Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract When he died in 1924, Joseph Conrad, who was named a ‘racist’ by Chinua Achebe (1977) and defended by others as taking an anti-imperialist stance (Brantlinger 1996), was a total stranger to the Chinese readers, whose country was made a semi-colony in the late nineteenth century. In the 1930s, however, four of his works were translated and published within four years, all commissioned by the Committee on Editing and Translation funded by the China Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture. The thesis investigates the Chinese translations of Conrad’s works published during the Republican Era in 1912-1937, exploring the power relations between the translators as agents and the social structure in which they operated. The thesis is divided into six chapters. After the introduction, I describe, in Chapter 2, the translators’ practice in terms of their narrating positions on the textual and paratextual levels as reflected in the translations of the sea stories borrowing analytical models on narrative discourse devised by Gérard Genette and Roger Fowler. I proceed in Chapter 3 with an account of the commissioner, tracking down the organization of the China Foundation and the Committee on Editing and Translation which initiated the project of translating World Classics (including Conrad’s works) in the 1930s. In Chapter 4, I reassess the notion of ‘faithfulness’, a key concept in the discourse of translation in theory and criticism at the time. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice as the theoretical framework, I argue that the practice of the translators, who created the image of Conrad through their translations, can be explained with reference to their relations with other agents (commissioners, theorists, critics, etc.) occupying different positions within the intellectual field, and the habitus which mediated their position and the social structure they were engaged in Chapter 5, followed by the conclusion. 3 Acknowledgements It is another adventurous voyage coming to an end, ten years after the last one concluded in August 1999. This movement to introduce the Chinese population to foreign literature started in the late Qing period. According to David Pollard, ‘Xinxi xiantan’ [A Garrulous Story], the first complete translation of a foreign novel was serialized from January 1873 to January 1875 in the Chinese literary magazine Yinghuan suoji [Scraps from Land and Sea] (Pollard 1998:6). Translations were not particularly well-received until the genre of new fiction was propagated by reformists such as Liang Qichao and successful works such as Lin Shu’s Chahua nü (La Dame aux Camélias) began to draw the attention of Chinese readers. A statistical survey carried out by Teruo Tarumoto shows that the 1,488 translated works of fiction published in book form or serialized in literary journals in the 1912-1920 period represented a significant increase on the 1,016 titles released between 1840 and 1911 (about 900 of which came in the 1903-1911 period). The sheer number of new translated works published in the later period is impressive, as is the wide range of authors represented including Arthur Conan Doyle, Nick Carter, Henry Rider Haggard, Washington Irving, Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas père, Jules Verne, Victor Hugo, Maurice Leblanc, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Oshikawa Shunrou, Shiba Shirou and Kuroiwa Ruikou, to name but a few (Tarumoto 1998:40). Chinese translations of foreign literary works in modern China have long been a focus of scholars. Research on the introduction and representation of foreign writers in China can mostly be categorized into two types. The first type – quantitative reports on published translations – is best exemplified by Xie Tianzhen and Zha Mingjian’s Zhongguo ershi shiji 9 weiguo wenxue fanyishi [A History of Twentieth-century Foreign Literary Translations in China] (2007). The researchers provide what resembles a database as they give a detailed overview of the introduction of authors from the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and other European countries, in addition to those from the U.S., Canada, Latin American countries, Australia, Japan, India, and other Asian and African countries since 1898, providing information such as the years and journals in which Chinese translations of their works were published, the publishers involved, and the possible initiatives behind the translation projects carried out, as well as describing how the translations were received by critics. In two of their 24 chapters, Xie and Zha assess the achievements of celebrated translators: Liang Qichao, Yan Fu, Lin Shu, Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, Mao Dun, Guo Moruo and Zheng Zhenduo. They also devote a chapter to outlining the contributions of literary groups, literary journals and publishers to the introduction of foreign literature to modern China. Such informative studies offer both a general picture of translation activities in different historical periods and resources that provide a basis for further examination of individual cases. In the second type of research, scholars adopt a qualitative approach by focusing on literary texts or individual authors. This type of research can be launched on a textual level through a comparison of the original with the translation or among different Chinese versions of the same source text. The investigators examine translated texts to explore how the originals have been interpreted in China.

