The Dutch East India Company traded here mainly in cinnamon, pepper and elephants. By means of surveyors and mapmakers the Company was able to perpetuate their colonial governance and explore new trading opportunities. However in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the Company would endure several economic setbacks as a result of ecological damage, like disappointing yields and withdrawing of elephant populations into unknown regions. These consequences were not only the result of the exploitative Dutch policy, but already took place much earlier by pre-colonial tribes and the Portuguese colonists. They had developed an administrative structure for extracting ‘natural’ profits that the Dutch could take over. Via a variety of imaging sources, like engravings, natural historical illustrations and personal observations, it is possible to trace the impact of colonial trade in an exotic environment. Exotica op papier 72 Conclusie 98 Archivalia 103 Bronnen 104 Literatuur 109 5 Inleiding Op de wereldkaart die de vermaarde Nederlandse kaartenmaker Joan Blaeu in 1648 vervaardigde, luidt de beschrijving van het eiland Ceylon: ‘Op het eiland Ceylon groeit kaneel in zulke hoeveelheden, dat het over de hele wereld begeerd is’.2 Dit was het ‘bekoorde’ kaneeleiland, dat tussen 1656 en 1795 een handelskolonie was van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC). Om te kunnen concurreren met andere (opkomende) Europese handelsondernemingen trachtte de VOC het eiland zo winstgevend mogelijk te maken, met kaneel als één van de voornaamste exportproducten. De handel in kaneel leverde de Compagnie rendement op, maar had niet alleen een economische dimensie; de geïntensiveerde kaneelteelt op plantages had óók repercussies voor de natuurlijke omgeving op Ceylon. In 1786 vermeldt de Zweedse naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg in een publicatie van het Zeeuwsch Genootschap der Wetenschappen: ‘Het is oneindig dienstiger voor de Hollandsche Kompagnie, haare Kaneel dus uit een geplante Tuin te doen haalen, dan die door de Cingaleezen wyd en zyd in de Boschen te laaten opzoeken. Bovendien is deeze Drogery in de Boschen niet meer zoo overvloedig als voorheen: ten deele, alzoo de Landeryën, welke de beste Kaneel gaven, tot andere gebruiken zyn besteed; ten deele, omdat de Kaneelboomen in de Wildernissen niet gehavend [onderhouden] werden’.3 Het is de vraag hoe het koloniaal beleid van de VOC zijn weerslag had op de natuurlijke omgeving van Ceylon in de ‘Nederlandse’ periode van 1662 tot 1785. Uitvoerig onderzoek naar veranderingen op het milieu van Ceylon als gevolg van economische exploitatie door de VOC ontbreekt nog binnen de geschiedschrijving. Ceylon, het huidige Sri Lanka, is een eiland van ruim 65.500 vierkante kilometer (vergelijkbaar met het huidige oppervlak van Nederland en België bij elkaar) en gelegen onder India. Gedurende de zestiende eeuw telde de inheemse bevolking van Ceylon ongeveer 600.000 mensen. Thunberg, ‘Aanmerkingen over de kaneel op Ceylon’, Verhandelingen uitgegeven door het Zeeuwsch genootschap der wetenschappen te Vlissingen (1786) 296-312, aldaar 309. 6 koninkrijken die hun macht vooral ontleenden aan de waarde van de handelsproducten die in het ‘eigen’ gebied binnen de natuurlijke grenzen van het eiland te vinden waren.4 Het welvarendste en invloedrijkste koninkrijk genaamd Kotte lag in het zuidwesten,5 en kon zich ontwikkelen door de voor maritieme handel gunstige geografische ligging én een monopolie op kaneel.6 Deze specerij groeide tot de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw met name in de bossen van de ‘vochtige zone’, een klimatologische regio die onder het koninkrijk Kotte viel.7 Kaneel was voor de lokale