What is the levy you’re requesting and why? The district is asking for approval of a 1 % school district income tax on earned income only. The revenue this levy would generate is essential for the district’s Vote Yes—May 4 day-to-day operations. This money would not be used for any type of building projects in the district. It is part of a long-term solution to solve the district’s financial needs for years to come because it provides the schools an opportu- nity for inflationary growth in its revenue, something property taxes do not do. The new version of the tax exempts pensions, Social Security, in- terest, disability, and dividends. It would tax earned income only.

Why now? Families The district is facing a financial debt in less than 2 fiscal years. We are trying to solve this problem before it reaches crisis proportions. We have been good financial stewards, controlling costs as much as we can but the last cuts that were made had a significant impact on students and programs. It is important to make this transition to an income tax now because Take of the nature of how the income tax is collected. It would not begin to be levied until January 1, 2011 and doesn’t reach full collection to the district for 18 months (July, 2012). That is why the board cannot vote to rescind the property taxes prior to expiration on December 31, 2012. If the district does not pass this levy in this calendar year there will Action be additional reductions to teaching and support staff. Without additional revenue we will be plunged into a financial cri- sis that could mean state control and/or the state loan fund to maintain minimum standards of education. Promoting the What happens if this levy passes? The district will not renew the 2012 or 2014 tax levies. The current plan is to take both off the books at the end of calendar year 2012. City Schools Should voters reject this proposal in May and November, the board and administration will need to study other available options to elimi- nate this deficit which would include reducing educational programs Community for students and running additional income or property tax levies to erase projected deficits.
