Tolkien inevitably leads to a question of belief, that is, the question of whether readers actually believe in the fictional world and how that experience of belief generates meaning. Much of the scholarship on fantasy literature is very interested in this question, beginning with Tolkien’s own discussions of “Secondary belief” in his essay “On Faiy- Stories.” The existing criticism has succeeded in establishing a lexicon of terms that describes how a work of fantasy conveys meaning. -

You are heading to the dark land of Mordor in the realm of Middle-earth. The events that are set to transpire here are some time between the events of the Hobbit and those of the Lord of the Rings but as a whole do not really fit into Tolkien’s canon. Until recently the rangers of Gondor held the Black Gate of Mordor and all was relatively quiet in the land of shadow. Orc activity seemed on the increase and now they have taken back the gate as the first step in consolidating a power that will threaten the whole of Middle-earth. You arrive just as a Gondorian Ranger of the Black Gate called Talion is revived and inhabited by the wraith of the long dead Ñoldorin prince Celebrimbor. Together the two of them will cut a swathe through the ranks of the uruk in a quest to hinder Sauron and avenge Talion’s butchered family. Elsewhere the white wizard Saruman is already looking enviously towards Mordor and has many spies both amongst the people and some of the fauna. Within Mordor the uruks dominate much of the landscape, building great forts and war machines to prepare for the wars to come. The Rangers of the Black Gate are all but destroyed but remnants within the Outcasts of Udûn hold desperately to their lives and freedom. The vast amount of the human population of Mordor has been enslaved but the Tribesmen of Núrn in the southeast continue to resist the orcs. The shadow of Mount Doom falls upon you. -

Clashing Perspectives of World Order in JRR Tolkien's Middle-Earth
ABSTRACT Fate, Providence, and Free Will: Clashing Perspectives of World Order in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth Helen Theresa Lasseter Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. Through the medium of a fictional world, Tolkien returns his modern audience to the ancient yet extremely relevant conflict between fate, providence, and the person’s freedom before them. Tolkien’s expression of a providential world order to Middle-earth incorporates the Northern Germanic cultures’ literary depiction of a fated world, while also reflecting the Anglo-Saxon poets’ insight that a single concept, wyrd, could signify both fate and providence. This dissertation asserts that Tolkien, while acknowledging as correct the Northern Germanic conception of humanity’s final powerlessness before the greater strength of wyrd as fate, uses the person’s ultimate weakness before wyrd as the means for the vindication of providence. Tolkien’s unique presentation of world order pays tribute to the pagan view of fate while transforming it into a Catholic understanding of providence. The first section of the dissertation shows how the conflict between fate and providence in The Silmarillion results from the elvish narrator’s perspective on temporal events. Chapter One examines the friction between fate and free will within The Silmarillion and within Tolkien’s Northern sources, specifically the Norse Eddas, the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf, and the Finnish The Kalevala. Chapter Two shows that Tolkien, following Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy, presents Middle-earth’s providential order as including fated elements but still allowing for human freedom. The second section shows how The Lord of the Rings reflects but resolves the conflict in The Silmarillion between fate, providence, and free will. -

R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium begins with an enchanted sky, which provides the narrative framework for a restoration ecology based on human alliance with other creatures. This alliance protects local and planetary environments from being treated like garbage. Tolkien’s restorative framework begins in the Silmarillion with “The Music of the Ainur,” a cosmogony that details the creation of the universe by Powers of the One figured as singers and players in a great music that becomes the cosmos. This is neither an organic model of the world as body nor a technical model of the world as machine, but the world as performance and enchantment, coming- into-being as an aesthetic phenomenon. What the hobbits call “magic” in the Lord of the Rings is enchantment, understood as participation in the music of continuous creation. In his essay “On Fairy-Stories,” Tolkien theorized literary enchantment as the creation of a “Secondary World” of art that others could inhabit. -

Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings Brittany Andrews Crown College Abstract Although seldom studied as a commentary on leadership and the various forms of underlying power, The Lord of the Rings offers extended insight on power and its relation to human nature. Tolkien recognizes the potential evil of power, but he also understands humanity’s need for leadership and power. It is in this paradox that the studies of John French and Bertram Raven are immensely insightful. In a 1959 study and continuing research of more recent years, French and Raven conclude that there are six basic types of social power used to influence people. Each of these bases of power can be found in characters in The Lord of the Rings. They are portrayed in a way that helps to illuminate the importance that Tolkien places on utilizing self-awareness, teamwork, and community when exercising power. Although seldom studied as a commentary on leadership and various forms of underlying power, The Lord of the Rings offers extended insight on power and its relation to human nature. There can be little doubt that, on a surface level, Tolkien is wary of power—Middle Earth almost falls due to a malicious buildup of it. While Tolkien’s not so subtle allusions to Hitler’s ironworks and proliferation of weapons fashion some of Tolkien’s political commentary, his exploration of leadership and human nature have far-wider applications. Tolkien recognizes the potential evil of power and how easily humans are swayed by the influence it promises, yet he also understands humanity’s need for leadership.
