This team consists of Final Score: three seniors: Shyanne Foley, Jacey Jones and Sydney Burgin. Boys Shyanne Foley, a post/guard for the Bobcats, has played WR vs. Ridgefield basketball for 14 years (since she was in preschool). Her favorite Christian basketball memory is when Coach Shelby got stuck in an alley, backed up in someone’s yard, and then ran over a stop sign. Her 57-56 favorite pre-game song is No Hands and her favorite postgame meal is a McDonald’s Happy Meal.

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Purchased by Tate 1981, de-accessioned 1995 © DACS 2005 View in Tate Collection For over four decades, artists have used organic or fugitive materials in order to instigate and interrogate processes of stasis, action, permanence, and mortality. Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), along with his contemporary, Dieter Roth (1930 –1998), pioneered this practice, probing concepts of energy, warmth, and transformation through the intelligent use of organic materials such as fat. But unlike Roth, who consistently advocated the unconstrained decomposition of his work, Beuys’ position on decay, change, and damage varied from statement to statement, and from piece to piece. As one conservator familiar with the artist’s work noted, in order to understand Beuys’ personal philosophy regarding conservation, ‘it would be necessary to read all his interviews and statements ... and even after this, one still might be restricted to speculation as to what he ... meant in this special case.’1 Unsurprisingly, museums housing Beuys sculptures and installations generally lack consistent counsel from the artist pertaining to preventive conservation, intervention, and restoration of his work. Together with codified conservation principles, artists’ statements and documentation (ideally, recorded at the time of acquisition, and at vital points in the work’s lifespan) greatly inform conservation decision- making.

Diane Jagels Title: The Animated Phenomenon: Impact Beyond Childhood Abstract This paper responds to the stigma that animated shows are “just for kids,” and that animated cartoons and films have as much importance as shows which star live actors. I analyze several American cartoons from the 2000s and 2010s, such as Phineas and Ferb, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Over the Garden Wall, which contain themes that are accessible by multiple age groups, including adults. Some of the themes include: the intelligence of cartoons; representation and the fight against stereotyping; family structures and dynamics; and foreboding themes of insecurities, growing up, and death. Many cartoons have become impactful for older audiences and I draw on firsthand responses from fans, interviews with the shows’ creators, and the episodes themselves to convey the significance of cartoons. .

Jennie Silber Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA, USA Media & Communication Department Undergraduate High Honors Thesis April 1, 2019 1 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS 2 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS Abstract This thesis analyzes and assesses the cultural impact and economic viability that the top music streaming platforms have on the consumption and discovery of music, with a specific focus on recommendation algorithms. Through the support of scholarly and journalistic research as well as my own user experience, I evaluate the known constructs that fuel algorithmic recommendations, but also make educated inferences about the variables concealed from public knowledge. One of the most significant variables delineated throughout this thesis is the power held by human curators and the way they interact with algorithms to frame and legitimize content. Additionally, I execute my own experiment by creating new user profiles on the two streaming platforms popularly used for the purpose of discovery, Spotify and SoundCloud, and record each step of the music discovery process experienced by a new user. After listening to an equal representation of all genre categories within each platform, I then compare the genre, release year, artist status, and content promotion gathered from my listening history to the algorithmically-generated songs listed in my ‘Discover Weekly’ and ‘SoundCloud Weekly’ personalized playlists. The results from this experiment demonstrate that the recommendation algorithms that power these discovery playlists intrinsically facilitate the perpetuation of a star- driven, “winner-take-all” marketplace, where new, popular, trendy, music is favored, despite how diverse of a selection the music being listened to is.

Ron, this is your story so please feel free to take it in any direction that you want as I go. Carter: I'll follow the questions. Levy: Okay. Well, we might as well start at the beginning. I know that you were born on May 4th of 1937 near Detroit. Tell us … you came from a large family … Carter: I'm from a family of six girls and two boys. I'm in the middle, I guess. Several of them have passed away in the intervening years. I have a sister who plays piano and flute. I have a sister who played viola, one who played violin, who passed away. I'm the only one who decided to try to make a living at this foolishness. Family of ten. Levy: That's a big family. Was it a struggle in those times financially? Was it comfortable? Carter: I think when you're that age – ten, twelve – you don't know those issues. I can assure you that my father, who had to work around the clock in those jobs given the racial tenor of the times, managed always to make sure we had plenty to eat, healthy foods.