bevolking tot de zestiende eeuw geen voornaam handelsproduct geweest, maar door de stijgende vraag uit Europa, veranderde de commerciële focus van de Ceylonese koninkrijken om aan de vroegmoderne wereldhandel te kunnen (blijven) deelnemen.8 Toen de Portugezen in 1505 voor het eerst op Ceylon aankwamen, hadden zij in eerste instantie geen interesse in andere handelswaar dan kaneel.9 De kaneelhandel vormde voor de Portugezen gedurende de zestiende eeuw een belangrijke stimulans voor de annexatie van het koninkrijk Kotte en, van daaruit, de rest van het eiland:10 ‘[Portugal] introduceerde het alleenrecht op kaneel’,11 schrijft de Portugees Rodigues de Saa in 1630.12 Het lukte de Portugezen namelijk om in de periode van 1506 tot 1656 bijna alle kustgebieden onder hun bewind te brengen, op het koninkrijk Kandy aan de oostkust na. De Portugezen legden zich vooral toe op de lokale handelsproducten en gingen zich, naast kaneel, ook op peper en olifanten richten. Daarbij veranderden zij niet zozeer de inheemse productiemethoden, maar brachten de Portugezen de Ceylonese producten wel in contact met een groter handelsnetwerk dan voorheen mogelijk was 4 C. Het was uiteindelijk de VOC die vanaf het midden van de achttiende eeuw de productie op Ceylon op een grotere schaal zou gaan exploiteren.13 De kennis over Azië in de Nederlanden (maar ook in de rest van Europa) was in de zestiende eeuw nog schaars omdat de Portugezen economische concurrentie vreesden wanneer zij informatie hierover zouden publiceren.14 Over Ceylon ontstonden in de Republiek dan ook wonderlijke geruchten zoals dat het eiland zou zijn opgebouwd uit saffieren en robijnen, en dat de gewassen een parfumachtig aroma zouden verspreiden. Zelfs de kleurrijke paradijsvogel zou zich hier bevinden.15 In opdracht van de Zeeuwse zakenman Balthazar de Moucheron, voer Joris van Spilbergen in 1601, nog vóór de oprichting van de VOC, richting Ceylon om het eerste Nederlandse contact te leggen met de koning van Kandy; het enige koninkrijk dat niet onder gezag van Portugal stond.16 De Ceylonese historische kroniek Culavamsa vermeldt in de zestiende eeuw: ‘Zij [Portugezen] verspreidden zich over verschillende schone provincies, verwoestten velden en tuinen (…) en brachten op deze wijze verwoesting in Sihala [land der Singalesen]’.17 Eveneens karakteriseert de Culavamsa de Portugezen als Parangi [boosdoeners].18 De koning van Kandy verzocht Van Spilbergen om hem steun te verlenen in de strijd tegen de Portugezen, maar de (inmiddels opgerichte) VOC achtte zich daartoe op dat moment nog niet in staat.19 De Staten-Generaal stelden op 20 maart 1602 een octrooi op waarmee zij de VOC het alleenrecht verleenden op de handel van de Republiek tussen Kaap de Goede Hoop en de Straat van Magellanes.20 De VOC kreeg toestemming van de Staten-Generaal om met lokale vorsten overeenkomsten te sluiten, oorlog te voeren, besturen te vormen en 13 D.     Geleitwort Wer sich mit der Ermittlung, der Katalogisierung oder dem bibliographischen Nachweis Alter Drucke befasst, benötigt eine breite Palette der unterschiedlichsten Hilfsmittel. Da, wo noch keine modernen Standardreferenzwerke vorliegen, ist der Rückgriff auf ältere, zeitnahe oder zeitgenössische Werke oft unverzichtbar. Im Rahmen seiner langjährigen Tätigkeit an der National Library of Scotland hat sich Dr. William A. Kelly intensiv mit der retrospektiven Bibliographie der deutschen und der niederländischen Druckschriften beschäftigt und über viele Jahre hinweg auf diesem Gebiet ein beinahe konkurrenzloses Expertenwissen erworben. Es ehrt ihn, dass er diese Kenntnisse von Anfang an mit anderen, bibliothekarischen Kollegen zumal, teilen wollte. Ursprünglich war „nur“ an eine Ergänzung eines bereits 