Perlin, JD “Sanism,” an irrational prejudice against people with mental illness, is of the same quality and character as other irrational prejudices such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and ethnic bigotry that cause (and are reflected in) prevailing social attitudes [1, 2]. It infects both our jurisprudence and our lawyering practices. Sanism is largely invisible and largely socially acceptable. It is based predominantly upon stereotype, myth, superstition, and deindividualization and is sustained and perpetuated by our use of alleged “ordinary common sense” (OCS) and heuristic reasoning in irrational responses to events in both everyday life and the legal process [3, 4]. I have written extensively about the roots of the assumptions that are made by the legal system about persons with mental disabilities. These mistaken assumptions include: that people with mental illness are erratic, deviant, sexually uncontrollable, emotionally unstable, superstitious, lazy, and ignorant; that they demonstrate a primitive morality; they are invariably more dangerous than persons without mental illness, and such dangerousness is easily and accurately identified by experts; that for a person in treatment for mental illness to decline to take prescribed antipsychotic medication is an excellent predictor of (1) future dangerousness and (2) need for involuntary institutionalization; that people with mental illness should be segregated in large, distant institutions because their presence threatens the economic and social stability of residential communities; that they give in too easily to their basest instincts and do not exercise appropriate self-restraint [5]. -

INTRODUCTION Far too many—if not most—of us in the legal profession who belong to both the disability and LGBTQþ communities have known informally, through our own experi- ences and those of others like us, that workplace bias and discrimination on the basis of disability, sexuality, and gender identity is still widespread. The new study by Blanck et al. on diversity and inclusion in the U.S. legal profession provides empirical proof of this phenomenon, which might otherwise be dismissed as being based on anecdotal evidence.1 Its findings lend credibility to our position that the legal profession must make systemic changes to address workplace ableism, heterosexism, and transmisia.2 They also suggest †Committee for Public Counsel Services, Mental Health Litigation Division. CUNY has been fortunate to be a recipient of a grant from the FAR Fund to enhance the university’s capacity to support its growing population of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and to provide training and resources to faculty and staff about autism. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Shirlee Taylor, Executive Director of the FAR Fund for her endless support, confidence, and encouragement. Under the leadership of Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Inclusion Initiatives, Dr. Christopher Rosa, five pilot campuses were designated to develop best practices to share with the university and interested stakeholders. Our campus Project REACH directors, Dr. Kristen Gillespie of College of Staten Island, Valerie Stewart Lovell of Brooklyn College, Dr. Regina Varin-Mignano of LaGuardia Community College, Dr. Stella Woodroffe of Kingsborough Community College and Marcos Gonzalez of Borough of Manhattan Community College worked tirelessly to create and develop inclusive initiatives, mentor programming and universal design practices for faculty and staff. The key contestations have revolved around three issues: First, the question of who constitutes a woman; second, what constitute feminist interests; and third, how trans* politics intersects with feminist politics. Despite decades of debates and scholarship, these impasses remain unbroken. In this article, our aim is to work out a way through these impasses. We argue that all three types of contestations are deeply invested in notions of identity, and therefore dealt with in an identitarian way. This has not been constructive in resolving the antagonistic relationship between the trans* movement and feminism. We aim to disentangle the antagonism within anti-trans* feminist politics on the one hand, and trans* politics’ responses to that antagonism on the other. In so doing, we argue for a politics of status-based recognition (drawing on Fraser, 2000a, 2000b) instead of identity-based recognition, highlighting individuals’ specific needs in soci- ety rather than women’s common interests (drawing on Jónasdóttir, 1991), and conceptualising the intersections of the trans* movement and feminism as mutually shaping rather than as trans* as additive to the feminist project (drawing on Walby, 2007, and Walby, Armstrong, and Strid, 2012). -

