NORWICH STARS RESULTS – 1962 Updated 24.12.2015 Bryan Tungate, 9 Hanover Gardens, Mulbarton, NR14 8DA, Norfolk The 1962 season was the year that Handicapping came into the National League. ORIGINAL HANDICAP ARRANGEMENTS All riders were to be split into 3 grades – Star “A”, Star “B” and all others. Star “A” became known as the Big 5, (Barry Briggs, Peter Craven, Ove Fundin, Bjorn Knutsson and Ronnie Moore). These riders gave 20yds start on small tracks and 30yds on large tracks. Star “B” was set for 15 riders who were handicapped on some tracks but not on others. These were Bob Andrews, Ron How, Ken McKinley, Peter Moore and Jack Young (all 10 yards on small tracks & 15 yards on large tracks), Billy Bales (15 yards on large tracks & Scratch on others), Gordon McGregor (15 yards on large tracks, 10 yards at Oxford & Scratch on others), Jack Biggs, Ray Cresp, Dick Fisher, Ronnie Genz, Jack Geran, Jack Kitchen, Ron Mountford and George White (10 or 15 yards on home tracks & Scratch on away tracks) All other riders were allowed to start at the gate on all tracks. (It really seemed fairly complicated at the time as I remember it) A “Handicap Committee” of 2 promoters and 2 riders were to review matters monthly. Under the Handicap system no times would be recorded and announced. Handicaps only applied to National League, National Trophy & K O Cup meetings. (THESE WERE THE “RULES” LISTED IN THE NORWICH PROGRAMME) 31 March – Firs Stadium – Open Meeting Norwich planned to open the season with the Malcolm Flood Memorial Trophy meeting and run it under the handicap system.
