Parmi ses plus grands sanctuaires, on trouve ceux d'Épidaure, de Pergame et de Cos. Le dieu atteint son âge d'or au cours des ne et Ille siècles ap. J.-C. Il est par ailleurs un personnage complexe. Toutefois, à la lecture des dix livres de la Description de la Grèce ou Périégèse de Pausanias, écrite au ne siècle ap. J.-C., nous faisons face à l'image d'un dieu tout-puissant n'ayant connu aucun changement au fil du temps. Pausanias semble avoir une vision figée d'Asclépios, bien que très respectueuse du grand dieu. Cette vision semble avoir été représentative de son époque : la Seconde Sophistique, courant littéraire du ne siècle ap. J.-C., proposait le retour à une religion grecque très proche de celle de l'époque classique. Par contre, Pausanias est original en ce qu'il relate la version messénienne du mythe d'Asclépios - version que nous n'avons que rarement croisée chez un autre auteur- nous laissant avec l'impression qu'il devait exister deux divinités nommées Asclépios : un héros divinisé de la cité de Messène et le dieu médecin connu à travers l'Empire romain. Mots clés : Grèce antique ; nesiècle ap. J.-C. ; Mythes ; Asclépios ; Pausanias. INTRODUCTION Le « Haut Empire » - s'étendant conventionnellement du règne d'Auguste qui débute en 30 av. J. -C. à la fin de celui de Commode en 192 de notre ère - est généralement considéré comme l'âge d'or de l'Empire romain. Ce dernier a alors atteint sa plus grande expansion et ses provinces, surtout orientales, sont prospères. La paix romaine apporte la sécurité sur les routes terrestres et navales, permettant aux voyages de se multiplier et au commerce de s'amplifier. Cette période voit parallèlement évoluer la piété des populations grecques. La religion traditionnelle est conservée officiellement : puisqu'elle est considérée comme le ciment de la société, les rituels et les fêtes religieuses sont encore pratiqués fidèlement. Même Auguste, dans la partie occidentale de 1'Empire , a été un fervent adepte des cultes traditionnels romains, promulguant des lois organisant leur pratique. En revanche, il semble qu'au cours des siècles, la religion traditionnelle ait perdu de la force chez 1' élite grecque. Elle est moins assidue aux cultes de dieux 1 anthropomorphes régissant 1'ensemble de la nature et la destinée des hommes • De plus, ces dieux répondent de moins en moins aux prières de leurs adeptes et leurs 2 effets touchent moins les hommes. Plutarque parle même de la mort des oracles ; les Anciens ne les consultent plus autant qu'avant pour trouver réponse à leurs interrogations et ce, même pour la Pythie de Delphes, longtemps l'oracle le plus prestigieux du monde grec. Il nous est cependant impossible de déterminer si la piété personnelle de ces aristocrates correspond à ces signes extérieurs, comme l' incitent à à le croire les écrits religieux de moins en moins nombreux ou la popularité croissante de certains dieux orientaux. Consideration of these observations and of other recent scholarship has led us to reconsider the significance of Ayios Stephanos in the Late Bronze Age, the location(s) of ancient Helos, and the network of premodern roads in the region. The photographs were taken by R.H.S. in 1956 during his extensive survey of southern Laconia, on behalf of the British School, when he first discovered the site of Ayios Stephanos2. AYIOS STEPHANOS AND ITS HISTORY Ayios Stephanos lies in South Laconia on the western edge of the modern Helos Plain (Fig. 1). The excavations that were undertaken there in 1959–77 by the late Lord William Taylour, under the auspices of the British School, have revealed a coastal settlement with a long history, which can be reconstructed in detail from a stratigraphic sequence that is, for the Bronze Age, almost complete. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The presentation of the historical facts and personalities that played a leading and vital role in the formation of the archaeological affairs in Greece is realized in three sections: archaeology in Greece during the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st centuries. Crucial historical events, remarkable people, such as politicians and scholars, institutions and societies, are introduced in chronological order, with the hope that the reader will acquire a coherent idea of the evolution of archaeology in Greece from the time of its genesis in the 19th century to the present. References to these few people and events do not suggest by any means that there were not others. The personal decisions and scientific work of native Greek archaeologists past and present has contributed significantly to the same goal: the development of archaeology in Greece.
