El Juego Real De Cupido: a Spanish Board Game Published in Antwerp, C
El Juego Real de Cupido: a Spanish board game published in Antwerp, c. 1620 Marjolein Leesberg he British Library’s Department of Maps the field of game history. The present article holds a remarkable print, published by draws upon both disciplines in order to shed new T the Antwerp engraver, designer and light on this extraordinary, and possibly unique, publisher Pieter de Jode I (1573-1634) (fig. 1 on impression of a board game issued by De Jode. p. 24).1 The etching is not a map, as would be expected in view of the cartographic nature of the collection as well as the history of the De Pieter de Jode I as engraver and publisher Jode family as publishers of maps. Rather, it turns Pieter de Jode I was the son of the Antwerp out to be a board game of the Game of Cupid publisher Gerard de Jode (1516/17-1591).2 After or so-called Game of Snake. Even more unusual having been trained as an engraver in his father’s is the fact that all inscriptions are in Spanish, workshop as well as by Hendrick Goltzius in Haar- including De Jode’s Antwerp address. It will be lem, De Jode worked for a short period as a print argued here that this Spanish Game of Cupid, designer and engraver for his brother-in-law Hans issued in Antwerp about 1620, may be one of the Jacops in Amsterdam. In 1595, he left for Italy first of these games that appeared in print. where he worked in Venice, Siena, and Rome.3 Early impressions of board games are After his return to Antwerp and the death of both extremely rare, since they were not considered his older brother Cornelis in 1600 and his mother ‘art’ but objects to be pasted on a board and in 1601, De Jode continued the publishing firm in used. -
Travels Into and out of the Record
MAURICE BOND MEMORIAL LECTURE 2013 TRAVELS INTO AND OUT OF THE RECORD By Eric Ketelaar1 The paper discusses some features of journals and travel accounts. They are, as any record, a repository of meanings, some to be read in the record or inferred from the intertextuality that connects it to other documents. Other meanings have to be deducted from the context of the record’s creation and use. Therefore, historicizing the social and cultural practice of archiving and understanding the archival consciousness of society are important. Keywords: journals, maps, archiving, Tasman, Dutch East India Company, William of Orange Introduction Travels into and out of the record: please join me on my time travel to the 17th century, where we will meet travellers like William of Orange, the Amsterdam burgomaster Nicolaes Witsen, and the captains Willem de Vlamingh and Abel Tasman, who explored the coast of Australia. I will also present arm chair travellers like Melchisédech Thévenot and John Narborough. They all created, used, edited and published journals and travel accounts. I will discuss some features of this genre and the intertextuality with other records. Only a small amount of records ever created, have been preserved. Nevertheless, as I will argue, the decision to destroy a document is as much part of the archival consciousness as is the decision to keep it. Archival consciousness can be observed through different lenses, as anthropologists, sociologists, scholars of cultural studies and historians have shown in the past few decades having -
Reference Resources for Cataloguing German and Low Countries Imprints to Ca. 1800

Auerbach: Marian Piety and Goltzius's Life of the Virgin MAruA.N PIETY AND THE FoRGING OF CoMMUNITY IN HENDRICK GoLTZIUs's THE LIFE OF THE ViRGIN Elissa Auerbach, Ph.D.* Introduction On May 29, 1578, riotous Dutch Calvinist soldiers entered Haarlem's St. Bavo Cathedral during the holy feast-day cele bration of Corpus Christi where they incited a scene of complete bedlam.1 Brandishing swords and shouting at wor shippers, the soldiers killed a priest and plundered the church, thus bringing a decisive end to the Catholic ownership of the cathedral. Throughout the summer, Calvinists removed from the church the works of art and liturgical objects that were most offensive to them, and in September the Reformed Church officially reconsecrated the building as the Grote Kerk (Great Church). -

Serie 2. -

Press Release No.2003-53
Press Release No.2003-53 TWENTY-THREE NEW INSCRIPTIONS ON MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER OF DOCUMENTARY COLLECTIONS Paris, September 1 – The Declaration of the Rights of Man and documents pertaining to slavery in the Caribbean are among the 23 documentary collections from 20 countries selected for inscription on the Memory of the World Register of library and archive material during a three-day meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme in Gdansk, Poland, that ended Saturday. Twelve new countries enter the Register: Barbados, Brazil, Chile, France, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Serbia and Montenegro, Tajikistan, Thailand, and Uruguay. A total of 91 properties from 45 countries are inscribed on the Memory of the World Register, which was established in 1997 to preserve and promote documentary heritage of universal value. In a message to the meeting, UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura expressed his determination and UNESCO’s willingness “to encourage and pool efforts at all levels to protect unique and endangered books, manuscripts, archival documents, audio-visual materials, e-heritage and oral traditions through the use of state-of-the art technologies conducive to wider accessibility and dissemination.” The Memory of the World Programme was set up by UNESCO ten years ago to preserve and promote documentary heritage, much of which is endangered. The programme helps networks of experts to exchange information and raise resources for preservation, digitization and dissemination of documentary material. The inscriptions are determined by the IAC, a body of 14 leading specialists appointed by the Director- General. The complete list of properties selected by the International Advisory Committee of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme follows: Austria - The Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem of the Austrian National Library.
