April/MayApril/May 20192019 139 Road Trip!

Part Two

Ed Beard’ s “Dragonlord” Rt 66 Trip

We took a side route off the highway to visit the Grand Canyon West and walk out on the Skybridge standing on nothing but glass over 4000 feet off the ground. On the way back, we stopped to take some amazing photos in the Joshua Tree National park while tourists took pictures of the Dragonlord. Our first official stop on Route 66 was in Seligman, AZ where we met ‘Cowboy Dale’ a character of the town drawing and his signature to an old vw van parked out front famous enough to be on an iconic mural in town. The and after a trade of a copper license plate for a hoodie off Dragonlord again gained a quick crowd outside of the Ed’s back with ‘Cowboy Dale’, we were on our way. We Copper Cart, Route 66 Motorporium and the owners John stopped for a great photo op at the Roadkill Cafe, some tasty and Debbie not only had some great items in their store lunch at Snow Cap Burgers while sitting in their ‘toilet seat to buy but a mini motor museum to peruse through. They garden’ and then back on the road. were super friendly and gifted us with t-shirts designed The next stop was the Painted Desert and Petrified by their son to remember them by. Ed had to add a quick Forest. Aside from some amazing landscapes and incredible sites to see, we were able to see the telephone poles still standing as a monument to where the original Route 66 road had been and a rusted 1930’s Studebaker sedan sitting there, lost to time, as the grave marker for that long forgotten road. While in Winslow AZ, we switched drivers for a moment to reenact a famous Eagles song. But of course, instead of a girl in a flatbed Ford, it was Kelly in the Dragonlord.

14 Car Show & Cruise Guide weather started turning bad and it was time to get home. The best thing about doing a cross-country trip, driv- ing a fully airbrushed custom van or any custom build vehicle, whether it’s on route 66 or anywhere is that it becomes the nexus for all people of all ethnicities religion or economic class to get together and start a conversation. While the world continues to be divided, the one thing that all people can come together on is art, mu- sic, and the creativity that goes into building a unique custom vehicle and sharing that experience on the open road in a country that has the greatest diversity of people the planet knows. For more information about the art an airbrush of Ed Beard Jr., visit www.airbrushbybeard.com and www. In Santa Rosa, NM we stopped at the Route 66 Auto edbeardjr.com Museum. For just $5 you can enter a world of historic treasures and some new custom cars as well. This was our last stop for nostalgic Route 66 traveling however as the

18 Car Show & Cruise Guide April/May 2019 19 20 Car Show & Cruise Guide Club Subscription Help Needed! A Plea by Dave- Over the years, the Cruise Guide has done our best to get bundles of magazines out to various clubs and organizations. Due to my health, I am cutting down on the amount of miles I drive, so I am going to need help with the cost to deliver to the outlying areas. Some clubs already pay for the delivery service, and some run ads that help with the shipping costs, which I appreciate. For 2019, I am asking for a donation to partially pay the shipping costs to your club. There are 6 issues a year. For 25 copies each time please send $75; and for 50 copies send $100 for the complete season. If you purchase ads for your events, we will include the subscription in the ad cost. Cecil Drag-O-Way, 1966. If you were a drag racing in the 1960s and 1970s, you knew the Color Me Gone name even if you couldn’t recall the name of its driver, Roger Lindamood. He made that kind of an impact in his 15-year career on the quarter-mile, from his breakthrough win in Top Stock at the 1964 Nationals through more than a decade of nitro Funny Car racing with a con- sistently tough race car. Drag racing was almost an afterthought to Lindamood, who didn’t begin drag racing until he was 35, after racing on dirt and asphalt ovals, yet he turned his gift of mechanical prowess, self-promotion, and a gritty work ethic into a celebrated quarter-mile career. We lost Lindamood Oct. 14, at the age of 91. Rest in Peace, Roger, thanks for the memories.

