DESCRIPTORS Comparative Analysis; Guidelines; *Media Adaptation; *Narration; *Novels; *Programing (Broadcast); Public Television; Television Research IDENTIFIERS British Broadcasting Corporation ABSTRACT Noting that little theoretical work has been done on the processes of adapting novels for television viewing, and that what discussion there is tends to concentrate on judgments about "faithfulness" to the original, this paper suggests that more can be gained from approaching television adaptations in a less literal way, and shows how the differences and similarities between the novel and its television adaptation can be mapped out. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, "Tender is the Night," is offered as an example of the kind of adaptation that is an important element in British television programming, and a brief review of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and the Seventh Network, Australia, production of the novel and its exhibition history is provided as background for the textual analysis that follows. The ensuing discussion (1) raises some general questions about the differences between verbal and visual sign systems and the nature of the changes generated by the shift from words to images; (2) defines and gives examples of a number of strategies believed to be central to the process of adaptation; and (3) analyzes the complexity of the adaptation process by looking carefully at a short section of the television program. -

Dennis Potter: an Unconventional Dramatist
Dennis Potter: An Unconventional Dramatist Dennis Potter (1935–1994), graduate of New College, was one of the most innovative and influential television dramatists of the twentieth century, known for works such as single plays Son of Man (1969), Brimstone and Treacle (1976) and Blue Remembered Hills (1979), and serials Pennies from Heaven (1978), The Singing Detective (1986) and Blackeyes (1989). Often controversial, he pioneered non-naturalistic techniques of drama presentation and explored themes which were to recur throughout his work. I. Early Life and Background He was born Dennis Christopher George Potter in Berry Hill in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire on 17 May 1935, the son of a coal miner. He would later describe the area as quite isolated from everywhere else (‘even Wales’).1 As a child he was an unusually bright pupil at the village primary school (which actually features as a location in ‘Pennies From Heaven’) as well as a strict attender of the local chapel (‘Up the hill . usually on a Sunday, sometimes three times to Salem Chapel . .’).2 Even at a young age he was writing: I knew that the words were chariots in some way. I didn’t know where it was going … but it was so inevitable … I cannot think of the time really when I wasn’t [a writer].3 The language of the Bible, the images it created, resonated with him; he described how the local area ‘became’ places from the Bible: Cannop Ponds by the pit where Dad worked, I knew that was where Jesus walked on the water … the Valley of the Shadow of Death was that lane where the overhanging trees were.4 I always fall back into biblical language, but that’s … part of my heritage, which I in a sense am grateful for.5 He was also a ‘physically cowardly’6 and ‘cripplingly shy’7 child who felt different from the other children at school, a feeling heightened by his being academically more advanced. -

If Max Harris played the son, nothing else is known of him. Dennis Potter supplied several other titles of special interest to the archive, most notably his superb serial “The Singing Detective” (wartime boyhood guilt intertwines with adult gumshoe fantasy in the mind of a patient hospitalised with a crippling skin disease) and the less pleasing “DREAMCHILD” (an elderly Alice Liddell on her first cruise to America is haunted by disturbing recollections of her childhood acquaintance with Lewis Carroll, and nightmarish encounters with his creations). As with director Peter Greenaway, however, Potter's private preoccupations were sometimes allowed to override narrative consistency and intellectual rigour. At least, he was never less than interesting (something one could not accuse Derek Jarman of, for example). -

In this issue, Tom Mclver again brings his historical scholarship to bear on an issue relevant to creationism. This time, he explores the history of and the major players in the development and promotion of the "gap theory." Rarely do we treat in detail alternative creationist theories, preferring instead to focus upon the young- Earth special creationists who are so politically militant regarding public educa- tion. However, coverage of different creationist views is necessary from time to time in order to provide perspective and balance for those involved in the controversy. The second article compares scripture to the doctrines of young-Earth special crea- tionists and finds important disparities. Author Stanley Rice convincingly shows that "scientific" creationists add their own imaginative ideas in an effort to pseudoscientifically "flesh out" scripture. But why do so many people accept creationist notions? Some have maintained that the answer may be found through the study of demographics. George E. Webb explores that possibility in "Demographic Change and Antievolution Sentiment" and comes to some interesting conclusions. Champlain, in his map, represents a whale spouting in the harbor of Quebec, three hundred and sixty miles from what is called the mouth of the river; and Charlevoix takes his reader to the summit of Cape Diamond to see the “porpoises, white as snow,” sporting on the surface of the harbor of Quebec. And Boucher says in 1661, “from there (Tadoussac) to Montreal is found a great quantity of Marsouins blancs.” Several whales have been taken pretty high up the river since I was there. P.H. Gosse, in his “Canadian Naturalist,” p. 171 (London, 1840), speaks of “the white dolphin of the St. Lawrence (Delphinum Canadensis),” as considered different from those of the sea. “The Natural History Society of Montreal offered a prize, a few years ago, for an essay on the Cetacea of the St. Lawrence, which was, I believe, handed in.” In Champlain’s day it was commonly called “the Great River of Canada.” More than one nation has claimed it. Nicol, B.A. (Hons) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia Discipline of English and Cultural Studies School of Social and Cultural Studies 2010 ! "! ""! ! Abstract Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888), the British naturalist, biologist and science populariser, is the type of writer who will, on the same page, transcribe the minute details of the orientation of ‘small nuclear lamina’ on the ‘angular plates’ of a tortoise, and refer to the whole as a ‘high-domed house of bones’. Memorably described by Stephen Jay Gould as ‘the David Attenborough of his day’, Gosse wrote popular natural history volumes that sought an unsteady balance between exacting biological detail, engaging narrative anthropomorphism, and firm natural theology. These registers contribute to a discursive practice, exploration of which will inform my own approach to Gosse’s oeuvre. Gosse’s writing caught the imagination of the Victorian reading public: works such as A Naturalist’s Rambles on the Devonshire Coast (1853) brought the middle class to the shore; The Aquarium (1854) brought the shore back into the middle class home; and The Romance of Natural History (1860) taught the ‘Poet’s Way’ of nature studies. But, as Lynn Merrill puts it, ‘Of Philip Gosse, two legacies remain—both of them unfortunate’. Today Gosse is remembered principally as a symbol, rather than a writer: as the withholding, Calvinist bully of Edmund Gosse’s Father and Son (1907), or as the supposedly feeble casuist of the Omphalos model (1857), who sought to run Genesis and geology in parallel, through a model of implied history.
