By Emma Berry , UKCOn a day without the millionaire highlights that we have become accustomed to at the Goffs Orby Sale, trade struggled to keep pace with recent strong renewals of this auctionCa factor which had been widely expected in advance and has been seen throughout the 2020 yearling market. Despite the industry being fuelled largely by dreams, only the foolhardy could dream that this year=s trade would be unaffected by a global pandemic which is not only restricting international travel but also plunging plenty of businesses into precarious situations. To a certain extent, the upper tier of the yearling market remains immune to such outside forces but there was a more workmanlike feel to the first session which Derby winner Serpentine | Scoop Dyga progressed at a rate significantly below recent levels. MIDNIGHT BISOU RETIRED STILL PLUGGING AWAY, LEATHERBURY WINS RACE FOR 62ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR by Bill Finley Now 87, trainer King Leatherbury likes to tell a joke, the one about his and his family's burial plot. "I feel perfectly good and healthy but when I visit my family plot down there, where my whole family has been buried, there's this little sign. It says, >King Leatherbury, coming soon.'" In the meantime, Leatherbury is not done yet or ready to walk away from a career that has earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame and fifth place on the list of all-time winningest trainers with 6,504 victories. He reached another milestone Friday night at Penn National when wining a $10,000 claimer with Paratycachaca (Jazil). In a streak that began way back in 1959 at Sunshine Park (now Tampa Bay Downs), he has now won a race for 62 straight years. It was his first win in over 10 months. Midnight Bisou in the 2019 Personal Ensign | Sarah Andrew Cont. p5 Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute--Diva Delite, by Repent), the reigning Eclipse Award-winning older female and five-time IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Grade I winner, has been retired from racing, according to Jeffrey Bloom, co-owner and managing partner or Bloom Racing FLORIDA-BOUND COLT LEADS ORBY Stable. Turned over to Bill Spawr in California, Midnight Bisou was sent off at debut odds of 21-1 for Bloom and Allen Racing LLC and was beaten a nose by future Grade I winner Dream Tree (Uncle Mo), to whom she was also beaten a nose in the Desi Arnaz S. in her next start.

Midnight Bisou Retired cont. Midnight Bisou became the queen of the hill in Southern California in 2018, winning the GII Santa Ynez S., the GIII Santa Ysabel S. and the GI Santa Anita Oaks (video) in convincing fashion before heading to for her next appearance.

The Monomoy Girl Meetings... On the strength of that form, Midnight Bisou was made the 23-10 favorite for the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks, but she endured a nightmarish trip from a wide draw and did well to be third, beaten just over four lengths by Monomoy Girl (Tapizar). With better and richer options for his filly in the eastern half of the U.S., Bloom elected to transfer Midnight Bisou to trainer Steve Asmussen, who saddled the filly to a towering six-length success in the GII Mother Goose S., with Madaket Stables now part of the ownership group. Clearly second to Monomoy Girl in the GI CCA Oaks, the dark bay was third in the 10-furlong GI Alabama S., then crossed the line a neck second to Monomoy Girl in the GI Cotillion S. (video) before being elevated to the victory. She closed the season with a rallying third to her arch- rival in the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff.

The Making of a Champion... While Monomoy Girl spent the entirety of 2019 on the shelf, Midnight Bisou dominated the division, with seven wins from eight starts. Ultra-game in taking the GI Apple Blossom H. by a nose in April, she was imperious in adding the GI Ogden Phipps S. and GIII Molly Pitcher S. before throwing down with Elate (Medaglia d=Oro) in one of the year=s most thrilling stretch battles in the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga (video). A nose best that day, she romped in the GII Beldame S. before suffering her first defeat of the season in the Distaff. She was nevertheless the runaway winner of the Eclipse, besting her Distaff conqueror Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize) by a wide margin.