Being an Ally for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People 1919 University Avenue West, Suite 400, St. Paul, MN 55104 Tel. 651-645-2948 or 888-NAMIHELPS www.namihelps.org Here are some guidelines for people wanting to be allies for LGBT people around them. In today’s world, LGBT issues are being discussed more than ever before…in the media, in community programs, in schools, churches, offices, in the streets, and in people’s homes. These discussions are often emotionally charged as this can be a threatening topic for many people, and clear information is often difficult to find. Being an ally is important, but it is challenging as well as exciting. This list is not exhaustive, but provides some starting points. Add your own ideas and suggestions! Don’t assume heterosexuality. We tend to assume that everyone we meet is heterosexual even though we know this is not true. Often people hide that they are LGBT until they know it is safe to “come out” in a given situation. Use neutral language when first working with students/clients/customers until you know for certain what the person prefers (for example, the gender of their significant other). Educate yourself about lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender issues. There are many resources, reading lists, and organizations available for information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Explore ways to creatively integrate LGBT issues in your work. Doing so can be a valuable process for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Integrating LGBT people and issues instead of separating them out as a “special topic” is an important strategy for conveying and creating respect and acceptance. -

Neurodiversity Studies
Neurodiversity Studies Building on work in feminist studies, queer studies, and critical race theory, this vol• ume challenges the universality of propositions about human nature, by questioning the boundaries between predominant neurotypes and ‘others’, including dyslexics, autistics, and ADHDers. This is the first work of its kind to bring cutting-edge research across disciplines to the concept of neurodiversity. It offers in-depth explorations of the themes of cure/ prevention/eugenics; neurodivergent wellbeing; cross-neurotype communication; neu• rodiversity at work; and challenging brain-bound cognition. It analyses the role of neuro-normativity in theorising agency, and a proposal for a new alliance between the Hearing Voices Movement and neurodiversity. In doing so, we contribute to a cultural imperative to redefine what it means to be human. To this end, we propose a new field of enquiry that finds ways to support the inclusion of neurodivergent perspectives in knowledge production, and which questions the theoretical and mythological assump• tions that produce the idea of the neurotypical. Working at the crossroads between sociology, critical psychology, medical humani• ties, critical disability studies, and critical autism studies, and sharing theoretical ground with critical race studies and critical queer studies, the proposed new field – neurodiversity studies – will be of interest to people working in all these areas. Hanna Bertilsdotter Rosqvist is an Associate Professor in Sociology and currently a Senior Lecturer in Social work at Södertörn University. Her recent research is around autism, identity politics, and sexual, gendered, and age normativity. She is the former Chief Editor of Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. The Special Rapporteur then focuses on means to eliminate religious intolerance and discrimination in the workplace, a theme which he thinks warrants more systematic attention. The sources of religious intolerance and discrimination in the workplace can be manifold and include prejudices existing among employers, employees or customers, restrictive interpretations of corporate identity or a general fear of religious diversity. After clarifying that the human right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief also relates to manifestations of religious diversity in the workplace, the Special Rapporteur particularly deals with measures of “reasonable accommodation” that may be needed to overcome discrimination. -

COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies 18.2 (2017) Scars for Life(s) Jessica Suzanne Stokes ABSTRACT: This essay considers the relationship between performance, disability, and the ephemera of wounding experiences by using bodily scars as method for multi-temporal and multi-spatial reflection. Thinking through the “Freak Show” season of the television series American Horror Story, this essay locates coalitional potential in scars as they offer sites from which to create new stories of the past. KEYWORDS: Disability; Scar; Performance; Culture Operation Ephemera Some people take first day of school pictures to document the passage of time. Instead, I have x-rays, photos of blue hairnets that barely cover my head, and more photos of my feet right after the cast is sawed away, right before the stitches or staples come out because the surgeries I had were my father’s surgeries, and my brother’s surgeries and… These photos don’t document time linearly. They aren’t displayed in an album in a particular order. They all sit in one shoe box. Each merges with the next: purple cast fragments, screws lodged in bone, staples in a row, beforeafter while afterbefore, white walls, blue hairnets, hospital blankets, IV drips, purple cast fragments.
