Alison Wilma Thomson Kennedy ALISON WILMA THOMSON KENNEDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY JOHN KENRICK AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF UNITARIAN THOUGHT Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING 2006. ABSTRACT This thesis is a study in the history of ideas which discusses the work and thought of the Unitarian biblical critic, classical historian and philologist John Kenrick (1788-1877). It examines evidence to suggest that during his productive life Kenrick made an intellectual transition from the ideas of the radical English Enlightenment to the more Romantic perspectives of the nineteenth century. The first part of the discussion as a whole is concerned largely with the nature of the context from which Kenrick emerged as a thinker while the second is related to Kenrick’s own changing ideas. Chapter two reveals the monist philosophical and theological tendencies which supported the Socinian beliefs of the polymath Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), who was the dominant influence on Unitarians in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This discussion of Priestley’s thought, which is brought into relief by means of a comparison with that of the moral and political philosopher Richard Price (1723-1791), has two objectives, the first to reveal something of the context of Unitarianism of the time and the second to establish a foundation from which the nature and extent of later intellectual change may be measured. Chapter three concentrates on another aspect of the Unitarian context closely connected to Socinian beliefs, and that is the tradition of historical biblical criticism which contained the seeds of a new historical consciousness. The fourth i chapter is an analysis of the relationship between these radical Unitarian biblical critics and scholars in Germany and discusses some similarities and differences between the two sets of thinkers. Chapter five focuses upon John Kenrick himself and the integration of his Unitarian historical biblical ideas with elements of German thought on the interpretation of classical myth. It points out the implications for his own ideas in terms of the development of Romanticism and cultural relativism. Chapter six is concerned with Kenrick’s historical approach to language and shows how it may be compared with the ideas of the German philologists of the time. The seventh chapter is an account of Kenrick’s opinions on the truth of Genesis and the origins of man. It considers in what ways the uneasy relationship between theology and the science of the mid-nineteenth century helped to bring about changes in his thought which linked it to a transformed Unitarianism and also to the intellectual milieu of the later nineteenth century. Chapter eight concludes the thesis with an assessment of the nature and extent of the changes which had taken place since the domination of the ideas of Joseph Priestley. The thesis offers a study of the transition in thought of an eminent scholar whose work has never been examined before. It opens up some new perspectives with regard to the linkages between the radical English Enlightenment and the historical consciousness and Romanticism of the nineteenth century. ii PREFACE The proposal that I should embark on a thesis related to the history of ideas was made on the completion of my undergraduate degree as a mature student at the University of Stirling. I had written my final-year dissertation on the work of the late nineteenth-century idealist philosopher Thomas Hill Green (1836-1882) and decided that I should like to take on the challenge of another topic in the same field. It was suggested that the subject of Unitarianism in the late eighteen and early nineteenth centuries might prove a fruitful area in which to pin down a topic for research. The idea was to find a way to compare aspects of Unitarianism’s earlier dry rationalism to the more Romantic ideas of its later adherents. After many months of study in the fields of philosophy and theology and more than a few ‘dead ends’, I decided to look closely at the work of the Unitarian historian and philologist John Kenrick (1788-1877) in the hope that I might find evidence of an intellectual transition. The following thesis is the result of that research, the early period of which was assisted by a grant from the Carnegie Trust. Without the patience, encouragement and enthusiasm of my supervisor, Professor David Bebbington, this thesis would never have been completed. Professor Bebbington has been generous with his superior skills and profound insight into a complex topic and he must have despaired many times of my iii wandering thoughts and the various intellectual cul de sacs in which I found myself. He has also shown me great kindness during difficult times, when my husband’s illnesses threatened to make me despair of ever reaching a conclusion to my research