We assessed species richness, abundance, and the diversity of wild bees in wastelands that difered in area (2–35 ha), stage of ecological succession, location (suburbs or closer to the city centre), and history of land use. In the investigated plots, we recorded 42% of all bee species reported from Poland. The attractiveness of wastelands was positively correlated with the coverage of blooming herbs, coverage of shrubs and low trees, and the area of the wasteland. An increase in isolation of the habitat patches, the percentage contribution of alien species, annuals, and low grasses (< 25 cm) nega- tively afected the diversity of Apiformes. Considering the history of land use, we found that the bees were most attracted to wastelands resulting from extractive industry (sand and clay pits), and grassy habitats located in the suburbs, e.g. at sites grazed earlier by sheep. Wastelands in areas directly infuenced by the chemical industry were the least attractive to bees. Analyses of quantitative and qualitative similarity of bees in various habitat types showed that three habitat types were the most similar to grasslands in the suburbs (the least disturbed habitats): degraded grasslands located closer to the city centre, extraction pits, and old felds. -

Aculeate Conservation Group/ Hymettus Report for 2006 1. Background to 2006 Research. 1.1 During 2006 a new body, Hymettus Ltd., was constituted. Hymettus will take over and extend the role of the Aculeate Conservation Group. This report deals with research originally agreed at the 2005 ACG Annual Review and funded by English Nature (now also re-incarnated as Natural England), but executed under Hymettus Ltd.. During 2006 work was financially supported by English Nature, Earthwatch, Syngenta and the RSPB in accordance with the relevant Annex a documents, which see for details. 1.2 2005 Projects are reported in the following order of taxonomic group: ants, wasps, bees, other projects. 2. Ant Projects. 2.1 Formica exsecta 2.1.1 At the 2005 Review meeting Stephen Caroll was asked to enquire of the Devon Trust as to whether they would be prepared to consider looking at the possibility of proposing a landscape project for the Bovey Basin which would include the habitat requirements of Formica exsecta and , if so, whether a contribution from the ACG towards the costs of looking at this would be appropriate. 2.1.2 The Trust received this request enthusiastically and have submitted a copy of Andrew Taylor’s (their Officer) Report. Stephen Caroll will be able to bring us up to date with developments at the Review meting. Journal of Hymenoptera Research 52: 1–36. doi: 10.3897/jhr.52.10441 Abstract Osmia pilicornis is distributed from western temperate Europe to western Siberia, where it exclusively occurs in open-structured, mesophilous and mainly deciduous woodland below 1000 m a.s.l. In Central Europe, its peak activity ranges from the last third of March to the first third of June. Due to its rarity and its low population densities over most of its range, the biology of O. pilicornis was only fragmentarily known. The discovery of six nests in the course of the present study revealed that females of O. pilicornis have a unique nesting behaviour among the osmiine bees: they gnaw their nests in dead wood with the aid of their strong mandibles, which have a peculiar chisel-like shape hypothesized to be an adaptation to the species’ specialized nesting behaviour. -

Apidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) Apidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) Fritz GUSENLEITNER, Max SCHWARZ & Karl MAZZUCCO Summary: Currently 690 species of Apidae (six subfamilies) are recorded from Austria. Zusammenfassung: Aus Österreich sind derzeit 690 Arten von Bienen (Apidae) aus sechs Unterfamilien bekannt. Key words: Hymenoptera, Apidae, Austria, checklist, biodiversity. 9 F. Gusenleitner, M. Schwarz & K. Mazzucco I Einleitung Bienen gehören zu den Hautfl üglern (Hymenoptera), der artenreichsten Insektenordnung Europas. Allein aus Mitteleuropa sind ca. 11.500 Arten bekannt, mit mindestens 12.000 ist jedoch zu rechnen, da laufend neue Arten gefunden bzw. beschrieben werden. Die Hymenoptera unterteilt man in Symphyta (Pfl anzenwespen) und Apocrita (Taillenwespen), letztere wiederum in Terebrantia (Schlupfwespen und Verwandte) und Aculeata (Stechimmen). Zu den Aculeaten zählen neben den Bienen Grab-, Weg-, Falten– und Goldwespen etc. sowie die Ameisen. Viele Aculeaten, so auch die Bienen, betreiben Brutvor– oder -fürsorge, manche sind Brutparasiten. Im Gegensatz zu allen anderen Aculeaten (Ausnahme Masarinae, Honigwespen, mit ei- ner Art in Österreich) ernähren Bienen jedoch ihren Nachwuchs mit Pollen, manch- mal ergänzt durch Nektar (bzw. Honig). Nach MICHENER 2007 sind weltweit 17.533 Bienenarten aus 443 Gattungen be- kannt. Da ständig weitere Arten beschrieben werden, ist jedoch eher von mindestens 20.000 Spezies auszugehen. In Österreich leben nach heutigem Stand 690 Arten in 48 Gattungen, aufgeteilt auf 6 Unterfamilien. Damit weist das Land die höch- ste Bienen-Biodiversität aller mitteleuropäischen Staaten auf. Allein im Bundesland Niederösterreich wurden mehr Bienenarten verzeichnet als in ganz Deutschland, in Polen, in der Schweiz oder in Ungarn. Grund dafür ist das Zusammentreffen von zwei großen europäischen Klimazonen in diesem Raum, nämlich dem ozeanisch getönten westeuropäischen und dem pannonischen Klima. -
