Spermacoceae. Levantamento florístico. Vegetação ripária. Planície de inundação. Alto rio Paraná. THE FAMILY RUBIACEAE JUSS. IN STRECH OF THE RIPARIAN VEGETATION OF THE UPPER PARANÁ RIVER, BRASIL, WITH EMPHASIS ON TRIBE SPERMACOCEAE ABSTRACT The family Rubiaceae was described for Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, at 1789, and includes plants with various habits, like trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and rarely epiphytes. Their characteristics are, mainly, simple and opposite or sometimes whorled leaves; interpetiolar, rarely intrapetiolar stipules; stamens usually as many as the corolla lobes, nearly always fixed on the corolla tube; and inferior ovary. It is mainly distributed in the tropical regions of the South America. In Brazil, it is more represented in the Atlantic Forest, mainly, within the shrubs . It is one of the largest angiosperm families, and consist of about 637 genera and 10700 species . Taxonomic delimitations, mainly for subfamilies and tribes, it changed since the original descriptions, due to richness and variety of the morphological characteristics. It is one of the families with more floristic richness in the riparian vegetation of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul States, Brazil. The aims of this study were to show a checklist for species of Rubiaceae, with identification key, for the riparian vegetation of the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Were found 36 species and two varieties included in 26 genera, 10 tribes and four subfamilies. Key words: Rubiaceae. Spermacoceae. Floristic survey. Riparian vegetation. Floodplain. • Rubiaceae), and the Description of the New Species Galianthe Vasquezii from Peru and Colombia
Morphological and molecular data confirm the transfer of homostylous species in the typically distylous genus Galianthe (Rubiaceae), and the description of the new species Galianthe vasquezii from Peru and Colombia Javier Elias Florentín1, Andrea Alejandra Cabaña Fader1, Roberto Manuel Salas1, Steven Janssens2, Steven Dessein2 and Elsa Leonor Cabral1 1 Herbarium CTES, Instituto de Botánica del Nordeste, Corrientes, Argentina 2 Plant systematic, Botanic Garden Meise, Meise, Belgium ABSTRACT Galianthe (Rubiaceae) is a neotropical genus comprising 50 species divided into two subgenera, Galianthe subgen. Galianthe, with 39 species and Galianthe subgen. Ebelia, with 11 species. The diagnostic features of the genus are: usually erect habit with xylopodium, distylous flowers arranged in lax thyrsoid inflorescences, bifid stigmas, 2-carpellate and longitudinally dehiscent fruits, with dehiscent valves or indehiscent mericarps, plump seeds or complanate with a wing-like strophiole, and pollen with double reticulum, rarely with a simple reticulum. This study focused on two species that were originally described under Diodia due to the occurrence of fruits indehiscent mericarps: Diodia palustris and D. spicata. In the present study, classical taxonomy is combined with molecular analyses. As a result, we propose that both Diodia species belong to Galianthe subgen. Ebelia. The molecular position within Galianthe, based on ITS and ETS sequences, has been supported by the following morphological Submitted 10 June 2017 characters: thyrsoid, spiciform or cymoidal inflorescences, bifid stigmas, pollen grains Accepted 19 October 2017 with a double reticulum, and indehiscent mericarps. However, both species, unlike the Published 23 November 2017 remainder of the genus Galianthe, have homostylous flowers, so the presence of this Corresponding author type of flower significantly modifies the generic concept.

Box 392, Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles Author for correspondence: Sylvain G. Razafimandimbison, [email protected] Abstract Many monotypic genera with unique apomorphic characters have been difficult to place in the morphology-based classifications of the coffee family (Rubiaceae). We rigorously assessed the subfamilial phylogenetic position and generic status of three enigmatic genera, the Seychellois Glionnetia, the Southeast Asian Jackiopsis, and the Chinese Trailliaedoxa within Rubiaceae, using sequence data of four plastid markers (ndhF, rbcL, rps16, trnTF). The present study provides molecular phylogenetic support for positions of these genera in the subfamily Ixoroideae, and reveals the presence of a basal grade of morphologically distinct, monotypic genera (Crossopteryx, Jackiopsis, Scyphiphora, Trailliaedoxa, and Glionnetia, respectively) in the species-rich Vanguerieae alliance. These five genera may represent sole representatives of their respective lineages and therefore may carry unique genetic information. Their conservation status was assessed, applying the criteria set in IUCN Red List Categories. We consider Glionnetia and Jackiopsis Endangered. Scyphiphora is recognized as Near Threatened despite its extensive range and Crossopteryx as Least Concern.

