For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Introduction Bollywood in Australia Andrew Hassam and Makand Paranjape The global context of Bollywood in Australia Makarand Paranjape The transcultural character and reach of Bollywood cinema has been gradually more visible and obvious over the last two decades. What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. Economic OVERVIEW GLOBAL ECONOMY Calendar Year 2015 (CY2015) has been challenging and difficult year for the global economy. Global growth is said to pick up after a number of weak years (global economic activity remained subdued in CY2015). Global growth, estimated at 3.1% in CY2015, is projected to improve to 3.4% in CY2016 and 3.7% in CY2017. The pick-up in global activity is projected to be more gradual, especially in the emerging markets and the developing economies. In its semi-annual World Economic Outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that the world economy is facing the threat of a synchronised slowdown and mounting risks including another bout of financial market turmoil, and a political backlash against globalisation. Worldwide, demand remained weak and the recent volatility in financial markets highlighted an uncertain international outlook, especially in China. “The emerging economies are slowing down, apart from India which is “doing pretty well”, Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund stated. The pace of global GDP growth remained slow, driven by a collusion of multiple factors such as volatility and rebalancing in the Chinese economy. A drop in oil and other commodity prices, slowdown in emerging economies, and slow pick-up in major developed economies also contributed to the slow growth.

    G R E E T I N G S F R O M T H E D E A N We began to compile a record of the achievements of Stony Brook's graduate Students in 1991 and have published an issue each academic year since then. This issue covers the 2001-2002 academic year. The accomplishments of Stony Brook’s graduate students are quite extraordinary. They include winning numerous, prestigious, national and international fellowships and research grants. Our students have also established an impressive presence in the literatures of their disciplines with publications in many of the best scholarly journals and books. They have achieved recognition in the creative arts with acclaimed exhibitions and performances. Stony Brook’s graduate students also won awards for their excellence as teachers. Our students participate fully in the intellectual activities of their field of scholarship by participation in conferences and workshops. Finally, graduates of Stony Brook’s programs leave us to take up a wide variety of professional appointments. Many of these are Post- Doctoral fellowships or faculty positions at some of the nation’s finest universities. In addition, Stony Brook’s graduates carry the knowledge and expertise that they gained here to many prestigious institutions overseas, thus enhancing Stony Brook’s international reputation as an outstanding research university. The success of Stony Brook’s graduate enterprise is rooted in the success of the faculty of the University in research, scholarship and creative activities. The international reputation of Stony Brook’s faculty attracts outstanding students to our graduate programs from across the country and around the world.
