Community
Port Huron is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of St. Clair County. The population was 30,177 at the 2010 census. It is joined by the Blue Water Bridge over the St. Clair River to Sarnia, Ontario in Canada. The city lies at the southern end of Lake Huron and is the easternmost point on land in Michigan. The city also features a historic downtown area, boardwalk, marina, museum, lighthouse, and the McMorran Place arena and event center. The city was a recipient of the All-America City Award in 2005. Port Huron High School is located approximately 60 miles northeast of the city of Detroit and is one of two high schools within the school district.
School Port Huron High School is a comprehensive four-year public high school enrolling 1,393 students in grades 9–12. The original school graduated its first students in 1869. The current building was built in 1955. Port Huron High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools since 1905 and University of Michigan since 1892.
69% of graduates (2014) matriculate to post-secondary colleges and universities. The professional staff consists of 77 members with 80% holding advanced degrees. Our professional staff has received several “Outstanding Teacher” awards over the past several years and has been involved in continued curriculum development. Awards include Michigan Biology Teacher of the Year, History Teacher of the Year, Band Director of the year.
Port Huron High School has a multi-ethnic student population. Its student body consists of 76% Caucasian, 13 percent African-American, 6% Hispanic, 1% Asian, 2% Native American, and 3% Multi-racial. Curriculum
Minimum graduation requirements total 22 credits including the following: Mathematics – 4 credits - including Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, one math course in final year of high school. English Language Arts – 4 credits including ELA 9, ELA 10, ELA 11, ELA 12 – (AP Language and Compositon and AP Literature and Composition may be substituted for ELA 11 and or ELA 12). Science – 3 credits – including Biology, Physics or Chemistry, and one additional science course. Social Studies – 3 credits – including U.S. History & Geography, .5 credit in Economics, .5 credit in Civics, and World History & Geography. Physical Education and Health – 1 credit. Visual, Performing and Applied Arts – 1 credit. Online Learning Experience – Course, Learning or Integrated Learning Experience. Possible # of electives – 6 AP Capstone Diploma and Certificate: A new diploma program designed for college bound students. Nationally recognized by universities. Two additional classes – AP Seminar and AP Research. Both can be used to replace ELA: AP Seminar in Grades 10 or 11; AP Research in Grade 12. Students are not limited to the number of AP classes they may take. As a graduation requirement, all juniors must take the state assessments consisting of the Michigan Merit Exam. Port Huron High school operates on a semester system. Dual Enrollment at post-secondary institutions is an option for students to pursue in their junior or senior year. AP® courses are offered in American History, Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature & Composition, U.S. Government, Physics, Psychology, Computer Science, AP Seminar, Statistics, World History, and Studio Art. AP is an open-enrollment program. Area Vocational Programs (RESA – TEC) enable juniors and/or seniors to enroll in vocational related courses. Some programs allow students to earn college credits at local institutions of higher education.
Grading and Ranking

It is expected that a student will pass two of the three six-week marking periods and take any required final examinations in order to receive a passing grade for the semester. In questionable cases, the predominant grade during the six-week marking period will be the deciding factor. Variations from the suggested weighting should be brought to the principal's attention.
Class of 2020 Honors For the class of 2019 and all those after the graduation, honors will use the “laude” system: A three-tiered honor system with “cum laude,” “magna cum laude,” and “summa cum laude” designations is established for recognizing outstanding academic performance during high school.

Grade point average is computed by adding merit points (see above) and dividing by the number of credits attempted. College Board (AP) courses are given one additional merit point. Additional summa cum laude requirements include: 1 AP Class from each of the four disciplines, and 75th national percentile on the SAT.

Testing All students are required to take all testing portions of the MSTEP (SAT, Workkeys, and MSTEP components) as a graduation requirement. This typically takes place their junior year. Juniors also have an opportunity to enter the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMS) competition by taking the PSAT. Sophomores participate in PSAT10.
Freshmen participate in the PSAT8/9 test. This is an SAT precursor that gives predictive and student readiness information for the SAT.
All students electing to take AP courses are encouraged to take the year-end AP test for that subject that may qualify them for college credit. (There is a fee for these tests)

Rank in Class: Students are ranked in their class based on their unweighted GPA, with some students having a shared ranking.
GPA Calculation GPA is computed using the above quality points. Beginning with grade 9, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 22 credits is required for graduation. Grades are recorded on the transcript and grade point average is computed in January and May.

Extracurricular Activities Port Huron High School offers a wide array of opportunities for students to be involved. The school is a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association and offers competitive team sports for both male and female athletes.
