After a highly successful launch last year, the Garden Festival is set to become Hurunui's annual Premier, Flagship Event. A number of new gardens have been added to this year's festival, including some located in stunning, relatively remote locations where the awesome power of nature will stun you. You will also be delighted by new and innovative attractions and activities in several of the gardens, designed to enhance the enjoyment of your visit. This Festival is a credit to the dedicated and inspirational organising committee and to our dedicated Garden Owners. I trust that you will enjoy this year's Garden Festival, as much as Jean and I enjoyed last year's inaugural Event, and that you will find the experience of exploring our districts garden relaxing, rewarding, and inspiring. Jean and Winton Dalley WELCOME From the Hurunui Garden Festival Organising Committee From le to right: Debbie Anderson, Meg Macfarlane (Treasurer), Robyn Ferguson, Anita Todd (Secretary), Lyn Atkinson, Marina Shearer (Chair), Vicki Colle, Grant Mangin, Doreen Dryden, Angie Mason Absent: Penny Zino We're thrilled to welcome you to the second Hurunui Garden Festival. Over the weekend you can visit 23 private gardens from Amberley to Gore Bay, and Hawarden to Hanmer Springs, many within one hour's drive of Christchurch and the airport. Our garden owners are ready to greet you and share their stories of how they've created their gardens. This year you can join a guided tour of Woodchester Station and see the Wall of Waiau and Lake Rebekah, and take a self-drive tour around the gardens and Hidden Gems of the Lowry Hills. There are garden events to educate, entertain and inspire you. While you're enjoying our gardens and warm hospitality, we hope you'll stay the night and visit our wineries, cafes, and the many other attractions of the Hurunui District. There's so much to experience and enjoy at the Garden Festival. We're inviting you to join us for a weekend in the gorgeous gardens of the Hurunui. 3 HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE This Guide contains all the information you need to enjoy a weekend visiting the private gardens of the Hurunui District during the Garden Festival. He went to the UK to improve his English for 4 months and was still there 27 years later. He completed the Botanic Garden Diploma course at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and then spent time with the World Conservation Monitoring Centre Cambridge helping with the World List of Threatened Trees book. He was assistant curator at Ness Botanic Gardens, the first curator at the National Botanic Garden of Wales and then spent 14 years as curator and director at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. Since September 2018 Wolfgang has been director of the Botanic Gardens and Garden Parks in Christchurch. Dr Janet Cubey was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and developed her love of plants while studying butterflies as a child. She completed the Diploma Course at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. This garden is famous for its extensive rhododendron collection and inspired Janet to do a PhD at Ness Botanic Gardens. She then became a botanist with the Royal Horticultural Society based at Wisley. During her 20 years with the RHS she's run the plant identification service, and worked internationally with cultivar registration and the cultivated plant code. Janet is Editor-in-Chief of the RHS Plant Finder, a role she continues to do from New Zealand.
