To Mark the 150Th Anniversary of the Birth of Matisse and the Upcoming
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Matisse and the upcoming exhibition of his work at the Pompidou Centre in Paris in 2020, this art documentary invites us to retrace the voyages Matisse made that influenced his art, especially his last trip to Polynesia in 1930, which took him to the threshold of contemporary art with the invention of his gouache-painted cut-outs. In 1930, at the age of 60, Matisse feels the call of the sea, the lure of elsewhere, one last time. He decides to embark on the longest possible journey: to the antipodes, to see Polynesia. The voyage to Tahiti takes several weeks, giving him time to look back on the distance he has travelled in his lifetime. He reflects on the many journeys that he, a man of the North searching for bright light and colours, has continually made throughout his life and career as a painter: to Corsica, Collioure and Nice, where he finally settled in 1917, but also to Algeria, Morocco and the United States. Each time, these trips have been a stepping stone to something else. His Corsican experience led him to Fauvism, his sojourn in Morocco to modern painting; Polynesia will permeate the last 25 years of his creative life and take him to the threshold of contemporary art. This lifelong artistic quest for other lights, colours and shapes has also, above all, been a search for himself that has driven him tirelessly and passionately to pursue the great journey of his life. Cultural Theory 2015 magazine MA Modern and Contemporary Art 1(4) Critical Reviews Exhibitions Cultural Studies Interviews Foreword This fourth number of C# — the Christie’s Education student-led on-line journal — reflects the unique interests, engagements and ambitions of those who have made the issue. As lecturers, tutors and teachers, our aim is to set in motion the conditions necessary for students to begin to gather together critical writing, features, essays and interviews, which map and explore the ecosystem that makes for contemporary art and its varied practices and positions. We offer advice and supervision, but mainly the opportunity to take ownership of the endeavour and shape the experience and outcome as theirs. Before you is the product of those efforts in C#15. The cohort of students that comprise the class of 2014–15 are now, as I write, finishing up their course work and preparing the transition to forging their own professional practices and positions in the art world. We take pride that they may already appreciate such a shift as akin a move into the grand theatre of objects variously arranged in space and time relative to perceiving subjects that is the lebenswelt, or lifeworld. This is ultimately the dynamic horizon against which they will continue to learn and live, laugh, love and labour. We wish them well and thank them for being excellent representatives of Christie’s Education. Henri Matisse a biography Timeline Henri-Emile-Benoît Matisse was born in a small town in northern North Africa to explore ornamental arabesques and flat patterns of color. This groundbreaking reassessment of the brilliant final chapter of the artist’s career includes approximately 100 cut- outs—drawn from public and private collections around the globe—along with a selection of related drawings, illustrated books, stained glass, and textiles, as well as the post-conservation debut of MoMA’s The Swimming Pool (1952). The last time New York audiences were treated to an in-depth look at the cut-outs was in 1961. Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is organized by The Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with Tate Modern, London. ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY Henri-Émile-Benoit Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France in 1869. Throughout his artistic career, Matisse worked in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, paper collage, textile design, stained glass design, and scenery sets for stage performances. Matisse’s initial excitement and interest in art led him to take art classes everyday before he went to work where he served as a lawyer’s assistant. By 1891, Matisse had abandoned his legal career to focus on studying art. He started at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moreau, and in 1896 he made his first sale of four paintings while on exhibition at the Salon de la Société Nationale. Matisse, along with fellow artists that exhibited at the 1905 salon, created a scandal by emulating Impressionistic and neo-Impressionistic styles. This controversial style with its intense non-natu- ralistic use of color, caused an art critic to call the artists “Fauves” or “wild beasts.” By 1909 the artist explored simplified figurative paintings as well as woodcut and lithographic prints. -

Henri Matisse Is Widely Regarded As the Greatest Colorist of the 20Th Century, and As a Rival to Picasso in the Importance of His Innovations
QUICK VIEW: Synopsis Henri Matisse is widely regarded as the greatest colorist of the 20th century, and as a rival to Picasso in the importance of his innovations. He emerged as a Postimpressionist, and first achieved prominence as the leader of the French movement Fauvism. Although interested in Cubism, he rejected it, and instead sought to use color as the foundation for expressive, decorative, and often monumental paintings. As he once controversially wrote, his sought to create an art that would be "a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair." Still life and the nude remained favorite subjects throughout his career; North Africa was also an important inspiration; and, towards the end of his life, he made an important contribution to collage with a series of works using cut-out shapes of color. He is also highly regarded as a sculptor. Key Ideas • Matisse used pure colors and the white of exposed canvas to create a light-filled atmosphere in his Fauve paintings. Rather than using modeling or shading to lend volume and structure to his pictures, Matisse used contrasting areas of pure, unmodulated color. These ideas continued to be important to him throughout his career. • His art was important in endorsing the value of decoration in modern art. However, although he is popularly regarded as a painter devoted to pleasure and contentment, his use of color and pattern is often deliberately disorientating and unsettling. • Matisse was heavily influenced by art from other cultures.
