The Weissach-Dossier Michael Mauer’S Style Is Making Its Mark on the Contours of Twenty-First-Century Porsches
newsroom Scene and Passion Mar 28, 2016 The Weissach-Dossier Michael Mauer’s style is making its mark on the contours of twenty-first-century Porsches. Switzerland is the wellspring of his creativity. A conversation with the Head of the Style Porsche, surrounded by mountain peaks. This is a wondrous place. The sky is a deep blue, the sun skips across the reflection of the lake. Surrounded by the fjord-like craggy cliffs rising more than 1,000 meters skyward, this Swiss mountain lake imparts the essence of serenity. The area is familiar to winter-sports enthusiasts as a bottleneck en route from Zurich to Davos, Arosa, or the Engadine. Only a few travelers have discovered the treasures to be found in the shadow of the autobahn that winds its way along the azure lake on narrow avalanche protectors and through the tunnel: tranquil spots with small coves and even sandy beaches. More sensitive souls might consider the steep mountain massif to be rather oppressive. But this is where Michael Mauer, a passionate sportsman, has found his oasis of tranquility. “One designer may get his inspiration from art, another may go on city breaks and fly to London every Friday after work,” he explains over coffee on the top floor of his home in a former factory, complete with a view of the lake and the mountains. “I see how we’re constantly being bombarded with information, which is why we have to give our minds more and more time to process all of this information. Whenever I’m here on the weekend and go skiing, ride my bike, hike, or simply sit on the deck for a couple of hours without thinking about anything particularly lofty, my subconscious uses this time to sort out information from the week just gone by, to process it, and to find solutions.” Mauer views his profession as a dream come true As Porsche’s chief designer, Michael Mauer is in no danger of running out of complex design issues demanding solutions. -
Press Release May 2, 2012 No
Press release May 2, 2012 No. 57/12 Former Porsche chief designer dies aged 81 Anatole Lapine is dead Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is mourning it’s chief designer of many years, Anatole Carl Lapine, who died on 29 April 2012 in Baden-Baden. Lapine headed up the Style Porsche design studio from 1969 to 1988. Michael Mauer, Porsche’s chief designer since 2004, paid homage to the deceased: “Anatole Lapine shaped Porsche sports car design over more than two decades. As a designer he didn’t follow fashion but was forever setting new trends with his concepts.” Anatole Lapine was born on 23 May 1930 in Riga, Latvia. After the war, Lapine served an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic with Daimler-Benz in Hamburg before attending the Hamburg Wagenbauschule. In 1951 he went to the USA where a year later he began work at General Motors in the advanced body engineering department. In 1965 Lapine returned to Germany and was put in charge of the Opel Research Center. On 15 April 1969 Lapine moved to Porsche as head of the styling department. In addition to the design of the Porsche 911 so-called “G Series” numerous new Porsche models such as the 924, 928 and 944 saw the light of day under Lapine’s direction. But Anatole Lapine and his style team also delivered a number of Porsche Engineering third-party client development design projects. Maximisation of minimalism. Devotion to design. Elegance. One: rebel, cult figure, eternally young, alone. The other: magician, legend steeped in contradiction, never without her. Conjunction of opposites, united in passion. The number 130 on the bonnet of James Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder: symbol of a movement that transcends death. In Salzburg people could tell when Herbert von Karajan was there by the car parked at the offices of its famous festival hall: “God drives a Porsche.” Furrows and flat surfaces, curves and corners, aggression and graciousness, strength and elegance, speed and solidity, focussed concentration and casual playfulness: seemingly disparate forces in precisely calibrated balance. Breaking free of the confluence of automated currents, setting one’s own course, experiencing the pleasure of authenticity beyond efficiency. Refuge for individualists, nonconformists, the avant-garde. Exclusive, yet right in the middle of it all. Targa Florio, Le Mans: dream-like places, built out of triumph and tragedy. One: a victorious hero. The other: still a hero in defeat. -
A U.S. Consumer's Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging
CONSUMER GUIDE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES JUNE 2021 11570437 WHY BUY AN ELECTRIC CAR? Electric vehicles (EVs) are fun to drive, safe, comfortable, and convenient to refuel. They also cost less to operate per mile and produce no tailpipe emissions. Today’s electric cars do everything a gas car can do—and more. Most are high-performing vehicles with silent, instant torque, superb handling, and the latest technology and safety features. Most can travel 200–250 miles on a charge; many can go farther. Most EV drivers prefer to charge at home for its convenience and savings. A growing national network of public charging sites enables more consumers—even those who can’t plug in at home—to consider purchasing an EV. Because EVs are powered by electricity instead of gasoline, they shift our energy reliance to domestic sources while also reducing emissions. Cutting vehicle emissions is especially critical in communities adjacent to heavily trafficked roadways. As local power generation grows cleaner, every electric car charged on that grid gets cleaner too—and the broader public health and climate benefits increase. Electrifying light-duty transport would reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 17% relative to 2018 levels. EV 101 This guide highlights the two types of electric vehicles that plug into the grid to recharge their batteries. They are battery-electric (or all-electric) vehicles and plug-in hybrids. All-electric vehicles are powered solely Plug-in hybrids pair an electric motor by an electric motor and battery. They and battery with an internal-combustion burn no gasoline or diesel fuel, so they engine. -

There are 120 designers who work in the Porsche Design Studio, the epicentre where Porsche’s models of the future are dreamed up and created, and it is a closely guarded area where access is restricted. Porsche Unseen by Jan Karl Baedeker & Stefan Bogner, published by Delius Klasing Verlag – © Virtual Motorpix/Glen Smale Here Porsche has done the opposite of what many other major manufacturers around the world have done, and that is to locate design offices in different locations in order to tap into the expertise where their markets are. Instead, Porsche has deliberately elected to www.porscheroadandrace.com bring those designers to Porsche’s home town, and that is because the company’s history and heritage resides in Stuttgart and Weissach. It is here that those designers would be best able to examine in detail those models which have made Porsche what it is today. Porsche Unseen by Jan Karl Baedeker & Stefan Bogner, published by Delius Klasing Verlag – © Virtual Motorpix/Glen Smale It goes without saying that the general public will never get a look in at what design goodies Porsche has stashed away in this department. And so, with this in mind, the book Porsche Unseen has been released by Delius Klasing Verlag giving Porsche enthusiasts a rare look into this world. -
