The Hurunui Garden Festival, now in its second year offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience many of the finest private gardens in Hurunui. After a highly successful launch last year, the Garden Festival is set to become Hurunui's annual Premier, Flagship Event. You will also be delighted by new and innovative attractions and activities in several of the gardens, designed to enhance the enjoyment of your visit. This Festival is a credit to the dedicated and inspirational organising committee and to our dedicated Garden Owners. I trust that you will enjoy this year's Garden Festival, as much as Jean and I enjoyed last year's inaugural Event, and that you will find the experience of exploring our districts garden relaxing, rewarding, and inspiring.

6 GUEST SPEAKERS Wolfgang Bopp + Dr Janet Cubey
Wolfgang Bopp was born in Germany where he did an apprenticeship in horticulture, followed by local conservation work maintaining and creating native habitats. He went to the UK to improve his English for 4 months and was still there 27 years later. He completed the Botanic Garden Diploma course at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and then spent time with the World Conservation Monitoring Centre Cambridge helping with the World List of Threatened Trees book. He was assistant curator at Ness Botanic Gardens, the first curator at the National Botanic Garden of Wales and then spent 14 years as curator and director at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. Since September 2018 Wolfgang has been director of the Botanic Gardens and Garden Parks in Christchurch.
Dr Janet Cubey was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and developed her love of plants while studying butterflies as a child. She completed the Diploma Course at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. This garden is famous for its extensive rhododendron collection and inspired Janet to do a PhD at Ness Botanic Gardens. She then became a botanist with the Royal Horticultural Society based at Wisley. During her 20 years with the RHS she's run the plant identification service, and worked internationally with cultivar registration and the cultivated plant code. Janet is Editor-in-Chief of the RHS Plant Finder, a role she continues to do from New Zealand.

Sheltered serenity A reliable supply of water from gravity-fed springs has made the garden at Lindfield flourish. The constant flow of water has enabled a large pond to be a feature of the garden, sheltered from North Canterbury's nor'west winds by pine shelterbelts. With the problems of water and shelter resolved the garden was developed in keeping with the meless elegance of the 1916 homestead and has a reassuring serenity. You can imagine the decades of family gatherings, games on the lawn, and drinks on the veranda. Around the gentle contours of the lawns you'll see a small number of specimen trees such as an elm, Wellingtonia and oaks, complemented with na ves. Flowering borders will catch your eye with over 150 roses of hybrid-tea and floribunda varie es providing colour and contrast during the warmer months. From the homestead's veranda you'll appreciate the res ul views across the lawns, the pond and on towards Amberley.

The soil retains the moisture allowing a wonderful selec on of trees exo c and na ve to flourish in this newly established garden. As you enter park in front of the sheds. Walk up the drive and you'll see to your le pin oaks, silver birches, weeping willow and flax bushes, leading on to 6 magnificent cherry trees. To your right a collec on of kowhai trees leads to a row of agapanthus forming a border to a na ve garden of coprosma, hebes, pi osporums, ribbonwoods, meulenbeckia and mountain flaxes. Arriving at the house you'll no ce a striking combina on of 10 'Iceberg' roses coupled with minature blue agapanthus. Behind the house a towering line of oak trees frames the garden. It's the view from in front of the house across the garden to the hills and snow-covered mountains that will really take your breath away.

Delights and surprises A long avenue of poplars that line the driveway is the first of many delights you'll find at Saddlewood. The drive approaches the house where oak trees create a woodland se ng for mass plan ngs of spring bulbs. As you walk around the house through an array of deciduous trees, such as silver birches, ash, oaks and chestnuts, you'll no ce the plane trees, unexpected in Hurunui's harsh climate. The lawns behind the house open to the north with spectacular views of Mt Tekoa across several ponds and a ha-ha. Follow the paths and you'll discover the white garden featuring shrubs and perennials with green and silver foliage, and white flowers. You'll see lily of the valley, cistus, irises, aquilegia, hellebores, 'iceberg' roses, viburnum, solomon's seal and 'sweet mock orange' with its heavenly fragrance. The white garden is one of many deligh ul surprises you'll experience at Saddlewood.

Garden grew for a wedding Newstead's one-hectare garden grew because the lawn wasn't big enough for a wedding marquee. So out came the fences, the driveway was shi ed and a paddock was transformed into a series of connec ng garden rooms. You'll see a woodland garden of oak trees under-planted with pink and white flowering rhododendrons, azaleas and hostas. In the pergola garden you'll find the apricot 'crepuscule' rose and white and blue clema s flowering overhead, while nandinas, hydrangeas and roses put on a show in the garden below. Over a dozen flowering cherry trees splash colourful blossom around the garden. Enthusiasts of growing their own vegetables will be delighted by the extremely produc ve vegetable garden, feeding the family and friends with carrots, parsnips, beans, corn, leaks, onions, silver beet, tomatoes, le uces and over 50 pumpkins last season. One pumpkin weighing 91.5kgs was the prize-winning pumpkin at the 2019 Hawarden Show. You'll be torn between enjoying the decora ve charm of the garden and envying the produc ve and prize-winning capacity of Newstead.

