Publicado por: Joaquín Borges-Triana No lo puedo negar, soy alguien aferrado al sonido musical con el que me formé durante mi adolescencia y primera juventud, allá por la década de los años 70. De ahí mi proverbial admiración por el jazz rock al estilo impuesto por Miles Davis con su disco Bitches Brew y continuado luego por agrupaciones como Return to Forever. Por ello, cuando encuentro materiales nuevos que de algún modo son continuadores de dicha línea, salto de alegría al escucharlos. Justo eso me sucedió al pinchar el más reciente fonograma de OHMphrey, el CD Posthaste, segundo material acreditado a esta formación y editado por el sello Magna Carta. Estamos ante un grupo proyecto, armado por integrantes de otros dos ensembles. De tal modo, aquí se unen un par de miembros de la agrupación de jazz rock Ohm, el guitarrista Chris Poland y el bajista Robertino Pagliari, a los que se suman Jake Cinninger en la guitarra, Kris Myers en la batería y Joel Cummins en los teclados, componentes de Umphrey’s McGee, cultores del rock progresivo. No es la primera vez que Magna Carta apuesta por trabajos que encajan dentro de la categoría de proyectos. Habría que evocar lo hecho con anterioridad a propósito de nombres como Explorer’s Club, Liquid Tension Experiment y Bozzio Levin Stevens, todos de muy gratos recuerdos para los que somos seguidores asiduos de esta manera de concebir la creación musical. En el caso de OHMphrey, ellos encajan a la perfección dentro de lo que se ha dado en llamar Jam Band, es decir, un tipo de grupo en el que la improvisación desempeña rol fundamental. Esto es comprobable al audicionar su disco Posthaste, contentivo de siete piezas registradas en estudio y dos bonus tracks en vivo, tomados de la grabación de un concierto de la agrupación en Winston, San Diego, en 2009. El álbum se inicia con el corte Devil’s in the details, la pieza de estirpe más heavy de todo el material. El riff guitarrero que introduce el tema le trae a uno ciertos ecos del thrash ochentón. Intuyo que en ello mucho tiene que ver Chris Poland, quien fuese integrante de Megadeth. El desarrollo ulterior de Devil’s in the details le ubica ciento por ciento en la atmósfera del jazz rock, eso sí, con un toque algo experimental durante varios compases intermedios. Viene a continuación uno de mis momentos favoritos en el CD, The sun also rises, donde hay espacio para el lucimiento individual de los cinco integrantes del proyecto. En el caliente intercambio de solos que aquí se genera y en el que todos evidencian la condición de virtuosos en sus respectivos instrumentos, quiero resaltar lo hecho por el teclista Joel Cummins, el baterista Kris Myers y en especial, el bajista Robertino Pagliari, quien ejecuta su solo con el bajo procesado a través de un multiefecto. Tom Bombadil, tercer track del fonograma y cuyo nombre se toma de un personaje de Tolkien, representa el instante de mayor alegría en el modo de interpretar el material compilado por la banda. Hay aquí una energía contagiosa y diría que hasta a veces juguetona por parte del quinteto y en particular, por Joel Cummins al diseñar los timbres del teclado. Por su parte, The river runs viene a ser el momento de paz y sosiego a lo largo de la grabación. Pero cuidado, lo anterior no significa que el nivel de improvisación por los músicos decaiga ni tan siquiera un ápice, pues esta vuelve a ser una obra para el lucimiento colectivo y donde se aprecia que cada uno de los miembros del quinteto aportó lo suyo en la composición. The shoemaker’s back es otra pieza fascinante, inmersa totalmente en la línea del jazz rock y también dueña de riffs guitarreros de tremenda fuerza. Mientras tanto, Ramona’s car wash le permite a Kris Myers hacer una disertación respecto a cómo acelerar o ralentizar el aire del tiempo al hacer un solo de batería y Reggaelic tiene como objetivo transmitirnos sensaciones por medio de apelar a distintas texturas sonoras. Finalmente, el par de bonus tracks, Firestarter y 2020, son muestras de lo que es una Jam Band de talla extra, entregada a una sesión improvisatoria en la que cada músico dialoga a través de su instrumento con sus colegas de agrupación. It was only a matter of when, not if, some of those innovative concoctions would find their way into a studio.