and writing. The debt I owe to him is one which may be expressed in the simplest of ways. Quite frankly, I am absolutely certain beyond any doubt that without his kindness, understanding and encouragement, I would never have made it. His keen eye having scrutinised this text on many occasions it only remains for me to say that any errors it contains are entirely my own. I also owe a great deal to others in the academic world, most notably my good friend Dr Martin Fitzpatrick in Aberystwyth, whose unfailing support, advice, sense of humour and generous book-lending have contributed so much to the end result here. Dr Fitzpatrick’s former co-editor on the journal Enlightenment and Dissent, Dr D.O. Thomas, was also one of the ‘great and good’ in that wonderful Welsh town. Sadly, Dr Thomas, or ‘D.O.’ as he was fondly known, died last year. Despite her bereavement, his widow Beryl Thomas was kind enough to help me with her transcription of a portion of John Kenrick’s shorthand, which appears in the Appendix to the thesis. I should like to express my gratitude to Beryl for her willingness to help at such a difficult time and also for all her hard work. I am also indebted to Dr David Wykes, Director of Dr Williams’s Library in London, who has also been a valuable source of encouragement over the years. He has shown great interest in this thesis and single-handedly persuaded the library trustees to allow part of the Kenrick Papers collection to be transported to iv the care of Stirling University Library for a large part of the research period. This, I believe, was the very first time in the library’s history that permission had been given to allow manuscripts to leave the premises in Gordon Square. I am very grateful to Dr Wykes and the trustees for this privilege. Not only that, but at Dr Williams’s Library I was permitted to record a great deal of manuscript material relating to John Kenrick on digital camera. As I live far from London, this was of enormous assistance in the compilation of the thesis. I am aware that in this too I was greatly privileged, for I believe the use of new technology in this way was also a ‘first’ for Dr Williams’s. For much assistance and information on the foreign publications of works of Joseph Priestley I am indebted to John Stephens, of Waterfields antiquarian bookshop in Oxford. John, sadly, died earlier this year, but I am sure that his enthusiasm, generosity of spirit and encouraging ways live on in all who knew him. My thanks must go also to Andrew Hill of the Unitarian Historical Society, who was generous with his advice, bibliographies and his book lending. I am grateful also to Sue Killoran and Joyce Meakin at the library of Harris Manchester College in Oxford. These two wonderful ladies I shall remember with great fondness, for their amazing expertise in librarianship is matched only by their sense of humour! I should also like to mention the kindness of Ian Flett and his colleagues at Dundee Archives. They have the distinction of keeping the northernmost copies of the First Series of the Monthly Repository (1806-1826), to which I was allowed unlimited access, thus eliminating the need for many trips to Manchester. v To Mrs Anne Kenrick, of Edgbaston, Birmingham, I am grateful for a peek at the family papers, which revealed some interesting facts about the life of an older John Kenrick, circa 1850. Despite suffering a terminal illness, Mrs Kenrick’s husband, Hugh Kenrick, was insistent that I visit their home to see the papers. I shall always remember his brave demeanour, sense of humour and his interest in the thesis. My thanks must also go to my friends and neighbours who have been staunch and supportive throughout all the tribulations of the last few years. James Martineau played an essential role in creating the first Unitarian seminary in the UK, then known as the Manchester New College. Martineau was born in Norwich on 21 April 1805, the descendant of Huguenot refugees who had fled from persecution in France a century earlier. His father, Thomas, was a manufacturer of exotic fabrics and the family attended an English Presbyterian church. (They were Rational Dissenters but could not legally call themselves Unitarians before 1813.) James was educated at Norwich Grammar School and later at Dr. Lant Carpenter‘s boarding school in Bristol, from which he graduated in 1821. He was then apprenticed to a civil engineer in Derby but he was prompted to become a minister by the death of Rev. Henry Turner (son of William). He entered Manchester College in York in 1822 and was instructed by Charles Wellbeloved (the principal), John Kenrick and William Turner. He graduated with high honours in 1825 after an oration entitled ‗The Necessity of Cultivating the Imagination as a Regulator of the Devotional Feelings‘. Martineau taught for a year at Carpenter‘s school and then became co-pastor at the Eustace Street Chapel in Dublin in 1828.

