Movie remembers ANZACS See inside By Rebecca Jenkins Whilst many a great soldier fought bravely during the Great War from 1914 - TV Guide 1918, most forget that it wasn’t just the humans that showed great courage ADDING TO YEARS during this dark time. Over 130,000 Australian horses served our country in the First World War by carrying our warriors into and out of battle. Very sadly, just like the humans, some didn’t make it out alive. During the Battle of Damascus, nearly 30,000 horses were engaged in battle in the Middle East. Story continued page 2.

Movie remembers ANZACS Continued from front page Despite this being the birthplace of their reputation and legend, none returned home. The significance of their role in WWI has been celebrated in a recent documentary by Director Russell Vines: “The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse.” The Waler (a breed of colonial-bred horse from dating back to the First Fleet) has long been an asset to our nation and Australians have always shown great pride for their four-legged companions. They’ve always been a source of companionship and helped make our nation what it is today. This documentary details the sacrifice, mateship and the enduring heart-felt bond that we as Australians have with our horses, specifically the Waler. The documentary was filmed in various locations including Haydon Horse Stud in Murrurundi. Established since 1832, the stud has seen many a generation of Haydon take the leadership reins. Currently Peter Haydon has them in hand and also features in the documentary itself. It wasn’t just the location and beauty of Haydon Horse Stud that made it a perfect location to shoot, but also the history. The Waler shines a light on local Upper Hunter legends that rode their Walers into battle. In this case, Peter’s ancestor Lieutenant Guy Haydon is a focus. During the Battle of Beersheba, Lt Haydon was injured by a bullet that passed into his spine through his beloved mare, Midnight. Unfortunately, the mare (born and raised on the Haydon Horse Stud) did not survive. But her bravery, strength and sacrifice has not been forgotten. In later times, that same stud contributed to the horse populous of the Battle of Damascus. The documentary (presented by Scone Films) will be premiering at the Senior Citizens Centre in Scone on the 24th April. For more information on the documentary, please head to http://greatwarhorses.com/. For more information on the screening, please head to www.sconefilms.org.au. “The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse” is a stunning tribute to one of man’s best friends. Don’t miss your chance to see it.

The Council joined the Blue Heeler Film Festival as a sponsor this year and hosted a screening of a short film before the feature ‘Beneath Hill 60’ which is based on the true story of Australian miners who played an historic role in World War 1. In the audience with his family was fifteen year old film maker Lleyton Hails of Scone who the following night was announced as winner of the festival’s top prize - ‘The Bluey’ for his film ‘Dawn of the #Hashtag’. It was the second time Lleyton had entered a film in the Blue Heeler Film Festival. Last year he won the People’s Choice award. Lleyton said he had really benefited from joining up for last year’s ‘Make a Movie’ workshop weekend run by the Upper Hunter Youth Council with funding from Regional Arts NSW. The Old Court Theatre, which has been owned and managed by the Upper Hunter Shire Council since 2013, can be booked for private and community social functions, lectures and debates. Film family: Gerry Hendriksen, Anne Beckenham, film maker Lleyton Hails, 15, who won ‘The Bluey’ prize and Kirsty Hails all of Scone were at the Scone Old Court Theatre screening as part of the Blue Heeler Film Festival. Carousel to War Horse Haydon Hall in Murrurundi is pleased to present “Carousel to War Horse” an exhibition by ceramicist Susanne Fraser from Alstonville, (northern NSW) commencing on 30th April and running until 31st May 2015 which will coincide with the 2015 Upper Hunter Horse Festival.

From our childhood fantasies and escapism of riding a horse on the carousel and all the fun of the fair through to the multiple areas of basic war manoeuvres and training of the dressage horse which is the foundation of all excellent sporting horses today . . . this all goes towards fuelling Susanne Fraser’s passion for the horse and its influence in history and today. In recent years Susanne’s fascination with Chinese art history has increased Scone Motor Inn and she has developed a particular focus on the social and spiritual bonds between women and horses. Conference Centre “I have become convinced that the stereotypical theories such as ‘the s3TAR,,,,Accommodation; Corporate Rates romantic ideal’, and ‘quest for sexual dominance’ do not explain these s#ONFERENCEAND-EETING2OOMS&REE7I &I)NTERNET bonds. Up, up and away at the Upper Hunter Wine & Food Affair He’s the first Australian pilot to successfully perform the world famous Triple Ribbon Cut, he’s performed over 600 aerial displays in front of an estimated several million spectators and next month, he’ll be barrel-rolling his way across the skies above the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair on Saturday 2nd May at Denman.