Lush oasis The creek flowing through Coldstream garden is the secret to the spectacular growth of the garden established just 30 years ago. The one-hectare garden wraps around the farmhouse, with a series of interconnec ng lawns and pathways that led you from one area to the next. Mature oaks and silver birches provide height and a canopy to protect the large garden beds of established roses, camellias, and rhododendrons that together with mass plan ngs of daffodils, tulips and peonies put on a magnificent display in the spring. Between the canopy and under- plan ng you'll see en cing views across the surrounding farmland to distant mountains. Coldstream creek is put to good use naturally filtering the waters of a large pond surrounded by extensive plan ng. The je y is a great spot to feed the eels that come and visit. The largest pond features a gravity-fed fountain, created twenty years ago by the owner. The expansive open spaces are just part of this garden exhibi on. Natural advantages Wynyard garden, inland from Culverden, presents you with compelling views across the Amuri basin to the Southern Kaikouras mountain range in the north. The one-hectare garden, set to the north of the house is designed along naturalis c lines with large lawns, ha-ha and many varie es of exo c and na ve trees – such as oaks, walnuts, liriodendrons, koelreutaria, gledi sias, ashes, paro as, na ve beech, kowhai, lancewood and many more. It's the view from the house to the distant mountains that captures your eye. The views are cleverly framed by a substan al na ve garden on one side featuring ferns, clema s, flax, kowhai, astelias, beech and wineberries, offset with beau ful rocks, many collected from the Lowry Peaks range over 45 years. In contrast an exo c garden of roses, cherry trees, peonies and perennials frames your view on the other side. When you consider the disadvantages Wynyard has of clay soils underfoot and strong winds overhead, you'll appreciate how the garden design and choice of trees and plants uses nature to its advantage.

Hidden behind the holly hedge Highgate Garden has to be seen to be believed. Hidden behind the holly hedge in Hanmer Springs you'll find a 2000 square metre private green oasis. Within five minutes walk of the Thermal Pools, Highgate Garden consists of several dis nct areas. The front garden presents you with a classical garden style of box hedging, cherry trees and standard iceberg roses leading to the front door. The formality con nues through a vegetable garden to the side of the house. You'll discover the rear garden has lawns surrounded by densely planted perennials against a backdrop of mature trees, such as conifers, maples, magnolias and camellias forming a woodland area. Amongst the plan ng you'll see dogwood trees with their pink and white blossoms, and rari es such as the paperbark Acers. Extensive paved areas provide you places to sit and enjoy the serenity of the garden. Thirty years of compos ng has successfully turned a poorly drained clay backyard into a tranquil, lush garden retreat in the centre of the town.

While the Geen Garden is just 13 years old, though ul plan ng of trees that offer a habitat and food source for birds has already paid off, with korimako (bellbird), tūi and kererū (wood pigeon) all regular visitors. Last year a pair of korimako raised two fledgings in the garden. Riverside garden rooms The 2.5-hectare garden at Omihi Stream extends from the house on high ground down to an oxbow lake in the riverbed of the former Omihi Stream. You'll discover the contouring site has been turned into a series of garden areas. The top area is sheltered and separated by large leafed Tasman poplars and Hornbeam hedges. By the house there's a more formal garden surrounded with mass plan ng of lavenders and 30 'Iceberg' roses. A small bou que vineyard is also contained in this area. Down by the lake there is a more park like area containing oaks, chestnut, birches, prunus and an avenue of Pyrus Calleryana. A walk along the edge of the lake takes you into an orchard area. To the east of the house, you take a path flanked with concrete plinths and balls to the historic sheep pens, becoming entwined with clema s, climbing and old-fashioned roses and perennials in shades of so pink and purple. Halfway up the hill Rockford Garden looks as though it's been carved from the hillside – and in a sense it has been. Excava ng the site to build the house unearthed huge quan es of rocks, which have been used crea ng the walls that give shape and form to the garden. The excava on even created flat lawns, so unexpected on a hillside, and a great place for you to sit and admire the uninterrupted views. From the garden you'll see Mt Grey to the southwest, the Deans Range to the west and Mt Lyford in the north. The hills cradle the vineyards that spread below you through the Waipara valley. Na ves have been chosen to complement the natural texture of the rock walls and they're thriving. You'll see mul ple plan ngs of ngaio, southern rata and surprisingly even pohutukawa, grown from ny seedlings. The sunny, hillside microclimate is suppor ng the growth of a garden that's barely five years old and is already flourishing. It's a great se ng for a standout view.

A century in the making Century old Eucalyptus trees are the standout feature in the garden at Spye. The gum trees are essen al for shelter against the wind and tough enough to survive years of drought. You enter down a mature tree lined driveway to arrive at the garden that's laid out on classical lines. You'll see a large perennial border with mass plan ng of white irises, Euphorbia and silvery white lambs ear. A 'Mutabilis' rose hedge gives structure to the garden. The classical theme con nues with a formal area consis ng of eight Magnolia grandiflora trees each enclosed within a clipped box hedge, set in a gravel garden leading to a feature rock. You can gaze over the garden and lawns to the perennial border, surrounded and sheltered by those glorious 100-year old Eucalyptus trees. A century in the making this is a country garden classic.