1982 eingeführten Hilfsmittels gedacht – der Standard Citation Forms of published bibliographies and catalogues used in rare book cataloging nämlich. Angesichts der umfassenden Kenntnisse und der Gründlichkeit des Bearbeiters zeigte sich jedoch rasch, dass das Supplement für den deutschen und niederländischen Bereich den Umfang des gesamten Hauptwerks um ein vielfaches übertreffen würde: In seinem verdienstvollen Verzeichnis weist Dr. Kelly fast 2.150 einschlägige (bio-)bibliographische Nachschlagewerke nach. Da ein derart hoch-spezialisiertes Werk jedoch naturgemäß nur einen sehr eingeschränkten Käuferkreis findet, mochte – trotz großer inhaltlicher Wertschätzung - kein Verleger das unternehmerische Risiko einer kommerziellen Publikation

Joan Gideon Lx)ten staat in de literatuur bekend als de natuuronderzoeker- gouvemeur van Ceylon'. Hij wordt algemeen beschouwd als de grondlegger van de huidige kennis van de ornithologie van dit eiland^. De Ceylonese zonnevogel Nectarina lotenia (Linnaeus, 1766)^ herinnert blijvend aan Loten's activiteiten en verdiensten voor de vogelkennis van Sri Lanka. Loten's faam als omitholoog is terug te brengen op zijn coilectie waterverfteke- ningen van Ceylonese dieren en planten. Deze aquarellen werden tijdens zijn bestuur over dit eiland (1752-1757) door Pieter Cornells de Bevere (1722-v66r 1781) vervaardigd. In de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw werden zij door verschil- lende Engelse ornithologen in hun werken afgebeeld en beschreven. De coilectie is daardoor van belang voor de systematische dierkunde. Na Loten's dood is de verzameling verspreid geraakt over verschillende Engelse en Nederlandse musea. Na zijn jeugd in Utrecht te hebben doorgebracht vertrok Loten begin 1732 in de rang van onderkoopman bij de Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie met het schip 'Beekvliet' naar Batavia". Tot 1757 verbleef hij in de kolonien en diende hij de Compagnie in verschillende rangen. Zo was hij gouverneur van Makassar op Celebes (1744-1748) en gezant van de Raad van Indie tijdens de onlusten op Bantam in 1752'. Frits van Dulm Iman Wilhelm Falck (1736-1785) verhuisde als jongeling van Ceylon, het huidige Sri Lanka, naar Utrecht, waar hij rech- ten studeerde. Hij koos niet voor een bestuurlijke loopbaan ‘Zonder eigen gewinne en glorie’ in de Republiek, maar voor een ongewisse carrière in Azië. In 1765 werd hij benoemd tot gouverneur van de VOC-vestiging Ceylon, waar hij een einde maakte aan de oorlog met het binnen- landse koninkrijk Kandy. Gedurende twintig jaar toonde hij een eigenzinnige visie op de te volgen politiek ten opzichte van de opdringende Britse macht in India. Zijn matige gezondheid en grote teleurstelling over het weinig krachtige Nederlandse optreden tijdens de Vierde En- gelse Oorlog deden hem afzien van een verdere car- rière in Batavia. Deze biografie van Falck, gebaseerd op vele herontdekte archieven, geeft een interes- sant beeld van zijn leven als diplomaat, zijn familieachtergronden, netwerken en intriges evenals de handel en de bin- nen- en buitenlandse politiek in de acht- tiende eeuw.

As. in the past, it is our aim to maintain the high standards of English prose and poetry and every attempt will be made to attract the scholar, the historian, the literary minded and the lover of the fine arts, to contribute in no small way to this annual publication. During the course of this year the Director of Census and Statis­ tics made some very interesting comments on his "sampling" done on population in 1981; the most significant being that the literacy rate had risen to 86.5 per cent and the other important point made being ERRATUM that the Burghers were the most literate community (97.1 per cent).