April/May 2019 37 Club News Car Show & Cruise Guide’s All Clubs Breakfast February 23

I have lost count on how many times we have hosted this event. We had a record amount of attendees this year. It is always a great way to catch up with friends during the winter, and find out what is happening in the coming year. The Highlight of the day is when the Buick Owners of Maryland (BOOM) presented a $1000 check to Doug Wood of the Custom & Classic Car Education- al Foundation. Doug mentioned that the Foundation will be hosting a monthly Cruise and two car shows at the Harford Vinyard in 2019. It is located just down the road from where the breakfast was held. Doug is most appreciative of all the clubs that help out to help us save the hobby. ( www.SavetheHobby.org )

R.I.P. Bill Grammer Bill Grammer, a longtime mem- ber of the Street Survivors Car Club of Mary- land recently passed away. He moved to Colorado a while ago, but the club still had fond memories of Bill, and his 1957 Studebaker Goldenhawk. He helped at the weekly Car Cruise for years, organized the cruise to the Loch Raven Rehab Facility for many years. As a big Ambassador for the club, he made sure everyone knew about the annual Vet- Tri-Count Cruiser’s 23rd Year - eran’s Day Show. Other responsibilities New Year’s Day Hangover Cruise 2019 included sending out the newsletter to 300 club members. RIP Bill. So, here is the latest adventure for our multi—county rodders gath- ering on New Year’s at the Golden Corral in Waldorf. After a rainy night and with many puddles of water over the various roadway that the rodders traveled from to get to the annual Hangover Cruise, at least 50 cars came out as well as some 15 motorcycles. All arriving a various time to gather and share stores of the past years shows and pass out flyers for their show to come in 2019! True friends brought together by their hobby, their rods or their cycles! The message went out to as many as it could possible reach, for all to meet at 11 a.m. this year, at the Golden Corral!

Phillip Martin’s 1978 Dodge B100

Our van Nautique is a 1978 Dodge B100 van. I purchased her in 1980. We have made several modifications to her over the years until we decided on which direction to go with her. We have always loved the ocean. I grew up on the beach and fishing with my parents. We decided to base the theme of the van around it. My wife and I work together with ideas for her as far as the theme. The murals on the exterior were ideas we came up with and I had in my head. I just could not draw them to put on paper to have an airbrush painter put them on for me. We found the closest drawings on eBay and we then took board. There are various engravings on the glass inside as well as her to Brian Gavek of Gavek Graphics in Centre Hall, PA. We wood on the interior which I did as well. As a result of our going talked to Brian about all out for the theme on the van we have won the Best how we wanted it done. Theme award 6 times at the Van Nationals. The engine is the original 318 but we modified it with a Holley 4bbl carbure- tor, Hedman headers and Borla exhaust. The wheels are Sendel’s with Firestone tires back and Kelly’s front. I mounted LED’s un- derneath which really show up great at night. The running boards were replaced last year with solid ash which were burned and treated with epoxy. We plan on replacing the bumpers with ash as well. Hoping this will be done soon. When we set up for shows, such as the Van Nationals, we go all out for theme. From interior to exterior. My wife sets up everything on the interior to her satisfaction. If I try to set it up I know that it will not be anywhere close to as well as she does. I do the exterior cleaning and set up. We came up with the idea of a dock for the exterior. I built a dock the lays outside on the ground on the passenger side of the van. 46 Car Show & Cruise Guide October November 2018 41 April/May 2019 47 Del Tech High School photos by Bill Ross

Delaware’s Technical High Schools met at the Delcastle campus in March under the direction of Tony Tiberi. The students competed in various aspects of automotive repairs while being evaluated by industry experts. I was very impressed by the students’ knowledge and expertise. You should stop by the High School when they hold a car show in May- You’ll be impressed by what some of the Guys & Gals do; and make sure you check out the trophies they make.

ank Johnson is a bitter man. After losing his wife, Anne, to a long illness, he loses his faith. He becomes a creature of routine, spend- ing his days visiting his wife’s gravesite and hanging out with the H“baker’s dozen,” a group of guys who gather at the local diner for breakfast

and car talk. When Hank receives news from his estranged daughter that Heart &Soul Heart he is about to become “Grandpa Hank”, his best friend, Joe, talks him into selling his house in Bakersfield and heading back east. “Babies have a way of making things right again,” advises Joe.