  • Rubiaceae): Evolution of Major Clades, Development of Leaf-Like Whorls, and Biogeography
TAXON 59 (3) • June 2010: 755–771 Soza & Olmstead • Molecular systematics of Rubieae Molecular systematics of tribe Rubieae (Rubiaceae): Evolution of major clades, development of leaf-like whorls, and biogeography Valerie L. Soza & Richard G. Olmstead Department of Biology, University of Washington, Box 355325, Seattle, Washington 98195-5325, U.S.A. Author for correspondence: Valerie L. Soza, [email protected] Abstract Rubieae are centered in temperate regions and characterized by whorls of leaf-like structures on their stems. Previous studies that primarily included Old World taxa identified seven major clades with no resolution between and within clades. In this study, a molecular phylogeny of the tribe, based on three chloroplast regions (rpoB-trnC, trnC-psbM, trnL-trnF-ndhJ) from 126 Old and New World taxa, is estimated using parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Seven major clades are strongly supported within the tribe, confirming previous studies. Relationships within and between these seven major clades are also strongly supported. In addition, the position of Callipeltis, a previously unsampled genus, is identified. The resulting phylogeny is used to examine geographic distribution patterns and evolution of leaf-like whorls in the tribe. An Old World origin of the tribe is inferred from parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions. At least eight subsequent dispersal events into North America occurred from Old World ancestors. From one of these dispersal events, a radiation into North America, followed by subsequent diversification in South America, occurred. Parsimony and likelihood ancestral state reconstructions infer the ancestral whorl morphology of the tribe as composed of six organs. Whorls composed of four organs are derived from whorls with six or more organs.

Its sister tribe Knoxieae con- tains a large number of herbaceous taxa, but the number of woody taxa is higher compared to Spermacoceae. The occurrence of herbaceous and woody species within the same group raises the question whether the woody taxa are derived from herbaceous taxa (i.e. secondary woodiness), or whether woodiness represents the ancestral state (i.e. primary woodiness). Microscopic observations of wood anatomy are combined with an independent molecu- lar phylogeny to answer this question. † Methods Observations of wood anatomy of 21 woody Spermacoceae and eight woody Knoxieae species, most of them included in a multi-gene molecular phylogeny, are carried out using light microscopy. † Key Results Observations of wood anatomy in Spermacoceae support the molecular hypothesis that all the woody species examined are secondary derived.

Revista Brasil. Bot., V.33, n.4, p.661-676, out.-dec. 2010 Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region1 POLYHANNA GOMES2,3 and MARCCUS ALVES2 (received: March 19, 2010; accepted: October 21, 2010) ABSTRACT – (Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region). Floristic composition and structure of vegetation were studied in two rocky outcrop areas in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. From April 2007 to September 2008, 18 monthly field trips were carried out. Vascular plants were randomly collected throughout the outcrop areas. For structural analysis, 30 plots of 1 × 1 m were set in the vegetation islands. The checklist presented combines 211 species (69 families and 168 genera), although only 56 species were collected in the plots. Fabaceae (18 spp.; 8.5%), Asteraceae (17 spp.; 8%), Orchidaceae (13 spp.; 6.1%), Euphorbiaceae (13 spp.; 6.1%), Bromeliaceae (10 spp.; 4.7%), and Poaceae (eight spp.; 3.8%) are the richest families. Overall, 1,792 shrub and herbaceous specimens were counted in the plots. The Shannon-Wiener (H) diversity index values were 2.572 and 2.547 nats individual-1. The species that presented the highest absolute abundance values (number of plants) had low frequencies in the plots and vice-versa. The biological spectrum had a high proportion of phanerophytes and therophytes, followed by cryptophytes, chamaephytes, and hemicryptophytes. The studied flora shares floristic components similar to other rocky outcrop areas of the semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil, including in relation to dominant groups in the vegetation structure.
