President’s Message Dear Congregants,

It is hard to believe that Temple Sinai will be celebrating its tenth anniversary next May. A lot of good things have happened since May 2007. Today, Temple Sinai is the most stable since it came into existence. This is due to a small group of people both past and present working very hard to get us to this point.

There is a very small staff and core of volunteers who are dedicated to Temple Sinai. Without them we would not exist. Why do some people work for the Temple and/or donate funds? Each individual has their own reason for volunteering or donating. I can only tell you why I do it.

When I retired in 2011, becoming President of a synagogue was the furthest thing from my mind. I am not a religious person and doubt that I will ever be. In fact, I only went to temple for High Holy Days. I have attended services at Temple Sinai more in the last year than in the past five decades. There is a spiritual side to Temple Sinai that keeps me coming back. When I leave a service, I feel better than when I entered. This was exemplified by the Rosh Hashana service this year.

So why do I spend 20-30 hours per week working for Temple Sinai? My passion for Temple Sinai is quite simple: the young people that are part of the Temple Sinai Family. It started with my grandchildren, Alek and Flora. They love Religious School and services at Temple Sinai and I wanted to help ensure that Temple Sinai would remain viable for them. That reason changed when they moved to Arizona in July. When I learned they were going to move, I had to rethink if I wanted to continue to be involved at Temple Sinai. It still comes down to young people. We don’t have as many young families as members as I would like to see, but the number is increasing.

We are doing the right things. Rabbi and Heather with Tot Shabbat, Friday Night Live and Shabbat After Dark. Sharon with the Religious School and Shenker Academy. Brian Williams who is the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 770 and leader of the Junior High Youth Group, and Isaac Cohen, leader of the High School Youth Group. These people are providing programs and events that make young people want to be a part of Temple Sinai. These are some of the many programs and events your contributions support. Over time, we will have more young families as members.

I want to thank the Clergy, staff, officers and Board and the volunteers for all they do for Temple Sinai. They are a great group of people and enjoyable to work with.

I have told you about the Temple leadership. Now I will tell you what Temple Sinai needs from you, the Congregation. We need you to get involved, volunteer, attend events and donate money. If you cannot donate, please consider volunteering your time for a committee or event. Our members are out biggest asset.

L’shalom,

Les Sherman President

November 2016 3

I celebrated an anniversary last month. Not my wedding anniversary nor the anniversary Rabbi Malcolm Cohen [email protected] of my arrival in Las Vegas. Instead, I celebrated this anniversary with many of the Soloist Heather Klein British Jewish community, the 80th [email protected] anniversary of the Battle Of Cable Street. In Executive Committee 1936, a man called Oswald Mosley wanted Les Sherman, President to expand the reach of the British Union of [email protected] Ivan Lambert, 1st Vice President Happy Fascists. He had been to Italy, seen [email protected] Mussolini’s success and had decided to Marty Hagans, 2nd Vice President dress his British fascists in black shirts, [email protected] Anniversary! Ricki Greenspon Treasurer reminiscent of the Italian dictator’s minions. [email protected] Shel Kolner, Recording On October 4, 1936, the “Black Shirts” tried to march through the East End of Secretary [email protected] London, the Jewish neighborhood. The planned march had been preceded by months and years of anti-semitic abuse for local Jews, the fascists having been emboldened by Board of Trustees the success of their colleagues in Germany and Italy. Even though around 2-3,000 Isaac Cohen Stephanie Helms fascists turned out, there were around 20,000 anti-fascist demonstrators, Jews having Jack Kaufman been joined by local workers from many different religions and backgrounds. The Jay Kenyon anti-fascists built barricades in and around the East End on streets like Cable Street. Mordecai Labovitz Ilana Shapiro Where the Black Shirts tried to rush the Jews and their supporters, they were pushed Steve Weiner back by fists, clubs and even people throwing the contents of chamber pots from

Immediate Past President upper windows! Eventually the fascist march was abandoned, the anti-fascists’ slogan Julie Ann Littmann of “they shall not pass” having come to fruition.

Sisterhood Marge Nordell, President Why do I tell you this story? Partly, because of my Yom Kippur sermon this year [email protected] about “Passionate Pluralism”. In it, I explained that we usually engage those who disagree with us in the hope of fruitful dialogue. I have to say, though, the Jews of Men’s Club Les Gilbert, President London wear the history of the Battle of Cable Street like a badge of honor. With [email protected] fascists, with those who wish our disappearance and obliteration, you sometimes have to fight. The Black Shirts were not interested in dialogue and were responded to on Education Director Dr. Sharon Knafo that basis. The most important lesson, though, is that we still have to be on our guard [email protected] for fascists even if they do not helpfully wear black shirts to identify themselves.

