'What Ever Happened to Breakdancing?'
'What ever happened to breakdancing?' Transnational h-hoy/b-girl networks, underground video magazines and imagined affinities. Mary Fogarty Submitted in partial fulfillment Of the requirements for the degree of Interdisciplinary MA in Popular Culture Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario © November 2006 For my sister, Pauline 111 Acknowledgements The Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC) enabled me to focus full-time on my studies. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my committee members: Andy Bennett, Hans A. Skott-Myhre, Nick Baxter-Moore and Will Straw. These scholars have shaped my ideas about this project in crucial ways. I am indebted to Michael Zryd and Francois Lukawecki for their unwavering kindness, encouragement and wisdom over many years. Steve Russell patiently began to teach me basic rules ofgrammar. Barry Grant and Eric Liu provided comments about earlier chapter drafts. Simon Frith, Raquel Rivera, Anthony Kwame Harrison, Kwande Kefentse and John Hunting offered influential suggestions and encouragement in correspondence. Mike Ripmeester, Sarah Matheson, Jeannette Sloniowski, Scott Henderson, Jim Leach, Christie Milliken, David Butz and Dale Bradley also contributed helpful insights in either lectures or conversations. AJ Fashbaugh supplied the soul food and music that kept my body and mind nourished last year. If AJ brought the knowledge then Matt Masters brought the truth. (What a powerful triangle, indeed!) I was exceptionally fortunate to have such noteworthy fellow graduate students. Cole Lewis (my summer writing partner who kept me accountable), Zorianna Zurba, Jana Tomcko, Nylda Gallardo-Lopez, Seth Mulvey and Pauline Fogarty each lent an ear on numerous much needed occasions as I worked through my ideas out loud. -

UNDERNEATH the MUSIC Ellington
ABSTRACT Title of Document: UNDERNEATH THE MUSIC Ellington Rudi Robinson, Master of Fine Arts, 2008 Directed By: Professor, Jefferson Pinder, and Department of Art I see my work as an expression of a young man growing up in a household of music, books, and highly influential people. During the crack era that becomes prevalent under the tenure of President Reagan. The influences of the past will be the guides to surviving in a time when many friends parish as victims from the abundance of violence. The influences and tragedies are translated into motifs that are metaphors combined to create forms of communication. The hardwood floors, record jackets, tape, and railroad tracks provide a catalyst. These motifs are combined and isolated to tell an intense story that is layered with the history of the Civil Rights Movement, hip hop culture, drugs and music. The work is a conduit to release years of pain dealing with loss and oppression. It is also a vehicle to celebrate the philosophy that joy and pain are synonymous with life. UNDERNEATH THE MUSIC By Ellington Rudi Robinson Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts 2008 Advisory Committee: Professor Jefferson Pinder, Chair Professor Patrick Craig Professor Margo Humphries Professor Brandon Morse Rex Weil © Copyright by Ellington Robinson 2008 Preface The smell of the coffee bean aroma surrounded by the books and music, the phone rings. “Good afternoon, thank you for calling Borders Books and Music, how can I help you?” “El! What’s up man, I have some bad news.” This is an all too familiar greeting. -

