Over 130,000 Australian horses served our country in the First World War by carrying our warriors into and out of battle. Very sadly, just like the humans, some didn’t make it out alive. During the Battle of Damascus, nearly 30,000 horses were engaged in battle in the Middle East. Story continued page 2. The significance of their role in WWI has been celebrated in a recent documentary by Director Russell Vines: “The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse.” The Waler (a breed of colonial-bred horse from New South Wales dating back to the First Fleet) has long been an asset to our nation and Australians have always shown great pride for their four-legged companions. They’ve always been a source of companionship and helped make our nation what it is today. This documentary details the sacrifice, mateship and the enduring heart-felt bond that we as Australians have with our horses, specifically the Waler. The documentary was filmed in various locations including Haydon Horse Stud in Murrurundi. Established since 1832, the stud has seen many a generation of Haydon take the leadership reins. Currently Peter Haydon has them in hand and also features in the documentary itself. It wasn’t just the location and beauty of Haydon Horse Stud that made it a perfect location to shoot, but also the history. The Waler shines a light on local Upper Hunter legends that rode their Walers into battle. In this case, Peter’s ancestor Lieutenant Guy Haydon is a focus. During the Battle of Beersheba, Lt Haydon was injured by a bullet that passed into his spine through his beloved mare, Midnight. Unfortunately, the mare (born and raised on the Haydon Horse Stud) did not survive. But her bravery, strength and sacrifice has not been forgotten. In later times, that same stud contributed to the horse populous of the Battle of Damascus. The documentary (presented by Scone Films) will be premiering at the Senior Citizens Centre in Scone on the 24th April. The Upper Hunter Shire Council joined the Blue Heeler Film Festival as a sponsor this year and hosted a screening of a short film before the feature ‘Beneath Hill 60’ which is based on the true story of Australian miners who played an historic role in World War 1. In the audience with his family was fifteen year old film maker Lleyton Hails of Scone who the following night was announced as winner of the festival’s top prize - ‘The Bluey’ for his film ‘Dawn of the #Hashtag’. It was the second time Lleyton had entered a film in the Blue Heeler Film Festival. Last year he won the People’s Choice award. Lleyton said he had really benefited from joining up for last year’s ‘Make a Movie’ workshop weekend run by the Upper Hunter Youth Council with funding from Regional Arts NSW. The Old Court Theatre, which has been owned and managed by the Upper Hunter Shire Council since 2013, can be booked for private and community social functions, lectures and debates. Film family: Gerry Hendriksen, Anne Beckenham, film maker Lleyton Hails, 15, who won ‘The Bluey’ prize and Kirsty Hails all of Scone were at the Scone Old Court Theatre screening as part of the Blue Heeler Film Festival. Carousel to War Horse Haydon Hall in Murrurundi is pleased to present “Carousel to War Horse” an exhibition by ceramicist Susanne Fraser from Alstonville, (northern NSW) commencing on 30th April and running until 31st May 2015 which will coincide with the 2015 Upper Hunter Horse Festival. From our childhood fantasies and escapism of riding a horse on the carousel and all the fun of the fair through to the multiple areas of basic war manoeuvres and training of the dressage horse which is the foundation of all excellent sporting horses today . this all goes towards fuelling Susanne Fraser’s passion for the horse and its influence in history and today. In recent years Susanne’s fascination with Chinese art history has increased Scone Motor Inn and she has developed a particular focus on the social and spiritual bonds between women and horses.