You'll see these are perfect condi ons for a riot of colourful perennials, including many varie es of euphorbia, iris, penstemon, peony, salvia, tulip, some grown from seed. This plant lover's picking garden was first established in the 1940s around the original homestead and then expanded when the current house was built in 1995. Some original trees provide essen al shady spots for you to sit under and frame the garden designed along naturalis c lines. You'll wander along paths that twist and turn revealing rare and unusual perennials round every corner. Spring water sourced high in the hills ensures a substan al vegetable garden produces food most of the year. Na ve nursery naturally notable You would expect to find an impressive range of na ve plants in the Hurunui Na ves Plant Nursery and Gardens – and you do. Since the nursery was established in 2002, about one hectare of gardens has been planted. Spread over an open, elevated se ng that gives you views of the surrounding countryside, the gardens were designed to blend na ve, co age and flowering, tradi onal and func onal (fruit and vegetable) areas. Here you'll see familiar and rare na ves in their own display areas, used as shelterbelts, around waterways and ponds, and blended with exo cs. In the toughest of condi ons, with heavy wet soils in winter, hard frosts, drought and winds from all direc ons you'll admire how these na ves are thriving and be inspired to make Hurunui na ve plants a feature of your garden. The vegetable garden grows fresh produce including potatoes, shallots, onions, garlic, capsicums, beans, courge es, chilies, fennel, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries and currants enjoyed by houseguests. The dairy cow you see happily grazing in the paddocks produces milk the owners turn into bu er and cheeses, including Camembert, Cheddar, Cow Feta, Cream Cheese, Halloumi, Rico a and Parmesan. Garden on the edge of the world Clinging precariously to the hillside 100 metres above the Pacific Ocean, the garden at Cathedral Cliffs rewards you with spectacular sea views. The 2-hectare garden is a showcase of rhododendrons including rare unnamed varie es bred by the previous owner Murray Elliot. It's a rewarding challenge for rhododendron enthusiasts to see if they can name all the species! Though created just 25 years ago, the frost-free microclimate has enabled rhododendrons to grow to 7-8 metres tall. A variety of sun loving plants including succulents, agaves and proteas flourish, along with citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons and even an avocado. Roses are sprinkled throughout the garden, flowering almost year round. Sensible shoes are a prac cal choice for you to explore the garden, as it's steep in some places. Children will need supervising around the ponds. Fortunately you can enjoy the views over the garden and ocean from a seat on the veranda surrounding the house. Woodchester Station - Walls and Waterfalls Tour 'Woodchester Station', a high country farm near the town of Waiau, shot to fame when the 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes created the spectacular 'Wall of Waiau' and caused a landslide that created the kilometre-long 'Lake Rebekah'. Pictures were seen on television and online in New Zealand and the world. By special arrangement with the Gardiner-Kelly family, to celebrate a century of continuous family ownership, the Hurunui Garden Festival is delighted to offer visitors a rare opportunity to visit 'Woodchester Station' on a specially guided tour. Station owner Rebekah Kelly guides visitors to the 'Wall of Waiau' and to 'Lake Rebekah' explaining the massive forces that tore apart her family farm. Her grandmother spent half a century creating a hillside garden of over 100 rhododendrons. Lunch is served in the garden, where visitors are welcome to sit in the shade or climb to the pinetum at the top of the hillside with views to the Kaikoura mountains. There is one tour only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday limited to a maximum of 40 visitors. The tour costs $95 per person, and includes lunch and transport by bus departing daily from iSITE Hanmer Springs at 9am and Waiau (outside the Memorial Hall) at 10am. The bus returns to Waiau at 2pm and Hanmer Springs at 3pm. s must be purchased in

56 Terms and Conditions
The Hurunui Garden Festival gives you a rare opportunity to visit gardens in the Hurunui District. One of the conditions of entry to our gardens is that all visitors accept responsibility for their and their family's own health and safety while in the gardens. Many of the gardens are part of working farms, with livestock, dogs, electric fences and watercourses. Care must be taken, and visitors are advised to not wander outside designated garden areas for their own safety. Do not open farm gates, or approach farm animals for any reason. Parents must supervise children around waterways. Within garden areas there are potential hazards that could detract from your visit. Many gardens include streams and ponds that are not fenced, so please supervise young children at all times. Where there are fenced swimming pools the gates must remain closed at all times. Many gardens contain sloping or uneven surfaces, including bricks, wooden sleepers and grass that can be slippery when wet. We encourage all visitors to wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution on steep slopes. Be alert for low hanging branches when walking underneath tree canopies. Please ensure you remove any property you bring with you into the gardens. Owners are not responsible for disposing of rubbish or collecting and returning lost property. Please remember these are all private gardens. While you're welcome to explore the gardens the homes are not open, unless the owners are running tours. Please respect our owners' privacy. No smoking is permitted in the gardens, unless there is a specified area.
