This annual ‘Event’ keeps getting bigger and bigger every year, and was of course sold-out once again. This time however, we were at a much larger venue, so a lot more people could be accommodated. It meant a record-breaking crowd was in attendance, with some of the best Songwriters walking the red carpet, and on show in an auditorium designed for the presentation of live music. The result was breathtaking, and definitely the best night ever. That’s saying something, because there have been some wonderful Awards Nights in the past. Personally, I was overwhelmed by the ‘show’ put on for the audience by our ‘Hall Of Fame’ recipients Josh Cunningham, Donna Simpson and Vikki Thorn (The Waifs). Their sheer talent as Songwriters, singers and musicians is mind-blowing, whilst their unassuming, straight forward natures, and the way they go about their craft had me (and the audience) in raptures. I was particularly impressed by the fact that they sound-checked for over an hour to get the three songs they were going to play perfect, and it showed up big-time in their performance on the night. They were simply AWESOME! Our newest Award for ‘Lifetime Achievement’ was also a big success, with the lovely Christine Anu being the inaugural choice for her work as a Songwriter in the music industry working with and for First Nation people. She has a superb voice, and as an added bonus, the honor was bestowed on her by friend and exquisite singer Casey Donovan. Thanks to all who contributed to the most incredible ‘Awards’ ever, and also a fabulous 2017, including Vice Chairman and your Editor Alan Gilmour, Directors Clare Burgess and Gary Luck, all our fantastic Regional Coordinators, and all of the folk who make the ASA the great organization that it is. To all our Sponsors, including Major Champions Wests Ashfield and APRA, a big debt of gratitude for all your help and support. It is much appreciated. And so, one and all, have a Christmas to beat the band, and please peruse this missive prepared by your Editor Alan Gilmour over the silly season. See you in 2018. Regards Denny Burgess Chairman Editor’s Message Welcome to the December 2017 edition of The Australian Songwriter. With the 2017 Australian Songwriting Contest and the 2017 National Songwriting Awards now in our rear vision mirrors, your ASA Directors are about to take a well- earned break, and re-charge our batteries for the upcoming 2018 ASA year. I’d like to thank my fellow directors, Denny Burgess, Clare Burgess and Gary Luck for their wonderful contributions to the ASA during the year. Also, my thanks to ASA volunteer, Carole Beck, for her contributions to the ASA magazine, and for her suggestions and ideas during the year. The Australian Songwriter welcomes written contributions from ASA members and friends. If you have anything that you would like to say about yourself, other songwriters/musicians/artists/new releases or upcoming events, simply send your contribution via email to the Editor at [email protected]. • Key Findings
The CMAA gratefully acknowledges the partners and supporters whose contributions and involvement provided the resources to gather and collate the data which underpins the findings in this report. Country Music in Australia 2018 1 Project Summary & Methodology 2018 was a stellar year for Australian country music. Kasey Chambers was memorably inducted as the youngest female ever into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Keith Urban was acknowledged by the US Country Music Association as its Entertainer of The Year. Morgan Evans achieved notable #1’s on US, ARIA and Australian airplay charts. Country music festivals reported record attendances and box office results, moreAustralians are listening to more country on radio than ever before and music streaming – the juggernaut driving the global and Australian industry revival, is being enthusiastically embraced by country fans listening on their phones, in their cars and on tablets and smart speakers. More Australian country music artists are writing, recording and performing and are being listened to and watched by more fans than ever before. Over a seven month period, extensive desk research, industry consultation and the responses from 4,329 country music fans and 582 artists, enabled us to chart our genre’s progress since the first and only such report - ‘Australian Country Music:An Industry Profile’, was compiled in 1997. This current report concentrated on country music live performance, the recorded music market, songs and songwriting, country music broadcast and airplay and the cultural and social value it delivers to its fans and the broader community. The accumulated data has confirmed that country music 2018 is in a growth phase that all indicators and opinions suggest will continue.

  • “Until That Song Is Born”: an Ethnographic Investigation of Teaching and Learning Among Collaborative Songwriters in Nashville
“UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill With the intent of informing the practice of music educators who teach songwriting in K– 12 and college/university classrooms, the purpose of this research is to examine how professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee—one of songwriting’s professional “hubs”—teach and learn from one another in the process of engaging in collaborative songwriting. This study viewed songwriting as a form of “situated learning” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “situated practice” (Folkestad, 2012) whose investigation requires consideration of the professional culture that surrounds creative activity in a specific context (i.e., Nashville). The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do collaborative songwriters describe the process of being inducted to, and learning within, the practice of professional songwriting in Nashville, (2) What teaching and learning behaviors can be identified in the collaborative songwriting processes of Nashville songwriters, and (3) Who are the important actors in the process of learning to be a collaborative songwriter in Nashville, and what roles do they play (e.g., gatekeeper, mentor, role model)? This study combined elements of case study and ethnography. Data sources included observation of co-writing sessions, interviews with songwriters, and participation in and observation of open mic and writers’ nights.

Jeff Apter @320kbps.mp3 [00:00:00] Welcome to the Inner West Library Speaker series. Before we begin, I would like to acknowledge the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay my respects to the elders past, present and emerging. Today's conversation will be with Jeff Apter, Jeff is the author of more than 20 music biographies, many of them bestsellers. His subjects include Johnny O'Keefe, Keith Urban, Johnny Farnham, the Bee Gees and AC/DC. Jeff worked with Rolling Stone for many years and has written about music legends Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. In 2015, he worked on the Helpmann Award nominated live show A State of Grace, The music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. Today, we speak about his new book, Friday On My Mind, The Life of George Young. This podcast is relevant to the music library, which will open at Ashfield Library in November this year. So, Jeff, can you talk a little about George Young and his early relationship with Harry Vanda while staying at the Villawood migrant hostel? [00:01:04] George Young and his family. He was one of 10, came to Australia in nineteen sixty three. They were part of what we now know, known as the ten pound POM scheme. And they've been hoping they've been invited basically over to the sunny side of Australia. And they ended up in the Villawood Migrant Hostel, which was not the most hospitable place then or now. But George one day was walking around the hostel and he heard a sound coming from the laundry room.
