KOORAGANG WETLANDS: RETROSPECTIVE OF AN INTEGRATED ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION PROJECT IN THE HUNTER RIVER ESTUARY P Svoboda Hunter Local Land Services, Paterson NSW Introduction: At first glance, the Hunter River estuary near Newcastle NSW is a land of contradictions. It is home to one of the world’s largest coal ports and a large industrial complex as well as being the location of a large internationally significant wetland. The remarkable natural productivity of the Hunter estuary at the time of European settlement is well documented. Also well documented are the degradation and loss of fisheries and other wildlife habitat in the estuary due to over 200 years of draining, filling, dredging and clearing (Williams et al., 2000). However, in spite of extensive modification, natural systems of the estuary retained enough value and function for large areas to be transformed by restoration activities that aimed to show industry and environmental conservation could work together to their mutual benefit. By establishing partnerships and taking a collaborative and adaptive approach, the project was able to implement restoration and related activities on a landscape basis, working across land ownership and management boundaries (Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project, 2010). The Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project (KWRP) was launched in 1993 to help compensate for the loss of fisheries and other wildlife habitat at suitable sites in the Hunter estuary. This paper revisits the expectations and planning for the project as presented in a paper to the INTECOL’s V international wetlands conference in 1996 (Svoboda and Copeland, 1998), reviews the project’s activities, describes outcomes and summarises issues faced and lessons learnt during 24 years of implementing a large, long-term, integrated, adaptive and community-assisted ecological restoration project. -

And the time to do it is now. The NSW State Government should be recognised for delivering on its pre-election promises to preserve the Hunter Valley wine tourism region from CSG mining by confirming exclusion zones around the villages of Broke and Bulga as well as around significant areas defined as Viticulture Critical Industry Clusters (VCIC). But protecting most of the region, while leaving several critical areas open for CSG exploration and mining, could have devastating consequences for the iconic Hunter region as a whole – and undo the Government’s efforts thus far. While mining is obviously a legitimate land use and an important revenue source, this can’t justify allowing mining activities in areas where other existing, profitable industries would be adversely affected. Put simply, winemaking, tourism and CSG mining are not compatible land uses. The popularity and reputation of the Hunter Valley wine tourism region is fundamentally connected to the area’s natural beauty and landscape – and that natural beauty will fast disappear if the countryside is peppered with unsightly gas wells. Research reveals 80%1 of Hunter Valley visitors don’t want to see gas wells in the wine and tourism region, with 70%2 saying if gas wells are established they’ll just stop coming. -

Chapter 2 Issues 2.1 This chapter discusses a number of concerns raised in relation to proposed coal and gas exploration and mining/drilling on the Liverpool Plains area of NSW, in particular by BHP Billiton Ltd (BHP), Shenhua Watermark Coal Pty Ltd (Shenhua) and Santos Ltd (Santos). Particular concerns were raised at the potential for these developments to adversely impact on agricultural activities in the area. Background 2.2 The Liverpool Plains covers an area of 12 000 square kilometres located in the north-west of New South Wales some 400 kilometres from Sydney. It is bounded by the Great Dividing Range to the east, the Liverpool Range to the south and the Warrumbungles to the west. The area is a sedimentary flood plain that has been laid down over several million years to provide a very rich, fertile farming area.1 Importance of the Liverpool Plains to food production 2.3 The area's fertile black soils have a high water holding capacity with reliable summer and winter rainfall. The crops in the area consistently produce 40 per cent above the national average. The area grows a diverse range of crops such as wheat, sorghum, oats, soybeans, barley, corn, sunflowers and cotton. It also produces chickpeas, mungbeans, canola, olives, turkeys, chickens, pigs, lambs and wool. In addition it has a significant beef industry. The area is unique in that it produces two crops per year, unlike the majority of farming areas. The Liverpool Plains contributes an estimated $332 million to GDP annually.2 2.4 The area produces 28 per cent of the state's sorghum, 33 per cent of sunflowers and 16 per cent of the state's maize. -