Alex Prager: Farewell, Work Holiday Parties November 21, 2020–January 3, 2021 Los Angeles–based artist Alex Prager is known for making photographs and short films embellished with Technicolor fantasy but grounded in the pains and pleasures of the everyday. In this installation, Prager satirizes a specific part of working life, drawing on pop culture tropes to create a simulation of office holiday parties. The artist animates figurative sculptures with costumes, makeup, props, and sound, and places them in recognizable office-party situations, creating a strange yet celebratory scene that can be experienced in the round. “Through my work I’ve been able to process things in the world that I’m questioning or struggling with,” says Prager, “which is one of the many reasons I feel this piece is important for the current social climate. Right now, during this strange and life-altering time, many of us are reprioritizing our lives and figuring out what actually matters to us.” Curators: Liz Andrews, Director’s Office and Rita Gonzalez, Contemporary Art, LACMA Credit: This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. -
Garage House Music Whats up with That
Garage House Music whats up with that Future funk is a sample-based advancement of Nu-disco which formed out of the Vaporwave scene and genre in the early 2010s. It tends to be more energetic than vaporwave, including elements of French Home, Synth Funk, and making use of Vaporwave modifying techniques. A style coming from the mid- 2010s, often explained as a blend of UK garage and deep home with other elements and strategies from EDM, popularized in late 2014 into 2015, typically mixes deep/metallic/sax hooks with heavy drops somewhat like the ones discovered in future garage. One of the very first house categories with origins embeded in New York and New Jersey. It was named after the Paradise Garage bar in New york city that operated from 1977 to 1987 under the prominent resident DJ Larry Levan. Garage house established along with Chicago home and the outcome was home music sharing its resemblances, affecting each other. One contrast from Chicago house was that the vocals in garage house drew stronger impacts from gospel. Noteworthy examples consist of Adeva and Tony Humphries. Kristine W is an example of a musician involved with garage house outside the genre's origin of birth. Also understood as G-house, it includes very little 808 and 909 drum machine-driven tracks and often sexually explicit lyrics. See likewise: ghettotech, juke house, footwork. It integrates components of Chicago's ghetto house with electro, Detroit techno, Miami bass and UK garage. It includes four-on-the-floor rhythms and is normally faster than a lot of other dance music categories, at approximately 145 to 160 BPM. -

Rca Records to Release American Idol: Greatest Moments on October 1
THE RCA RECORDS LABEL ___________________________________________ RCA RECORDS TO RELEASE AMERICAN IDOL: GREATEST MOMENTS ON OCTOBER 1 On the heels of crowning Kelly Clarkson as America's newest pop superstar, RCA Records is proud to announce the release of American Idol: Greatest Moments on Oct. 1. The first full-length album of material from Fox's smash summer television hit, "American Idol," will include four songs by Clarkson, two by runner-up Justin Guarini, a song each by the remaining eight finalists, and “California Dreamin’” performed by all ten. All 14 tracks on American Idol: Greatest Moments, produced by Steve Lipson (Backstreet Boys, Annie Lennox), were performed on "American Idol" during the final weeks of the reality-based television barnburner. In addition to Kelly and Justin, the show's remaining eight finalists featured on the album include Nikki McKibbon, Tamyra Gray, EJay Day, RJ Helton, AJ Gil, Ryan Starr, Christina Christian, and Jim Verraros. Producer Steve Lipson, who put the compilation together in an unprecedented two-weeks time, finds a range of pop gems on the album. "I think Kelly's version of ‘Natural Woman' is really strong. Her vocals are brilliant. She sold me on the song completely. I like Christina's 'Ain't No Sunshine.' I think she got the emotion of it across well. Nikki is very good as well -- very underestimated. And Tamyra is brilliant too so there's not much more to say about her." RCA Records will follow American Idol: Greatest Moments with the debut album from “American Idol” champion Kelly Clarkson in the first quarter of 2003. -

American Idol, Flying Without Wings
American Idol, Flying Without Wings Everybody's looking for that something One thing that makes it all complete You'll find it in the strangest places Places you never knew it could be Some find it in the faces of their children Some find it in their lover's eyes Who can deny the joy it brings When you find that special thing You're flying without wings Some find it sharing every morning Some in the solitary lives You'll find it in the words of others A simple line can make you laugh or cry You'll find it in the deepest friendships The kind you cherish all your life And when you know how much that means You have found that special thing You are flying without wings So, impossible as they may seem You've got to fight for every dream Cause who to know which one you let go Would have made you complete But for me it's waking up beside you To watch the sunrise on your face To know that I can say I love you And in any given time or place It's little things that only I know Those are the things that make you mine, oh mine And it's like flying without wings Cause you're my special thing I'm flying without wings You're the place my life begins and you'll be where it ends I'm flying without wings And that's the joy it bring I'm flying without wings American Idol - Flying Without Wings w Teksciory.pl.
