NORWICH STARS RESULTS – 1962 Updated 24.12.2015 ORIGINAL NORWICH STARS RESULTS – 1962 Updated 24.12.2015 Bryan Tungate, 9 Hanover Gardens, Mulbarton, NR14 8DA, Norfolk The 1962 season was the year that Handicapping came into the National League. ORIGINAL HANDICAP ARRANGEMENTS All riders were to be split into 3 grades – Star “A”, Star “B” and all others. Star “A” became known as the Big 5, (Barry Briggs, Peter Craven, Ove Fundin, Bjorn Knutsson and Ronnie Moore). These riders gave 20yds start on small tracks and 30yds on large tracks. Star “B” was set for 15 riders who were handicapped on some tracks but not on others. These were Bob Andrews, Ron How, Ken McKinley, Peter Moore and Jack Young (all 10 yards on small tracks & 15 yards on large tracks), Billy Bales (15 yards on large tracks & Scratch on others), Gordon McGregor (15 yards on large tracks, 10 yards at Oxford & Scratch on others), Jack Biggs, Ray Cresp, Dick Fisher, Ronnie Genz, Jack Geran, Jack Kitchen, Ron Mountford and George White (10 or 15 yards on home tracks & Scratch on away tracks) All other riders were allowed to start at the gate on all tracks. (It really seemed fairly complicated at the time as I remember it) A “Handicap Committee” of 2 promoters and 2 riders were to review matters monthly. Under the Handicap system no times would be recorded and announced. Handicaps only applied to National League, National Trophy & K O Cup meetings. (THESE WERE THE “RULES” LISTED IN THE NORWICH PROGRAMME) 31 March – Firs Stadium – Open Meeting Norwich planned to open the season with the Malcolm Flood Memorial Trophy meeting and run it under the handicap system. A blinding SNOWSTORM put paid to that plan. 7 April – Firs Stadium – National League Norwich Stars 35 Coventry Bees 43 NORWICH Jimmy Gooch 2 0 1’ 3 6 1 Reg Trott 0 3 2 2 7 Ove Fundin (30) 3 2 2’ 1’ 1 • 75 Years History 11-15
Part 11: 1957- 58 SEASON The 1957/58 South African speedway league season turned out to be a two-horse-race between Pretoria Eagles and Durban Hornets, with the former eventually clinching the championship on race-points difference, after both finished with an identical record of five wins and one loss from their six official matches. The highlights were the two direct encounters between the Eagles and the Hornets, which both ended in a home win. On January 12, Durban won a thriller of a match by 51.5 points to 50.5 at their own Hoy Park circuit. Henry Long (14) and Roy Bowers (11) top scored for the Hornets, while Pretoria’s Swedish ace Olle Nygren recorded an 18 points maximum. Just three days later, on January 15, both teams met for the return match at Pretoria’s Speedway Stadium. This time the Eagles beat the Hornets in another close match, keeping the title chase still undecided. For the record and to give an idea of the line-up’s of that year’s top two teams. Here are the points score details of the Pretoria match: PRETORIA Eagles (52): Olle Nygren 18, Trevor Redmond 15, Howdy Cornell 8, Claude Warne 6, Jimmy Scott 3, Charlie Branders 2. DURBAN Hornets (49): Henry Long 13, Neil Mortimer 11, Roy Bowers 11, Gerry Hickson 5, Aubrey Long 4, Vern McWilliams 3, Graham White 2. By the end of February, all but one of the league matches had been completed and Pretoria sat on top of the league table. Durban Hornets, with one match in hand, needed to beat the East Rand Stars by a margin of 8 or more to put themselves on top, but only managed a tight 50-48 win against the men from Springs, which kept Hornets in second place to the Eagles in the league’s final standings.

It is also the first British speedway team that comes to mind for many of the great British public. And in 1982 the Belle Vue Aces came first in the British League too, 10 years afterthey last won this particular trophy and seven years since this famous Manchester club won any national ƐŝůǀĞƌǁĂƌĞ͘^ƵĐŚĂƌĞƐƵůƚĚŝĚŶ͛ƚůŽŽŬ on the cards early on as the Aces had a modest League Cup campaign, losing at home to Cradley Heath and managing just one win in their six away meetings on their way to third place in the Northern Section. That loss prompted something of a wobble though as they immediately went down at Wimbledon and lost at Leicester and at home to Ipswich a couple of weeks later. They also lost heavily at Sheffield before July had finished, albeit after home and away victories over Eastbourne. At the end of July Belle Vue were in a three-way tie at the top of the league but, significantly, they had ůŽƐƚĨŝǀĞƚŝŵĞƐƚŽƌĂĚůĞLJ,ĞĂƚŚ͛ƐŽne defeat.
