UITP MENA Transport Congress Kicks Off The Official Monthly Magazine of Dubai`s RTA Issue No. 95 May 2016 UITP MENA Transport Congress kicks off DIGAE displays RTA’s Achievements RTA wins four DGEP Awards A Bedazzling Exhibition In November 2013, Dubai celebrated another accomplishment added to its great achievements, after the declaration of its winning the right to host the Expo 2020 Exhibition. This incredible winning was an expected result of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. This achievement also took place thanks to the consistent governmental policies that aim to enhance and develop the underlying infrastructure, side by side with the pioneering services that made Dubai one of the main points of interest to the world in the financial, business, and tourism sectors. H.E. Mattar Al Tayer This privileged international position of Dubai enabled it to be the backbone Director General and Chairman of connection between continents. Two-thirds of the world’s population of the Board of Executive Directors live 8-hours away from Dubai. Visitors and tourists flocking into Dubai from the world over are in constant increase thanks to its solid infrastructure and excellent services. In 2015, Dubai welcomed more than 14 million and 200,000 visitors exploring its famous shopping malls, activities, and leisure events. The Expo 2020 will definitely be another attractive exhibition to visitors and tourists, with the participant of more than 200 companies and institutions. The expected number of visitors during the Exhibition, which takes place from October 2020 to April 2021, exceeds 25 million, with 70% from abroad. The exhibition is expected to attract 300,000 visitors daily, and that number requires massive and precise planning, which will be reflected on Dubai’s reputation in the management of the huge international of events. The plan must include ensuring the ease and availability of transportation for visitors between their places of stay and the exhibition location. Therefore, Dubai is benefiting from its experience in hosting and managing large worldwide known events such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank meetings, Dubai Airshow, Dubai Shopping Festival, and the New Year Celebrations attended by around 1.7 million all gathered in the small space of Khalifa Tower. In preparation for a successful Expo 2020 exhibition, RTA has implemented an integrated plan for roads and transportation to serve the exhibition. The plan includes details for solutions that address the demand of moving people from their places of stay to the exhibition location along with managing the movement within the exhibition. Sustainability was highly considered while developing all plans, as one of the main goals of Expo 2020. To ensure awareness and sustainability, the plan includes encouraging the use of public transportation whenever possible. It is expected that public transportation هيئة ُم ِبتكره will be of 51% of the transportation used to reach the location of the exhibition out of the total number of trips. The execution of this plan has already started by developing essential procedures including extending the Red Line of the metro by 15 Km from the Nakheel Harbor & Tower Station to the Expo 2020 Location. The extension will contain 7 stations, and one will be dedicated for servicing the exhibition. It is expected that the number of visitors who will be using the metro will reach around 12,000 passenger per hour in one direction. Furthermore, more than 17 bus stations will be provided specifically for Expo 2020 distributed in Dubai, where visitors go to these stations first, and then they will be transported to the Expo 2020 location through more than 500 buses. The same plan is to be applied throughout the rest of the emirates in collaboration with other authorities where multiple buses will be designated to transferring visitors from different stations to the Expo 2020 location and vice a versa. According to the plan, around 49,000 parking will be available around the exhibition’s location for visitors who prefer coming to Expo 2020 by their private vehicles. These visitors will also be bused out from the parking area to Expo 2020 location. In addition, 1900 taxis will be available for servicing the exhibition, with parking and facilities to support these vehicles within the exhibition’s location. Also, a network of main and sub roads is currently under development to provide flexibility in getting in and out of the exhibition for all sorts of transportation. Many other RTA’s projects are being developed to help regulate transportation from and to Expo 2020 location. These developments include the drastic improvement of Traffic Control Center, in addition to the establishment of Unified Control Center EC3 to approach full integration among all transportation systems. Totally, it is expected that the amount required to build an integrated road and transportation infrastructure will reach around AED12 billion. However, considerations were taken to make sure that these transportation systems and infrastructure are to be utilized fully for the benefit of economical and urban projects rising around Expo 2020 location. It is worth mentioning that Expo 2020 is not the end of the journey. It is just another step in Dubai’s journey towards leadership and excellence. Infrastructure development in general, including development of roads and transportation, will always be in the cycle of development and enhancement with the focus on the integration between transportation services and economical and social events. In addition, Dubai is also transforming to smart applications as part its plan that was established based on the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai to make Dubai the smartest city in the world by 2017. His Highness launched the smart self-driving transport strategy, which aims to divert arount 25% of transportation in Dubai into smart and driverless by 2030. The annual revenue is expected to reach up to AED 46.4 billion. RTA is also putting in major efforts to enhance the role of public transportation through innovative and smart services that aim to ease people’s transportation, and allow them to reach main transportation points easily. Smart services will go beyond convention including driverless vehicles and buses that work through smart applications, and these applications have been tested and presented around a limited diameter during the Middle East and North Africa Transport Exhibition held in Dubai from 25 to 27 April 2016. More techniques and transportation systems are to be added such as the Cable Car and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). In conclusion, we reassure that all our plans are drawn from RTA’s main vision “Safe and Smooth Transport for All” along with our government’s vision “People’s Happiness.” CONTENT Our News Exploring cooperation 22 with British & Singaporean delegations 06 Achievements 24 (8009090) the Best in the Middle East 24 AVM scoops Gulf Engineering Innovation Forum Award 25 The 4th Scientific Research Award to drive innovation & knowledge 15 Reciprocal Advice on decreasing vehicle movement during bad weather Ads Al Masar warns against possible increase in Initiative accidents during rainfall UITP MENA Transport 15 Congress Kicks off «DIGAE» displays RTA`s 06 acheivements “RTA” wins 4 awards 10 in DGEP Awards 2016 Our Projects Our Services 26 “Wafi” bridge joins Dubai’s roads network 34 Fitness tests to protect the private chauffeurs AED 611m for Sheikh Rashid Rd – Sheikh Improvements in school transport services in Dubai 28 Khalifa bin Zayed Rd Interchange Project 34 Completion rate touches 30% for Godolphin’s New parking services via “Drivers & Vehicles” app 30 Parallel Roads Project 35 30 15 Cover Story “Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition” displays RTA’s Projects and Success Stories Inaugurated by Mohamed bin Rashid who checked RTA’s section Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition commenced with a theme of “Local Governments, Global Achievements.” RTA has participated in this event by bringing a bundle of its outstanding achievements and strategic projects, its unique services along with its 10-year anniversary drive.