Temple Staff Racism, prejudice and bigotry still rear their ugly heads around us. They should be Phil Scully, Executive Director given short shrift, in the name of the united heroes of Cable Street. [email protected]

Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein I cannot believe it is November. My time at Temple Sinai has flown by. Last year I remember arriving right as the High Holy Days were just about to start, and watching as we were able to accomplish so much so quickly.

This year, it has been so ful- filling to know what we had ac- complished last year, and to see our continued growth and love of the new music as I watch the faces of our congregants sing and pray.

As we move on to other events in the year, I am excited to announce that, through the support of the Jewish Federation and a Centennial Year grant from the National JCC, we will host the 2nd Annual Yiddish Las Vegas. I am looking for- ward to putting together a committee and even more com- munity involvement this year.

I also look forward to our continued collaboration with Can- tor Jessica Hutchings and Congregation Ner Tamid and their young adult group NextGen to create a Shabbat After Dark. Each month this young adult service for the under 40’s will rotate between our two synagogues. This month Shabbat After Dark will be back at Temple Sinai for Veteran’s Day weekend.

Speaking of collaborations, I am excited that our Junior Songbird Choir will continue popping up at Friday Night Live, and also will be singing in concerts with the JCC Valley Youth Choir, performing with them as a community. This will be a great chance for them to meet and perform with other children their age.

Lastly, as Sunday got into full swing after the High Holy Days, you may have heard a lot of the students calling me CS (Cantorial Soloist) Heather. This is one of the titles I prefer, as well as Soloist Heather or finally Heather. I will feel your “kavod” (respect) any way you say it.

Looking forward to December which will mean hot choco- late and sweaters, finally.

Warmly, CS Heather

Education Director Dr. Sharon Knafo

Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Student engagement is a chal- lenge for every educator, and the ability to engage tuned-out stu- dents is a developed skill even among seasoned teachers. Learning and growing these days involve more than just tradition- al instructional methods. Many teachers use collaborative re- search style, as different students research different aspects of a learned topic, and together, create a thorough and deep learning journey, where collab- oration among subject areas is encouraged during this pro- cess. Examples for this educational shift can be teaching topics such as Water Cycle, Thanksgiving, Family Tree, or Hanukkah, and these topics can be researched historically, expressed with fine art, portrayed mathematically, and more. The interdisciplinary teaching intrigues various learners to be engaged in the learning process, while shar- ing what they learned with their peers. Project and research based learning is encouraged at our schools (both the Reli- gious School and the Shenker Academy), and we strive to intertwine math, ELA, social studies and fine arts, to create a vibrant learning environment.

Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. Sharon Knafo Education Director

From Your Sisterhood We hope you all enjoyed your Holiday celebrations. The services at Temple Sinai were well attended and inspirational. Rabbi Cohen and Cantorial Soloist Heather Klein made the services so special. Our thanks to Les Gilbert for the terrific second day Rosh Hashanah services. With the assistance of the Rabbi and Heather, he did a masterful job of coordinating and organizing the service. The attendance was rewarding and those who attended truly enjoyed our first effort at second day services. We would also like to acknowledge Steve Weiner who brought this idea to our Temple Board and the thank the Board for their support.

Thank you to all those Sisterhood members who joined us for our "Paid Up Luncheon”. Approximately 75 women attended and had a lovely lunch and enjoyed a fun program. We need to thank all those who made this day possible: Eileen Bellsey-Levin, arranged for the food, the program, and made sure that our tables looked beautiful and coordinated the entire event. Thanks as well goes to Barbara Stallone, Nancy Pendelton and Karen Silber for serving our lunch, as well as to everyone who brought the delicious desserts.

On October 22nd Sisterhood provided gift bags to new Temple members at a lunch held at the Rabbi and his wife’s house. This is a new program that Sisterhood is attempting this year. If anyone would like to become a part of this committee, please let me know.

The Temple Holiday Bazaar will be held on November 20th and we would appreciate volunteers to man the table and help in the shop. This will be a great fundraiser for Sisterhood and a great opportunity to get to know other Sisterhood members better.

Our next Open Meeting will be on November 13th. Program information will be forthcoming.

We welcome all who are interested in becoming more involved with Sisterhood’s committees. We would love to hear from you. I am always available by email at [email protected] and usually in the gift shop on Fridays.

B’shalom