In the nineteenth century it was in the forefront of the intellectual life of the city, and established an important museum in its own premises in Park Row. The museum collection became the foundation of today’s City Museum when in 1921 the Society transferred the building and its contents to the Corporation of Leeds, at the same time reconstituting itself as a charitable limited company, a status it still enjoys today. Following bomb damage to the Park Row building in the Second World War, both Museum and Society moved to the City Museum building on The Headrow, where the Society continued to have its offices until the museum closed in 1998. The new Leeds City Museum, which opened in 2008, is now once again the home of the Society’s office. In 1936 the Society donated its library to the Brotherton Library of the University of Leeds, where it is available for consultation. Its archives are also housed there. The official charitable purpose of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society is (as newly defined in 1997) “To promote the advancement of science, literature and the arts in the City of Leeds and elsewhere, and to hold, give or provide for meetings, lectures, classes, and entertainments of a scientific, literary or artistic nature”.

Examining Gaskell in the context of Victorian philanthropy, I will argue that this is a relationship of far greater complexity than has previously been perceived. Gaskell’s Unitarian faith will be of particular relevance as different denominations often had unique approaches to philanthropy, and I will begin by examining Gaskell’s participation with philanthropy organised by her congregation, taking the charity bazaar as my example of this. Examining Gaskell’s three social problem novels in chronological order I will demonstrate that Gaskell rejects these forms of organised Victorian philanthropy, referred to as ‘associated philanthropy,’ in favour of developing her own vision of philanthropy in her novels. I will examine how Gaskell’s participation with ‘associated philanthropy,’ and the individual pursuit of her own philanthropic interests, shapes the development of her philanthropic vision in her fiction.

A more orthodox hymnic formulation of the doctrine of the Trinity would be difficult to find than one like this from the pen of the Father of English hymnody, Isaac Watts (1674–1748). Indeed, many of Watts’s hymns contain such Trinitarian language affirming the equal deity and praiseworthiness of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And yet, despite this legacy of rich, Trinitarian hymnody, Isaac Watts’s reputa- tion has been plagued since his lifetime with charges that he was less than orthodox in his doctrine of the Trinity. The purpose of this paper is to investigate thoroughly Watts’s mature thought concerning the Trinity to determine the purposes behind his thinking, and to assess whether any unorthodox views have been passed on through his most influential works—his hymns. Several of Watts’s biographers treat the subject at length, many without the benefit of all of the pertinent documents at their disposal.2 Other hymn textbooks or biographers of Watts either briefly mention his Trinitarian problems without any evidence,3 or they dismiss the charges without giving them the attention they deserve, mainly by cit- ing examples of his Trinitarian hymns written and published early in his life, before debates about the Trinity grabbed Watts’s attention.4 Watts 1Dr. Aniol is Associate Professor of Worship Ministry at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, and is the director of Religious Affections Ministries (www.religiousaffections.org).

Latin had continued in use in Western Europe long after the fall of the Roman empire as the lingua franca of the educated classes and of law, diplomacy, religion and university teaching. The flight of Greek scholars to the West after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 gave impetus to the study of ancient Greek literature and the Greek New Testament. Eventually, just as nineteenth-century reforms of university curricula were beginning to erode this ascendancy, developments in textual criticism and linguistic analysis, and new ways of studying ancient societies, especially archaeology, led to renewed enthusiasm for the Classics. The Classical Museum Born near Aachen, Leonhard Schmitz (1807–90) studied at the University of Bonn, from which he received his PhD, before marrying an Englishwoman and becoming a naturalised British citizen. Made famous by the 1844 publication of his translation of Niebuhr’s Lectures on the History of Rome, he became rector of the Royal High School, Edinburgh, where he taught Alexander Graham Bell. He also briefly tutored the future Edward VII (and he had previously taught Prince Albert in Bonn).

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities.     Musical Networks in Early Victorian Manchester R M Johnson PhD 2020 Musical Networks in Early Victorian Manchester RACHEL MARGARET JOHNSON A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Awarded for a Collaborative Programme of Research at the Royal Northern College of Music by Manchester Metropolitan University 2020 Abstract My dissertation demonstrates how a new and distinctive musical culture developed in the industrialising society of early Victorian Manchester. It challenges a number of existing narratives relating to the history of music in nineteenth-century Britain, and has implications for the way we understand the place of music in other industrial societies and cities. The project is located at the nexus between musicology, cultural history and social history, and draws upon ideas current in urban studies, ethnomusicology and anthropology. Contrary to the oft-repeated claim that it was Charles Hallé who ‘brought music to Manchester’ when he arrived in 1848, my archival research reveals a vast quantity and variety of music-making and consumption in Manchester in the 1830s and 1840s. The interconnectedness of the many strands of this musical culture is inescapable, and it results in my adoption of ‘networks’ as an organising principle. Tracing how the networks were formed, developed and intertwined reveals just how embedded music was in the region’s social and civic life. Ultimately, music emerges as an agent of particular power in the negotiation and transformation of the concerns inherent within the new industrial city. The dissertation is structured as a series of interconnected case studies, exploring areas as diverse as the music profession, glee and catch clubs, the Hargreaves Choral Society’s programme notes, Mechanics’ Institutions and the early Victorian public music lecture.