But Anglo-Australian settlement isyounger and better documented, bothin termsof scientific proxy data and historical sources, which include data on stockingrates that generally werelight. Environmental concerns were voiced early, and a livelydebate continues both among professionals andthe lay public, with Australian geographers playing a major academic and applied role. This article addresses environmentaldegradation often attributed to earlypastoralism (and implicit clearance) in theTablelands of NewSouth Wales. Methods include: (1) comparisonofwell-reported travel itineraries of1817-1833 with mod- ernland cover and streamchannels; (2) criticalreviews of high-resolutionpollen profiles and theissues of Aboriginalvs. Anglo-Australian fireecology; and (3) identificationofsoil erosion and gullying both before and afterAnglo-Australian intrusion. The results indicate that (a) landcover of the Tablelands islittle changed since priorto Contact,although some species are less common, while invasive genera of legumes have modified the groundcover; (b) thecharcoal trace in pollen profiles prior to Contact supports an ecologicalimpact -

Here we present new data from the southernmost part of the Supporting Information: • Supporting Information S1 oroclinal structure, the Manning Orocline, which supposedly developed in the Early Permian, contemporaneously and/or shortly after the deposition of the Lower Permian Manning Basin. New U-Pb detrital zircon data provide Correspondence to: a maximum depositional age of ~288 Ma. Structural evidence from rocks of the Manning Basin indicates that L. White, both bedding and preoroclinal fold axial planes are approximately oriented parallel to the trace of the Manning [email protected] Orocline. Brittle deformation was dominated by sinistral strike-slip faulting, particularly along a major fault zone (Peel-Manning Fault System), which is marked by the occurrence of a serpentinitic mélange, and separates Citation: tectonostratigraphic units of the New England Orogen. Crown Copyright 2003: Use permitted with appropriate acknowledgment. 3 ISBN 0 7313 6947 5 4 FOREWORD Goulburn River National Park, conserving approximately 70 161 hectares of dissected sandstone country, and the neighbouring Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve with its 5 935 hectares of sandstone pagoda formation country, both protect landscapes, biology and cultural sites of great value to New South Wales. The national park and nature reserve are located in a transition zone of plants from the south-east, north-west and western parts of the State. The Great Dividing Range is at its lowest elevation in this region and this has resulted in the extension of many plants species characteristic of further west in NSW into the area. In addition a variety of plant species endemic to the Sydney Sandstone reach their northern and western limits in the park and reserve. -

Turill 1 Core Hole Is Designed to Investigate the Hydrocarbon Potential of PEL 456
Review of Environmental Factors Core Hole Drilling of Turill No. 1 in PEL 456 - Gunnedah Basin Santos QNT Pty Ltd ABN: 33 083 077 196 Issue date: 04/05/2010 Review of Environmental Factors: Gunnedah Basin Core Hole Drilling: PEL 456 Executive Summary Santos QNT Pty Ltd (Santos) has entered into a Farmin Agreement with the titleholder of PEL 456, Macquarie Energy (Macquarie) to explore for petroleum (in accordance with the Petroleum (Onshore) Act 1991 (NSW)). Santos has been appointed the Operator for and on behalf of the titleholder under the Farmin Agreement. Condition 1.0 of the PEL 456 licence states that prior to carrying out any drilling activities a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) is required to be submitted to the Department of Industry and Investment (DII) to enable a determination to be made under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (NSW). The Turill 1 core hole is designed to investigate the hydrocarbon potential of PEL 456. Discovery of gas resources in this area has the potential to increase the state’s reserves and revenue from coal seam gas and underpin future exploration or production in the region. This REF covers the drilling of Turill 1 core hole only. The Turill No. 1 core hole site is located on privately owned land, zoned General Rural 1(a) under the Merriwa Local Environmental Plan (LEP). The REF provides details of the planning controls for the area and the existing environment. The site proposed for Turill 1 is a privately owned rural property in a gently undulating area, which is presently used for agricultural activities.
