Warning From the Mosquito and Vector Control District Possible Lyme Disease Case in Waterdog Lake The Mosquito and Vector Control District reported to the City that it appears a Belmont resident contracted Lyme disease from a tick at Waterdog open space. City staff is coordinating with the District and signs are posted at the trailheads warning users about ticks along with tick identification cards. It appears that to 2 to 3% of the ticks throughout the area carry Lyme disease, although testing earlier this week by the District indicated that rates are higher for certain trails in the Waterdog Lake Open Space. The District is putting out a press release and beginning next week will be starting small-scale spraying along the trails where they found a high numbers of ticks. The City has been informing people and assisting the District with its control efforts. Ultimately, City staff will be posting permanent warning signs at the trailheads similar to the one on the left. The project is a tribute to the community that has been created through 25 years of programs and activities in the Twin Pines Senior & Community Center. Join Us for a Grand Re-Opening! City Manager’s Weekly Update January 24, 2014 Fire Crews Help Reduce Fire Danger and Improve Trails This week, the Parks and Recreation Department continued working with CALFIRE to use Fire Safe Crews to clear vegetation and improve the fire breaks on trails in the Water dog Lake Open Space Area and the San Juan Canyon Open Space Parklands. The John Brooks and Canyon Creeks Trails were cleared this week to reduce the danger of a wildfire starting in the open space from impacting nearby houses. Later in the week, the crews moved to the San Juan Canyon to clear invasive Acacia Trees from the land. The work also benefits recreational use to have wider trails for walking and mountain biking and greater visibility. The Fire Safe Crews come at a very low cost from the Ben Lomond work camp. Next week, the crews will continue their work in the San Juan Canyon. This work will help upgrade the safety, performance, and operating efficiency of the Peninsula’s commuter rail system. The Communications Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS) Positive Train Control (PTC) Project is an advanced signal system that will equip the corridor with federally-mandated safety technology and will increase system capacity to help accommodate future ridership demand. The Project will monitor and, if necessary, control train movement in the event of human error. This will increase safety by: • Eliminating the risk of train-to-train collisions. • Reducing risk of potential derailments by enforcing speed limits. • Providing additional safety for railroad workers on the tracks. • Improving grade crossing performance to reduce gate downtime and improve local traffic circulation. The CBOSS PTC Project is also a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program, which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor by 2019. An electrified Caltrain will be cleaner, quieter, and will upgrade the system to provide faster and/or more frequent service to more stations and more riders. To implement the project, Caltrain will be identifying utility cables, digging a small trench and boring close to the tracks within the Caltrain right-of-way, to install a fiber optic cable. In order to maintain daytime train service, Caltrain is scheduled to perform this work at night (8pm to 6am) Jan. 26 -30; Feb. 2-6; and Feb. 9-13. Neighbors may experience some minor installation noise during this time and lights will be used in the area to help provide visibility. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Crews will also install water feature components at Posy Park. The $155 million project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. A new elevated Caltrain station between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues will replace the station at Sylvan Avenue. Work on this project will not disrupt Caltrain service.
