URBAN COMPASS Guiding Youth Toward a Hopeful Future MISSION

The mission of Urban Compass is to provide a safe, welcoming, and innovative environment that challenges our youth to envision and navigate a course for a rewarding future characterized by achievement, independent thought, and social responsibility through education, mentoring, and play. Urban Compass guides youth toward a hopeful future! URBAN COMPASS Guiding Youth Toward a Hopeful Future

Dear Friends,

It is with great pride that we present the Urban Compass Annual Report for the 2018 Academic Year. This has been an exciting year of growth and change for the organization, with the addition of new Interim Executive Directors (that's us), and nearly doubling our program enrollment with the implementation of two major initiatives: a second program site in Pico- Union and a middle school program in Watts. Throughout this expansion period, our core mission has remained intact, "we guide youth toward a hopeful future!"

With a combined service to Urban Compass spanning two decades and professional backgrounds in finance and education, we are well-suited to lead the organization through this critical period of development. Michelle Alfonso, a CPA by trade, will focus on strategic and financial planning, while Kathy Walton will be evaluating the programming and staffing models to ensure the most effective use of our limited resources. Our goal is to develop the foundation and infrastructure necessary to support Urban Compass's continued growth trajectory.

We are grateful for the financial and in-kind contributions from our donors, community partners and dedicated volunteers. Thank you for your on- going support of UC families.

With deepest appreciation,

Michelle Alfonso Kathy Walton Interim Executive Director, Finance Interim Executive Director, Programming ORGANIZATION HISTORY

Established in 2004, Urban Compass (“UC”) was designed to address the negative outcomes and academic challenges experienced by children in Watts and South . UC created a continuum of academic, enrichment and support services that keeps children out of gangs and on a path to college, giving children every opportunity to succeed. The long-term support model provided by Urban Compass gives youth the tools to navigate their own future, for a lifetime of success.

For fourteen years, the core of Urban Compass’s model has been an after-school academic and social enrichment program that started by serving children in Kindergarten through 5th grade at 112th Street Elementary School. A crucial reason for our success is a model built on community partners, including a volunteer workforce of over 400 high school and college volunteers, who play a vital role in creating our college- going culture and inspiring our kids dream of high school graduation and college success. Despite the long history of abandonment by social service providers in Watts, Urban Compass gained traction through a deep and relentless commitment to the needs of the community.

Building on our success in Watts, Urban Compass recently expanded to a second service location at St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School in Pico-Union. Launched in Fall 2017, this intensely underserved community is well-suited for the Urban Compass model, which greatly benefits from the support of high school volunteers from Loyola High School and Bishop Conaty High School, located a few blocks from St. Thomas. We have quickly gained the trust of the children and families and look forward to building on our work as a connector and collaborator to continue bringing resources to this community.

We are proud to announce our newest program, Urban Compass College & Career Pathways for middle school students in Watts, made possible by a generous grant from Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Downey. Launching in Summer 2018, our students meet two Saturdays per month to participate in sessions at Verbum Dei High School which focus on leadership, life skills, college planning, and career exploration. There are no other programs of this type currently available for middle school students across schools, we want to be first to reach out and support these students in a caring and impactful way. STUDENT IMPACT

Devin, 4th Grade Student Devin is a bright and charismatic 4th grader who has been with Urban Compass since kindergarten. Last year, Devin struggled with finding his place at Urban Compass due to negative community influences. However, with the start of the new school year, Devin bounced back, committed himself to success, and quickly became a leader in his class and a role model for his classmates. He looks forward to coming to program everyday, and always makes sure his younger brother, De’Onta, is following the rules and has a smile on his face.

Daniel, Kindergarten Student In the beginning of the school year, Daniel struggled to stay awake during our program. He was non-verbal with staff and other students, but he slowly opened up. Program Manager, Brittany Burnett recalls, "I can remember the first day I heard him say my name. I was shocked and excited!” Daniel received several monthly Perfect Attendance awards from Urban Compass, and would proudly race to his mom after program to hand her his certificate and prize. His first report card grades also improved over the course of the year, starting from 1's and 2's, Daniel progressed with his final report card on grade-level with 3's.
