Preservation Orders June 2019 National Monuments Service Seirbhís na Séadcomharthaí Náisiúnta www.archaeology.ie Disclaimer This listing is based on paper and digital records held by the National Monuments Service, the National Archives and the Oireachtas Library. Research to clarify the number and extent of some of the monuments that are protected by a Preservation Order is ongoing. Consequently, the information presented here should be considered as a work in progress and changes will be implemented from time to time. While every effort has been made in preparing this data, any omissions or errors on the list should not be taken to mean a Preservation Order is not in force. If you require clarification on a record included in the listing or have a query relating to Preservation Orders please e- mail [email protected] Information about the list of Preservation Orders The following list of Preservation Orders details all monuments/wrecks that have a Preservation Order (PO) placed on them. Currently there are 548 such records. Format of the list The list is presented alphabetically by county and is made up of a number of columns detailing the PO number, the PO date, the PO description, the PO location and the relevant SMR number/Wreck number. PO Number: Each Preservation Order is given a number, this number relates to the year the Order was placed in for example 01/1931 means it was the first order placed in 1931. PO Date: This refers to the exact date the Preservation Order came into effect. PO Description: This identifies the type of monument(s) covered by the Preservation Order. It is described as it is on the official order therefore the terminology used does not follow the classification system used by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. Townland: The townland names used are in accordance with those used by the Ordnance Survey. If a monument extends over more than one townland, all townlands are listed. County: The County in which the monument is situated. SMR/Wreck Number : The Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) number provides the link to the records of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland. This SMR number can be used to access further information on the monument(s) on the Historic Environment Viewer available here: http://webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/ Five PO records relate to Wrecks. In such cases the relevant Wreck number(s) is provided and further information on these can be found on the Wreck Viewer available here: https://www.archaeology.ie/underwater-archaeology/wreck-viewer Preservation Orders June 2019 SMR/Wreck PO Number PO date PO Description Townland County Number Ardristan Pillar 65/1938 20/06/1938 ARDRISTAN Carlow CW013-013---- Stone 7/1976 02/03/1976 Portal Dolmen BALLYNASILLOGE Carlow CW022-010001- 6/1978 25/10/1978 Castlegrace Motte CASTLEGRACE Carlow CW013-054---- 3/1995 21/12/1995 Clogrenan Castle CLOGRENAN Carlow CW007-033---- St. Foctchern's 73/1939 16/01/1939 Church or the White KILLOUGHTERNANE Carlow CW019-048001- Chapel 3/1984 10/04/1984 Ogham Stone PATRICKSWELL Carlow CW004-011---- 178/1946 09/07/1946 Horned Cairn AGHAGASHLAN Cavan CV018-001---- Two conjoined 3/1956 22/02/1956 ARDLOW Cavan CV039-006---- barrows 2/1987 30/01/1987 Wedge Tomb AUGHRIM Cavan CV010-005---- CV026-004001-; CV026-004003-; 8/1972 27/04/1972 Three Ritual Sites BANAGHER Cavan CV026-004004-; CV026-004006- 179/1946 09/07/1946 Horned Cairn COHAW Cavan CV018-005---- CORRAWEELIS (Upper 5/2001 12/11/2001 Cairn Cavan CV034-058---- Loughtee By.) 4/1982 26/11/1982 Crannog DILLAGH Cavan CV031-017---- Abbey (in ruins) and DRUMLANE (Lower CV014-028001-; 5/1971 18/03/1971 Cavan Earthworks Loughtee By.)
