Unknown author Abstract Abstract This thesis presents a study about a data warehouse architecture model for the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Mozambique. The study combines two areas: health care and information systems areas. It was conducted using two research methodologies: system development and case study of the Ministry of Health. The model aims at integrating data from different sources in the Ministry of Health. The fieldwork was carried out in the southern area of Mozambique, in the Ministry of Health in Maputo province and in two districts of Gaza province: Manjacaze and Chibuto. The choice of these sites for the fieldwork was based on the implementation of the District Health Information System project. This research is a contribution to the current process of data and information integration in the Ministry of Health. Integration of information and data warehouse (DW) technology are tools that offer resources to obtain managerial information needed to establish control over management process. Data warehousing aims at providing, managing and exploiting a set of integrated data for decision support within an organization. The research methods applied to this study include interviews, observations, questionnaires, document analysis and analysis of existing systems. During the development of the model I applied part of the data warehouse life cycle. Taking into account the system development phases, I covered the first three phases of the data warehouse life cycle, in order to document the existing legacy systems, to create a model of data warehouse and to clean the data. As a result, I present a data warehouse architecture model for the Ministry of Health. The proposed model integrates different heterogeneous systems and provides integrated information for health workers (administrative personnel and managers). i Abstract The empirical findings proved that for the data warehouse project the Ministry of Health will need to put more effort on the data quality control, because the quality of data influence the decision-making process. It analyzes the contextual situation regarding the accuracy and reliability of the traditional prediction methods under the current weather and conditions of climate uncertainty and variabil- ity, and the opportunities that their prediction methods can bring to reduce their current and future exposure and vulnerabilities to drought. Farmers use a total of 11 traditional environmental indicators to predict drought, either individually or combined, as required to increase their prediction certainty. However, the farmers perceive that current unpre- dictability, variability, and changes in weather and climate have negatively afected the interpretation, accuracy, and reliability of most of their prediction indicators, and thus their farming activities and their ability to predict and respond to drought. This, associated with the reduced number of elders in the community, is causing a decline in the diver- sity, and complexity of interpretation of indicators. Nonetheless, these difculties have not impeded farmers from continuing to use their preferred prediction methods, as on some occasions they continue to be useful for their farming-related decisions and are also the main, or sometimes only, source of forecast. Considering the role these methods play in farmers’ activities, and the limited access to meteorological forecasts in most rural areas of Mozambique, and the fact that the weather and climate is expected to continually change, this paper concludes that it is important to enhance the use of traditional prediction meth- ods.

    Famine Early Warning Systems Network 21 January 2004 Highlights o Rainfall has been well below normal in much of central and southern Mozambique this season, raising fears of a third consecutive drought year. o In addition, temperatures have been above normal, increasing evaporation rates and reducing soil moisture. o A district-by-district rainfall analysis shows that rainfall totals in much of central and southern region are below 50% of normal for the period. Eastern Inhambane and Gaza Provinces are the worst affected areas with shortfalls ranging from 17 to 29% of normal. In meteorological terms, less than 75% of normal rain over an extended period is considered a drought. More than half of the country meets this definition at present. The effects on agriculture depend on when crops were planted and how much longer the rains continue. o The poor rainfall has already affected agriculture in most of the southern region, where rains start earlier. The first planting has failed in much of the southern region, and households had to replant at least once. The amount of rainfall in January and February will determine whether these second and third plantings will succeed. o In the provinces of Manica, Sofala, and Tete crops are showing signs of marked stress, but because the season starts later and lasts longer in these areas, most plants could recover if substantial rainfall occurs in January and February. Some rains are forecast for mid-January in the central regions. o River and dam levels in areas south of the Save River are below both last year (a drought year) and the longer-term average.

This study was conducted with the aim to assess the uptake of IPTp and ITNs in pregnant women attending ANC services and correlate with ANC attendance and frequency of stock-outs in 22 health facilities Mozambique. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between July and December 2011 in 22 health units in 11 districts situated in 11 provinces in Mozambique. Two health facilities were selected per district (one urban and one rural). Data were collected by reviewing logbooks of antenatal consultations as well as from monthly district reports. Results: During the period under investigation, a total of 23,524 pregnant women attended their 1st antenatal care visits, of which 12,775 (54.3%) and 7581 (32.2%) received one and two doses of IPTp, respectively. In regard to ITNs, a total of 16,436 (69.9%) pregnant women received ITNs. Uptake of IPTp and ITNs by pregnant women at ANC services was higher in southern Mozambique and lower in districts situated in the northern part of the country.

    Activity Report Prolinnova–Mozambique for 2015 Introduction In 2015, as in the previous 2–3 years, Prolinnova–Mozambique did not have many activities because of limited funds available to the regular network cooperation partners, including ADCR, the non- governmental organisation (NGO) that hosts the network. The most relevant activity in this year was the presentation of local innovations through exchange visits and experience sharing among farmers from different areas in Gaza and Maputo Provinces. The farmer associations that are part of the Prolinnova–Mozambique network are located mainly in these two regions. As mentioned in earlier reports from Prolinnova–Mozambique, the Catalonian NGO CIC-batá has been supporting the farmers in the southern provinces of Gaza and Maputo as part of their efforts to achieve long-term food security and sovereignty in this region. The NGO identified synergies in the activities of Prolinnova–Mozambique, which are centred in recognising and promoting local innovation. This served as an entry point for CIC-batá in its work towards sustainable development in the rural communities. As has been done in previous years, the Catalonian NGO again decided to support some local NGOs, members of Prolinnova–Mozambique, through its programme: “Contributing to achieve food security and sovereignty in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza in Mozambique”. The support was in the form of funding for a variety of activities, among them the presentation of promising local innovations that the Prolinnova–Mozambique network has identified in the past years. Priority was given to achieving increased agricultural production and productivity, environmental protection, soil conservation and pest control as well as post-harvest conservation of products.