As the expected 5,000-plus spectators immerse themselves in all the glorious culture, music, food and wine that will be available on the ground, renowned aerobatics pilot, Paul Bennet, is set to tear up the sky with his world famous low-level, fly-over aerobatics show. The show itself is 10 minutes of fast-paced, biplane action. Starting with a dive of 2,500 feet straight to ground level and reaching speeds of over 300 km/h; the display consists of a variety of rolls, hammerheads, loops and tumbles. It’s the finale however that is especially unique. Paul Bennet is one of only two pilots in the world to actively perform the Triple Ribbon Cut in front of a live audience. The stunt itself is a bit of a feat! Three ribbons are placed 300 feet apart from one another and 16 foot in the air. Paul then cuts the first ribbon with the left wing, the second with the right wing then (here’s the easy part) Paul flies his low-flying Pitts Special Biplane upside-down in order to cut the third with the plane’s fin! Paul’s aircraft, the Pitts Special S1S Biplane, is a marvel to watch in itself. Named after its creator, Curtis Pitts, it’s specially designed to ‘defy gravity, climb, roll and change altitude’ rapidly, whilst remaining ‘crisp’ on the controls. When it made its first appearance in 1945, it revolutionised aerobatic competition world-wide due to its size, light-weight, short wingspan and extreme agility. Paul is stunningly proficient in his skills as an aerobatic pilot. Winning first place in a number of competitions and logging up over 4,000 flight hours in total. Readers will also be pleased and relieved to hear that Paul Bennet has an accident-free record. But this doesn’t prevent him from taking his audience’s breaths away throughout the show! The Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair always proves to be an amazing experience for the whole family – don’t miss it. Buses will be running within Maitland, Singleton, Scone, Muswellbrook and Merriwa. For more information, please go to: www.upperhunterwineandfoodaffair.com.au The sky is the limit: Paul Bennet’s Air Show will deliver a spectacular display at next month’s Upper Hunter Wine & Food Affair.

– Sally Ham returns! By Rebecca Jenkins After a taking some “time out” to marry and start a family, the extremely- talented trickrider Sally Ham is returning to King of the Ranges to compete in the Ladies Challenge. Sally is a naturally-talented local horsewoman that has been riding since her first steps. Starting with pony club events, campdrafting and polocrosse, Sally had her first taste of trickriding in 2005 and hasn’t looked back. Sally is one of the top in the sport and even has her own company of award-winning trickriders - High Velocity, which she founded in 2008. Sally’s High Velocity riders will be performing on the 2nd of May at the King of the Ranges in Murrurundi, led by another very talented local trickrider, Katie Gibson. Katie trained for a mere six months before her first trickriding show, but also makes comment that practise and training is the key to any sport. “Anyone with enough dedication can do it, but you have to be fit, it’s very physically demanding.” says Katie “You must know and trust your horses, because you expect a lot from them. It’s a challenge and you get a massive adrenaline rush. The faster the horse is moving, the smoother it is to do the trick.” Katie and High Velocity will be presenting a demonstration in Ring 1 for those who wish to know a little bit more about how horse selection in trickriding is conducted, with some spectacular tricks thrown in! Don’t miss Sally Ham competing in the Cross Country Jumping Event of the Stockman’s Challenge as well as her talented team of trickriders (performing on Saturday afternoon - 2nd May) at King of the Ranges in Murrurundi. The Festival has a little something for the entire family and it’s guaranteed to contain fun and excitement for everyone. For more information on KOTR head to kingoftheranges.com.au or drop into your local Visitor Information Centre. Daredevil and skilled: Trickrider Katie Gibson will join forces with Sally Ham’s High Velocity at the KOTR in Murrurundi.