Building Fukan as a Chinese Public Sphere: Zhang Dongsun and Learning Light* NUAN GAO Hanover College ABSTRACT This article attempts to explore the relevance of the public sphere, conceptualized by Jürgen Habermas, in the Chinese context. The author focuses on the case of Learning Light (Xuedeng), one of the most reputable fukans, or newspaper supplements, of the May Fourth era (1915–1926), arguing that fukan served a very Habermasian function, in terms of its independence from power intervention and its inclusiveness of incorporating voices across political and social strata. Through examining the leadership of Zhang Dongsun, editor in chief of Learning Light, as well as the public opinions published in this fukan, the author also discovers that, in constructing China’s public sphere, both the left and moderate intellectuals of the May Fourth era used conscious effort and shared the same moral courage, although their roles were quite different: The left was more prominent as passionate and idealist spiritual leaders shining in the center of the historic stage, whereas in comparison, the moderates acted as pragmatic and rational organizers, ensuring a benevolent environment for the stage.

Par l’impact incontestable et durable de ses traductions d’œuvres occidentales (à part Darwin, il faut citer notamment Rousseau, J. S. Mill, Spencer et Haeckel), c’est certainement la personnalité la plus typique de la philosophie évolutionniste chinoise, bien que son rôle soit encore sous-estimé par les commentateurs contemporains dans ce domaine1. Il est né le 17 juillet 1881 à Gongcheng, aujourd’hui un district de la région de Guilin (province de Guangxi), d’un parent fonctionnaire2. But racial equality was not a particularly important topic for China because China had other priorities. It was interested in regaining its own possessions and sovereign interests, and in finding a solution to the problem of Shandong in the Twenty-One Demands. China used its approval of the racial equality proposal when it was submitted for the second time as a tool to ensure that the bare minimum of its relationship with Japan would be maintained. Giving its approval to the proposal was a way of showing that although China was highly critical of Japan and skeptical of its intentions, it did not intend to risk an all-out confrontation and a total breach of relations. Across Chinese society, most people were extremely critical of Japan’s actions and saw its efforts on race as fundamentally connected to Japanese Pan-Asianism. On the other hand, in Taiwan, the racial equality proposal was viewed within the context of the policies of assimilation and equality. There were some people, both within Japan and Taiwan, who argued that Japan should put its house in order before raising the issue of racial equality or the eradication of racial prejudice with the world. Nevertheless, it did not necessarily mean that the racial equality proposal was at the forefront of what intellectuals were discussing in Taiwan, or that it was part of what inspired them to organize a petition movement to establish a Taiwanese parliament or to debate educational problems.

Though Macbeth was introduced to China just before the May 4th Movement in 1919, its characters and plot have attracted the world in the past 100 years. Macbeth was firstly adapted into a folk play Theft of a Nation during the modern play period, to mock Yuan Shikai’s restoration of the monarchy, who was considered as a usurper of Qing dynasty, followed by Li Jianwu’s adaptation Wang Deming, Kun opera Bloody Hands, Taiwanese version of Beijing opera Lust and the City, Hong Kong version of Cantonese opera The Traitor, Macao version of small theater play If I were the King, Anhui opera Psycho, Shaoxing opera General Ma Long, Wu opera Bloody Sword, a monodrama of Sichuan opera Lady Macbeth, and an experimental Kun opera Lady.

    Journal of East Asian Libraries, No. 140, Oct. 2006 CHINESE ORAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS AT COLUMBIA: TOWARD BETTER ACCESS1 Chengzhi Wang Columbia University Introduction Source materials keep their scholarly value unabated with the passage of time. This is true of the Chinese Oral History collections at Columbia. Most of the collections were created, acquired in association with the Chinese Oral History Project undertaken about three decades ago, but they are still frequently inquired about and consulted by students and scholars researching modern China. All the original Chinese oral history collections are kept at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML) at Columbia. Some difficulties in accessing the collections from afar and at Columbia have been reported by new users. Among other problems, new users assume that records for these Chinese-language oral histories have been completely entered into CLIO (Columbia Libraries Information Online), Columbia’s online catalog, and converted to LC pinyin system, and so are searchable in CLIO, but in fact this is not true. Many authors and titles of the oral histories, if known, are not directly searchable. Some general titles of oral history projects are searchable, and the search results offer substantial useful information in great detail. Yet, few users would search CLIO using the correct general titles, and some specific personal papers and archives cannot be located this way.2 Moreover, it seems the Journal of East Asian Libraries and other library professional periodicals have not carried any articles focusing on this important oral history collection.3 The Chinese Oral History project at Columbia officially started in 1958 and ended in 1980.
