NAS engages in public advocacy to pass legislation to advance the cause of higher education reform. We file friend-of-the-court briefs in legal cases, defending freedom of speech and conscience, and the civil rights of educators and students. We give testimony before congressional and legislative committees and engage public support for worthy reforms. NAS holds national and regional meetings that focus on important issues and public policy debates in higher education today. Membership NAS membership is open to all who share a commitment to its core principles of fostering intellectual freedom and academic excellence in American higher education. A large majority of our members are current and former faculty members. We also welcome graduate and undergraduate students, teachers, college administrators, and independent scholars, as well as non-academic citizens who care about the future of higher education.     Dear Blues Friends, There's been considerable growth in the public's interest in “alternative” genres/styles of music (blues, folk, bluegrass, old-timey, ethnic/world, etc.). I’m not going to try to analyze the phenomena, but I rejoice in it. When the consumer demands variety, the wise shopkeeper responds. Besides playing and listening to the music, I enjoy reading biographies, autobiographies, various blues related historical material, and watching blues on video. I would like to see a bigger 'catalog,' variety, and selection of blues related books, literature, periodicals, and videos in the bookstores. I'm frequently asked, “What books can I read to learn more about the music and the people of the Blues?” That’s a tough question, as there are many hundreds of titles. I don't have time to read everything that's available. I enjoy reading, but I’m no book reviewer. The purpose of this blues related book and video list is to give folks a 'taste' of the broad variety of blues related books, literature, and video that are available. The list is not "complete," and it's always growing. Even though the list is quite long, please take your time looking it over. I'm pretty sure you'll see a number of titles and subjects that will pique your interest. In some cases, the list includes the author(s) name(s), publishing company name(s) and city. Though many of the books/videos are only listed by the title and author(s), with that basic information, all you have to do is walk into, or call, your local book store and ask if you can place an order.

    INTRODUCTION 1 INTRODUCTION Heather Addison, Mary Kate Goodwin-Kelly, and Elaine Roth In the early twenty-fi rst century, motherhood has been marked by extraordi- nary cultural visibility; indeed, it has become seemingly ubiquitous in public discourse. Naomi Wolf, Susan Douglas, Meredith Michaels, Judith Warner, and other feminist authors have written high-profi le books that explore experiences of motherhood in contemporary U.S. culture and criticize what they variously identify as the “misconceptions,” “myths,” or “madness” of maternal ideology.1 The release of such books has prompted reviews, discus- sions, and analyses of maternal issues in the New York Times and Newsweek, on Nightline and National Public Radio, and elsewhere. The publication of Lisa Belkin’s cover article “The Opt-Out Revolu- tion” in the October 23, 2003, issue of the New York Times Magazine struck and exposed a national nerve connected to motherhood as it relates to women’s employment, child-rearing practices, and public policy. The author’s evidence for the “opting out” trend she identifi es is primarily limited to a handful of Princeton University–educated mothers who left high-powered jobs to stay at home and raise their children. Despite the limited scope of Belkin’s investigation, “The Opt-Out Revolution” generated enormous buzz and garnered an unprecedented number of letters to the editor, while also becoming, at that time, the most emailed New York Times Magazine article in that publication’s history (Peskowitz 87).
