It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45). -

This information represents what was known at the end of the 1994 field season. These maps may not represent the most recent information on distribution and range for these taxa but it does illustrate geographic distribution across the assessment area. For many of these species, this is the first time information has been compiled on this scale. For the continued viability of many of these taxa, it is imperative that we begin to manage for them across their range and across administrative boundaries. Of the 173 taxa analyzed, there are maps for 153 taxa. For those taxa that were not tracked by heritage programs, we were not able to generate range maps. Summary We managed to fit plenty of sites and lots of plants into our week in the “Orchid Capital of Europe”, visiting a good variety of plant-rich habitats ranging from breezy coastal salt marshes and limestone sea cliffs to typical Mediterranean stony hillsides, olive groves and shady woodlands. The orchids did not fail to delight, and we found a superb selection of species during the week. The non-orchid flora was equally attractive with showy displays of Narcissi, Wild Tulips, Anemones and Irises, and plenty of the usual Mediterranean species in all the areas we visited. We were fortunate in that most of the locations we looked at were almost deserted and we were able to explore beautiful woodlands and open glades with only bird-song and cow-bells to be heard. Butterflies were spotted at most of the sites we visited, and there were plenty of other interesting insects to be found as well. Although we spent most of our time looking down at the plants, we did manage to produce a very good bird list with some exciting coastal species seen, as well as the more usual Mediterranean birds of stony hillsides and dark forests. -

L. Peruzzi, N. G. Passalacqua & G. Cesca On the presence of Doronicum plantagineum (Asteraceae) in Italy Abstract Peruzzi, L., Passalacqua, N. G. & Cesca, G.: On the presence of Doronicum plantagineum (Asteraceae) in Italy. — Bocconea 21: 207-212. 2007. — ISSN 1120-4060. Doronicum plantagineum is confirmed as a member of the Italian flora. Former reports of this species, or of D. hungaricum, from the Sila Massif (C Calabria) have been verified and are all referred to D. plantagineum. In addition to its confirmed presence in Sila, this species occurs in several localities of N Calabria (Pollino Massif and Verbicaro-Orsomarso mountains). D. plan- tagineum is a W Mediterranean species. Its S Italian stands are separated by more than 1000 km from its main area of distribution, the nearest localities being in SE France and NE Algeria. The presence of D. plantagineum in S Italy is therefore of particular phytogeographical interest. A map showing all known Italian localities of this species is provided. Introduction In a recent systematic revision of Doronicum L. (Fernández 2003) the report in Italy of plants referred in the past to the W Mediterranean D. plantagineum L., or to its close Balkan relative D. hungaricum Rchb. f, is completely ignored. Tenore (1835-1838, 1842) first recorded such plants from Italy (C Calabria) on the basis of samples collected seven years before (Tenore 1835, as “D. pardalianches”), now regarding them as a new variety of D. plantagineum: D. plantagineum var. lobelii. Subsequently, Fiori (1927) synonimised D. plantagineum var. lobelii with D. hungaricum, an opinion shared by Sarfatti (1965) and Pignatti (1982), although Gentile & Martini (1974) and Gentile (1979) had already report- ed Calabrian plants as representing D. -

The taxonomic analysis of E. australis distinguishes two subspecies: E. australis subsp. australis and E. australis subsp. aragonensis. The statistical treatment confirms the differences between the subal- liances Ericenion aragonensis and Ericenion umbellatae. A synonymic survey of genera in the Senecioneae accepted for the purposes of the Euro+Med Project is presented, and new combinations that are required in the genera Adenostyles, Doronicum, Senecio and Tephroseris (including a new subspecies), as well as Xanthium in the Heliantheae, are validated. Five validations concerning Cardueae taxa, three in Centaurea, one in Psephellus, and one in Rhaponticum, are appended. A synopsis of accepted genera (including many exotic aliens) in nine minor tribes (Arctoteae, Calenduleae, Eupatorieae, Gundelieae, Helenieae, Heliantheae, Mutisieae, Plucheeae, Vernonieae) completes the generic survey of European and Mediterranean Compositae. Introduction A concise characterisation of the Euro+Med PlantBase Project, its main purposes and planned “products”, and of the rationale and prospects of the present Notulae series, can be found in the first instalment of the Notulae (Willdenowia 33: 37. 2003). Further information on the setup and structures of Euro+Med is displayed on the Internet (http://www.euromed.org.uk/). This paper concludes a series of similar notes dealing with the various Compositae tribes (No. 1-3 and 6-8 of these Notulae). Taken together, they present a generic survey of the Euro-Mediterranean representatives of this large family, which I boldly undertook to edit for the Euro+Med Checklist. -

Alien species in Norway – with the Norwegian Black List 2012 Alien species in Norway – with the Norwegian Black List 2012 presents an overview of ecological impact assessments of alien species which reproduce in Norwegian territories. The assessments are based upon a new and semi- quantitative set of criteria, where the species’ invasion potential and ecological effect are considered. The work has been carried out by 11 groups of experts who have treated ca. 2500 species. Impact assessments have been made for 1180 alien species which reproduce in Norwegian territories and for 134 species which might arrive in Norway with the aid of humans in the future – so called ‘door knockers’. A total of 106 species are categorised as having a severe impact, 111 species as having a high impact, 198 species as having a potentially high impact, 399 species as having a low impact, and 366 species as having no known impact in Norwegian nature. In addition, species inform- ation has been gathered for 1071 alien species which do not reproduce on the Norwegian mainland and territorial waters, and 69 non-reproducing alien species observed in Svalbard.
