the Owls’ co-captains, while Meade had a 2.93 ERA and a save in 2013. Making his return to the mound in 2014 will be A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.). The junior, who had a medical redshirt last year, was All-Conference and had nine saves in 2012. Freshman Jordan Hamler (Watertown, Conn.) will be a new pitcher to watch in 2014, while Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.), Gary Flowers (East Haven, Conn.) and freshman transfer Greg Zullo will all compete for innings. Zullo is a two way player and will add depth to the infield as well. Positionally, the Owls return eight starters from the 2013 squad and have added a number of talented newcomers. Leading the team behind the plate will be senior catcher T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.). The Owls’ backstop was second on the team with a .293 batting average last year. Replacing Rouleau at first will be newcomer Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.). The junior was an All-Conference selection atDean College last season. Manning the middle infield for the Owls will be sophomore second baseman Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) and freshman Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.). SCSU’s new shortstop was the 2013 New Hampshire Player of the Year. Returning to the hot corner is T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.). The Owls’ co-captain was second on the team with 22 RBI in 2013. Competing for time in the infield will be sophomore Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) and Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.). Replacing Cleary and patrolling center field will be Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.). The sophomore, who was named tothe2013 Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team, went 10-for-12 in stolen base attempts in 2013. Newcomer Kyle Holland (Norwich, Conn.) is projected to start in right field this spring. The transfer from Dakota State can also catch. Holland received first team Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.)/Frontier Baseball All-Conference honors in 2013. Sophomore Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) will also see action behind the dish and in the field. Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.), Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.), Will Hindinger (Hamden, Conn.) and Joe Uccello (Glastonbury, Conn.) will all compete for time in the outfield, while the versatile Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) gets first crack at designated hitter and should see time in left field. Community engagement is an important component of the experience as a Division II student-athlete. The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team continues to be active in the local community with various ventures.

All intercollegiate programs at SCSU participate in the Tim Greer Insurance Agency, Inc. Community Service Cup, which provides a competitive format that allows student-athletes to gain an enriched experience through engagement with the on-campus and local communities by supporting ventures of traditional citizens, campus community members and peer students and student-athletes. SCSU student- athletes volunteered more than 3,000 hours of their time to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2012-13 academic year.

Among the events that the team and coaching staff participated in during the past calendar year:

• Worked with students at the Beecher School in New Haven. • Participated in academic sessions with students at Clinton Avenue School. • Helped students with their academic work at the Helen Street School in Hamden.

The AstroPlay artificially-surfaced playing field is surrounded by an eight-lane, state-of-the-art 400-meter track surface, both of which were replaced in 2000. Directly adjacent to Southern’s Moore Field House, Dow Field is lighted and has seating for some 6,000. The facility was completely resurfaced in the summer, 2011. James W. Moore Field House is Southern’s primary indoor athletic complex. The main arena, with a permanent seating capacity of 2,800, has a six-lane, artificially-surfaced track (200 meters), which was completely renovated in the summer of 1997. The fieldhouse is utilized for all major indoor events and can accommodate multiple practice sessions simultaneously. Drop curtains and netting allow the main arena to accommodate a complete baseball or softball infield for practice as well as the traditional indoor programs. Moore Field House also has complete weight-training facilities, locker rooms and equipment rooms. Located in Moore Fieldhouse, Hutchinson Natatorium has an eight-lane swimming pool with both one- and three-meter diving boards and a Colorado timing system. The recently renovated Pelz Gymnasium is the oldest of the Southern athletic facilities and is utilized primarily for physical education classes, recreation & intramurals, women’s gymnastics, and volleyball. The facility has a six-lane pool and an independent, auxiliary gymnasium for gymnastics. The Owls also recently refurbished their softball facility behind Pelz Gym and opened a new baseball complex in the fall of 2001. All of the Southern facilities have played host to collegiate and scholastic championship events.
