The book features many never before seen items including: George Harrison handwritten letter written to Cavern Club DJ Bob Wooler from Hamburg, unseen Paul McCartney images from his historic performance at The Cavern Club in 1999, a collection of replica handbills and opening programme, restored images of the Beatles at The Cavern Club, Bob Wooler handwritten notes „An introduction to the Cavern“ from his personal collection, colour images of The Cavern Club/Mathew St circa 1966 from Ray McFall's personal collection, exclusive 60th Anniversary 250GSM art print poster by original Cavern poster designer Tony Booth. The Cavern Club opened its doors on 16 January 1957 and undoubtedly, without the 292 gigs The Beatles played there between February 1961 and August 1963, The Cavern's story would be a very different one. But they did play those 292 gigs and The Cavern was firmly on the world's musical map. Today The Cavern is a thriving live music venue, still attracting big names. Artists to have played here in more recent years include; Oasis, Travis, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Jessie J, Jake Bugg, Elbow and of course, in 1999, the return of Sir Paul McCartney. 304 pages of glorious history, told in 25,000 words, packaged in unique anniversary slipcase. Limited edition of 1,957 to commemorate the date when the club first opened. Please note that the books are not individually numbered. Beatles Museum: Von Paul McCartney stammt das Vorwort. • A History of International Beatleweek (PDF)
The History of International Beatleweek International Beatleweek celebrates the most famous band in the world in the city where it was born – attracting thousands of Fab Four fans and dozens of bands to Liverpool each year. The history of Beatleweek goes back to 1977 when Liverpool’s first Beatles Convention was held at Mr Pickwick’s club in Fraser Street, off London Road. The two-day event, staged in October, was organised by legendary Cavern Club DJ Bob Wooler and Allan Williams, entrepreneur and The Beatles’ early manager, and it included live music, guest speakers and special screenings. In 1981, Liz and Jim Hughes – the pioneering couple behind Liverpool’s pioneering Beatles attraction, Cavern Mecca – took up the baton and arranged the First Annual Mersey Beatle Extravaganza at the Adelphi Hotel. It was a one-day event on Saturday, August 29 and the special guests were Beatles authors Philip Norman, Brian Southall and Tony Tyler. In 1984 the Mersey Beatle event moved to St George’s Hall where guests included former Cavern Club owner Ray McFall, Beatles’ press officer Tony Barrow, John Lennon’s uncle Charles Lennon and ‘Father’ Tom McKenzie. Cavern Mecca closed in 1984, and after the city council stepped in for a year to keep the event running, in 1986 Cavern City Tours was asked to take over the Mersey Beatle Convention. It has organised the annual event ever since. International bands started to make an appearance in the late 1980s, with two of the earliest groups to make the journey to Liverpool being Girl from the USA and the USSR’s Beatle Club.

  • Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of the Beatles
MOVIES ABOUT THE BEATLES Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of The Beatles In 1978, Elvis – The Movie premiered on American television. The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e. Luis Valdez’ La Bamba (1987) about Richie Valens, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and Iain Softley’s Backbeat (1993). More recently, Holly- wood has produced a string of highly successful TV and cinema biogra- phies of musical heroes. The most notable films and series are The Rat Pack (1998) about the lives and times of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., Ray (2004) about Ray Charles, Stoned (2005) about The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and – again – Elvis (2005). Starting with Birth of The Beatles, The Beatles’ history has been dramatized in various forms for television as well as for the cinema. While The Beat- les’ early group history has been dealt with in Birth of The Beatles (1979), Backbeat (1993), and In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), John Lennon’s private life was explored in John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) and The Hours and Times (1991).

  • Historical Approaches to Merseybeat: Delivery, Affinity and Diversity
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Northumbria Research Link Historical approaches to Merseybeat: Delivery, Affinity And Diversity Ian Inglis University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK Introduction Even a cursory inspection of the literature about popular music reveals that perceptions of an association between music and place are frequent and unremarkable. Indeed, there are so many attempts to describe and define musical styles by containing them within a geographical category that it could be argued that the practice has become less a convention than a cliché. Recent analyses of specific sounds assumed to ‘belong’ to a region or city include Coventry (Frith 1988); Dunedin, Manchester (Shuker 1998); New Orleans, Chicago, Texas, Memphis, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Southern California, New York City (DeCurtis & Henke 1992); Detroit (Carson 1999; Boland & Bond 2002; True 2004); Nashville (Hemphill 1975; Streissguth 1997; Jensen 1998); Seattle (Morrell 1993); and Los Angeles (Hoskyns 1996). But does this routine exercise in labelling reflect the existence of authentic causal connections between a city’s social practices and its cultural products (in this case, its music)? Or is it merely a shorthand device for naming and marketing musical outputs that actually have very little in common other than their point of origin? In order to illuminate such a discussion, I want to concentrate on the specific example of the Mersey sound or, as it has been frequently labelled, ‘Merseybeat’. There are a number of reasons for choosing it. One is that it represented, in 1963, the first time in the history of British popular music when a sound and a city were bracketed together in this way.