Training On at Five... The morning of the Distaff, Bloom announced that Midnight Bisou would be withdrawn from the Fasig-Tipton November sale and would instead focus on a 5-year-old campaign. Connections selected the inaugural $20-million Saudi Cup for their mare=s seasonal debut, and despite racing far back early, she made eye- catching progress up the rail in the final furlong to finish a close second to Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) (video). In the meantime, Monomoy Girl had made a successful return to action and a much-anticipated rematch loomed in the GII Fleur de Lis S. June 27. But the Brad Cox runner was re-routed for the GII Ruffian S. at Belmont two weeks later and Midnight Bisou took full advantage, rolling home by 8 1/4 lengths. Beaten a neck into second by Vexatious (Giant=s Causeway) in this year=s Personal Ensign Aug. 1, Midnight Bisou was being pointed for this weekend=s GI Juddmonte Spinster S., but she was off following a work at Saratoga this past Monday and was sent to Rood and Riddle in Lexington to be examined by Dr. Larry Bramlage. The renowned vet confirmed Wednesday that Midnight Bisou had sustained a sesamoid fracture in her right front fetlock. Surgery is not indicated and the injury will not impact her future as a broodmare. Midnight Bisou will be consigned by Elite Sales to this year=s Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Nov. 8.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 11 OF 13 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 1, 2020 and I=ve been at home, and I haven=t left home, so how that happened, I don=t know, but I guess it happens.@ Ortiz is currently the leading jockey in the country with $14,743,742 in earnings. He has won the Eclipse Award as the nation=s top jockey the past two years. NYRA=s Director of Communications, Patrick McKenna, said that because Ortiz had tested positive in Saratoga, the protocols that he would be required to follow would be determined by the Saratoga County Department of Health. Those protocols, said McKenna, require Ortiz to Aself-isolate for a period of time no shorter than 10 days. Following the completion of the period of isolation, and provided that Ortiz Jr. remains asymptomatic, then he will be evaluated for a potential return to the NYRA jockey colony. The Saratoga County Department of Health retains jurisdiction to address public health matters in the county and, in this case, the discontinuation of quarantine/isolation for individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are pursuing a return to the workplace.@

MEADOWLANDS TEMPORARILY CLOSES DUE TO COVID-19 The Meadowlands Racetrack, a top harness racing venue in New Jersey, temporarily shut down starting Tuesday evening after several employees tested positive for COVID-19. Live racing will take place as scheduled Friday, but without fans. The facility will reopen to fans Saturday at 10 a.m. The following is part of a statement the track release Tuesday evening: AThe racetrack continues to take an aggressive stance against the spread of COVID-19. Over the past several days the medical team has identified a few individuals that tested positive for COVID-19 that they acquired either in the workplace or at home. Contact tracing is ongoing. Out of an abundance of caution the entire facility will be shut down for top-to-bottom sanitization. The Meadowlands Racetrack is committed to providing a safe and healthy grandstand for all employees, patrons and fans.@

WANAMAKER=S OCTOBER CATALOGUE LIVE Wanamaker=s, the online auction house, will offer its fourth auction Thursday, Oct. 8, with the catalogue now live. The catalogue features weanlings, yearlings, racing prospects, and broodmares. In addition to being able to view pictures and videos, prospective buyers may schedule in-person inspections with sellers. Buyers must register to bid. AAs we enter into our fourth-ever auction, we appreciate the continued support from sellers and buyers,@ said Wanamaker=s co-founder Jack Carlino. AWe were so excited to see Fiya=s performance last weekend for new owner Rob Masiello and we are confident we have some more serious talent in this catalogue as well.@ Fiya (Friesan Fire) topped the second online Wanamaker=s auction at $400,000 in late July and made his first start for his new connections in a Sept. 20 allowance at Belmont, getting a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. Among the entrants in October=s catalogue is Caravel (Mizzen Mast), winner of the Aug. 24 Lady Erie S. at Presque Isle Downs. She is entered in Saturday=s $100,000 Hilltop S. at Pimlico. PLEDGE New Vocations, the largest racehorse adoption charity in the country, has kicked off its 11th annual Breeders= Cup Pledge in support of Thoroughbred aftercare. The program, which has raised over $650,000 for aftercare, is seeking owners and trainers of Breeders= Cup contenders to pledge a percentage of their Breeders= Cup earnings to New Vocations for the rehabilitating, retraining, and rehoming of retired racehorses. AThe need for our services continues to grow each year,@ said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. AThis year, in particular, has been very challenging due to the obstacles presented by COVID-19. Over the last decade, we have grown this Pledge into an extremely important fundraiser and we had our most successful year yet in 2019, raising over $130,000. We hope to have another record-breaking year in 2020 and are so grateful for the contributions of our donors who have continued to support and value our program. The Pledge is a great way for owners and trainers to give back and support New Vocations= aftercare efforts.@ Caravel | Coady Cont. p13 TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 13 OF 13 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 1, 2020

In 2019, over 50 Breeders= Cup contenders had connections who pledged a percentage of their Championship Day earnings. Six were winners of their respective races: Vino Rosso (Curlin), British Idiom (Flashback), Sharing (Speightstown), Covfefe (Into Mischief), Uni (GB) (More Than Ready), and Bricks and Mortar (Giant=s Causeway).
