Jaramillo confi- dently kept Well Defined close, however, as he tipped out the 6- 5 favorite to sit just off the hip of the frontrunner who cruised through a mild first quarter-mile in :22.75. Travy Boy maintained a length advantage around the turn with Well Defined edging closer as they passed the three- eighths pole after a :45.03 half- mile and two-and-half lengths Kathleen O’Connell/LAUREN KING PHOTO faster than Pro Quality and Untitled together in third. Well Defined took a short lead turning for home but was unable to shake free from the resilient Travy Boy, who continued his fight on the rail. Well Defined finally put away that rival as they raced past the eighth-pole when the multiple stakes-winner Shivaree sud- denly appeared on the far outside after making a late run from five lengths off the pace out of the turn. Jaramillo gave Well Defined a strong ride in the final furlong while keeping his crop in hand and they were able to hold off Shiv- aree in second while finishing in 1:23.47 on the track labeled good. Silverly Enough, With Verve and Untitled completed the order of finish. Garter and Tie was scratched. Well Defined paid $4.40 on a $2 win ticket. “I think he’s better loose on the lead, but I think Jaramillo [Emisael] made a great decision sitting off a horse that was sharp coming off a layoff,” O’Connell said. Well Defined won for the sixth time in nine starts for O’Con- nell, who purchased him off of a layoff late in 2020 from Gil and Marilyn Campbell’s Stonehedge LLC, who also bred the dark bay or brown winner of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs and $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality at Gulfstream earlier in his career. “[Well Defined] needed some time off and Mr. Campbell has a lot of horses. I was willing to give him some time off,” O’Connell said of the private sale after Well Defined finished fourth in a $16,000 optional claiming starter allowance won by Painter at Monmouth Park in September. “It’s a gamble. Sometimes, they come back and sometimes they don’t. I have ones come back that have never been half of what they were. I’m just glad he made a whole recovery and Mr. Campbell still reaps the benefits because he’s the breeder. It’s a win, win, win.” In his first two starts under O’Connell’s yellow and black silks, Well Defined won a $25,000 claiming race at Gulfstream Park West on Nov. 18 then a $35,000 claiming on Jan. 3 at Gulfstream before finishing fifth behind winner Quenane in a $30,000 starter allowance on Jan. 28, also at Gulfstream.
