Déjeuner et dans l’après-midi, visite de l’intéressant musée archéologique de Mathura qui présente une riche collection de sculptures datées principalement entre le IIIe siècle avant notre ère et le XIIe siècle de notre ère, en particulier des œuvres des époques kushane et gupta relevant de l’École de Mathura. Promenade sur les ghats et dans le bazar en fin d'après-midi. Dîner à l’hôtel et nuit à Mathura. J 3 - Dimanche 30 janvier 2022 Mathura – Morena Le matin, suite et fin de la visite du musée. Après le déjeuner départ en train pour Morena et arrivée en fin d'après-midi. Dîner et nuit en hôtel simple à Morena. J 4 - Lundi 31 janvier 2022 Morena – Nurabad – Bateshwar – Padhavali – Mitaoli – Morena Départ pour Nurabad et visite de l’un des derniers ponts datant de l’époque moghole. Celui-ci fut construit sur la rivière Sankh durant le règne de Jahangir en l’honneur de son épouse Nur Mahal et fut un jalon important sur la route militaire menant vers le Deccan. Il garde son aspect fortifié et ses tourelles surmontées de chhatri. Visite ensuite de la tombe de Ganna Begum, construite en 1775 pour l’épouse du Vizir de Nurabad. Continuation vers Bateshwar, un ensemble de près de deux cents petits temples construits à flanc de colline, en partie autour d’un bassin. Ils sont consacrés à Shiva, Vishnou et Shakti, ce qui témoigne d’une activité tantrique entre le VIIIe et le Xe siècle lors de leur construction sous la dynastie des Gurjara-Pratihara. À peu de distance, à Padhavali, visite, au cœur d’une forteresse du XVIIIe siècle, du temple du Xe siècle dédié à Vishnou (ou Shiva ?) dont le plafond du mandapa – hall – et le fronton du sanctuaire sont admirablement bien décorés. Déjeuner en restaurant local ou pique-nique puis visite du grand temple circulaire dédié aux Soixante-quatre Yogini à Mitaoli. Situé au sommet d’une colline, il est accessible par une montée d’une centaine de marches. Deux kilomètres plus loin, dans le village de Amledha, un petit temple en partie en ruine et dédié à Shiva représente la quintessence du temple villageois sous la dynastie des Kachchhapaghata (XIe-XIIe siècles). Retour à Morena en fin d’après-midi. J 5 - Mardi 1er février 2022 Morena – Sihoniya – Gohad – Aïti – Gwalior Départ le matin en direction de Sihoniya et visite des ruines du temple Kakanmath, dédié à une forme de Shiva, daté du début du XIe siècle (dynastie Kachchhapaghata dont Sihonya fut temporairement capitale) mais en partie détruit au cours du XIVe siècle par un séisme. Visite également du double temple dédié à Ambika Devi (Déesse Mère protectrice du 22e Tirthankara jaïn, Neminath), un ensemble reconstitué au début du XVe siècle par un monarque Tomar à partir de parties de temples datant du IXe au XIIe siècle (dynasties Pratihara et Kachchhapaghata). Continuation vers Gohad, petite ville fondée en 1505 par un guerrier Jat, Rana Singhandev II, qui s’y créa un petit royaume. Au cœur de sa capitale, le Fort construit la même année fut le premier d’une série de 360 forts érigés pour défendre son État. Protégé par quatre lignes de défense, il fut agrandi et complété par les successeurs de Rana Singhandev II. Après le déjeuner, court trajet jusqu’à Dang et visite du temple d’époque Pratihara dédié à Shiva, puis continuation vers Bhensora où un temple dédié à Shiva présente un style de très belle facture daté des Kachchhapaghata. Parmi les sculptures de toute beauté ornant la base du temple, des scènes avec des musiciens. Un petit détour par le village de Aïti permettra enfin de visiter deux petits temples des Xe-XIIe siècles, l’un dédié à Surya, dieu solaire, l’autre à Vishnou. Dîner et nuit à Gwalior. J 6 - Mercredi 2 février 2022 Gwalior – Naresar – Gwalior Le matin, excursion à Naresar où un ensemble de 22 temples dans un joli site à flanc de colline boisée (moyennement facile d’accès, petite marche nécessaire) présente des traits architecturaux intéressants qui annoncent des évolutions qui vont se retrouver ultérieurement à Gwalior ou à Khajuraho. Ces temples ont été construits entre la fin du VIIIe et le XIIe siècle, période majeure de l’évolution de l’architecture religieuse en Inde du Nord. Retour à Gwalior pour le déjeuner. Dans l’après-midi, début des visites de Gwalior par le Sarod Ghar, musée du sarod, un luth d’origine mixte irano-indienne devenu un instrument classique de la musique hindustanie. Dîner et nuit à Gwalior. J 7 - Jeudi 3 février 2022 Gwalior Première de deux journées complètes de visites à Gwalior. C’est au Ve siècle de notre ère que la ville de Gwalior a été fondée par un chef Rajpout, Suraj Sen, pour honorer un saint ermite, Gwalipa, qui l’avait soigné de la lèpre. Mais le choix de cet emplacement était aussi éminemment stratégique car le rocher de Gwalior, au sommet duquel fut construit le Fort – certainement par le roi des Huns Mihirakula –, commande et contrôle le principal passage entre la plaine du Gange et la côte occidentale de la péninsule indienne, Gwalior devenant ainsi le passage presque obligé des routes de commerce et des armées des royaumes de l’Inde du Nord en direction du Dekkan et des ports. La ville passa ensuite sous contrôle des Pratihara, puis des Kachchhapaghata avant d’être prise par les Afghans Ghorides de 1226 à 1398. Mais c’est sous la dynastie des Rajpoutes Tomar, fondée en 1398 à Gwalior par Bir Singh Deo, un adepte du jaïnisme comme ses successeurs, que la ville connut ses plus grandes heures de gloire. Le Fort fut reconstruit et agrandi et même si des aménagements moghols y furent ajoutés, ceux-ci ne modifièrent pas notoirement l’aspect du fort tomar. La dynastie fut vaincue en 1526 par les Lodi qui ne conservèrent la ville que quelques semaines avant d’être vaincus à leur tour par les armées de Babur. Les Moghols gardèrent la ville jusqu’au milieu du XVIIIe siècle mais firent de son Fort une prison d’État pour personnages de marque, en particulier des princes moghols en disgrâce. Marathes et Jat luttèrent alors pour le contrôle de ce haut-lieu stratégique et la famille marathe des Scindia s’en empara en 1765 et en garda le contrôle jusqu’en 1948, ayant combattu aux côtés des Anglais lors de la Révolte de 1857. Le Fort et les nombreux monuments qui l’entourent font de Gwalior une étape majeure dans la découverte du Madhya Pradesh. Visite du Fort pendant la matinée et le début d’après-midi. Parmi les monuments visités : les murailles, les reliefs rupestres jaïns, l’étonnant temple Teli Ka Mandir, les deux temples Sas (vishnouïte) et Bahu (shivaïte) construits à la fin du XIe siècle dans un style fortement influencé par l’art gujarati, le palais de Man Singh Tomar, le musée archéologique, etc.
