They were sold out here last December and I will be disappointed if we do not have another sellout this year. They walked off at IBMA last year with multiple awards and are promis- ing more of the same again this year. One of the hot- test acts in bluegrass, they are made up of the incom- parable Adam Steffey on mandolin and vocals, Keith Garrett on guitar and vocals, multi-talented instrumen- talist Ron Stewart on banjo, John Bowman on fiddle and vocals, and Harold Nixon on bass. They are enter- ing their 4th year as a unit with their original cast still together. Listing each with a particular instru- ment is difficult, as all are multi- instrumentalists and they pass the instruments around throughout their performance. Simply put, one of the best bands on the circuit. December 29 - Darrell Webb Band We are venturing into new territory this year by adding a second show to our lineup on Saturday, December 29th to bring in the New Year early. The attendance at this show will help determine if we will be able to continue to add dates going forth. The Darrell Webb Band will perform on our stage on this date. Darrell has played here several times before as a member of Audie Blaylock & Redline.

The band is comprised of four of the most talented and promising acoustic roots musicians in the country. Patrick McAvinue, one of the most in-demand and highly respected bluegrass fiddlers in the country, takes charge with his virtuosic, powerful and musical approach to the fiddle. Clawhammer banjo wizard Brad Kolodner adds his playful, driving, melodic and groovy Old-Time touch. Sean McComiskey, an incredibly talented Irish button accordion player, soars through the tunes and fills the gaps with his soulful playing. The versatile bassist Alex Lacquement drives the train, locking everything together with his commanding and tasteful choices. Drawing from separate musical backgrounds, the four members have found a common ground on which to develop their unique approach. Charm City Junction embodies the essence of what acoustic roots music is all about, a shared and burning passion for blazing new trails while respecting the tradition. They are torchbearers with a clear message that the future of acoustic music is in good hands. • Hollywood VFD to Host Annual Bluegrass Festival Fundraiser
Hollywood VFD to host annual bluegrass festival fundraiser Posted by Alan Van Wormer On 04/15/2018 HOLLYWOOD, Md. - The Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad will present its annual Bluegrass Festival on Saturday May 12, 2018 at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 11 am and the show starts at Noon. Weather permitting, the event will be held outside. All proceeds from the day’s event will go toward the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad Building Fund. “Honoring tradition through innovation”, that’s Audie Blaylocks (pictured right) motto. His mellow, wailing tenor and lightning-fast guitar picking have made him one of the names to watch in the world of traditional bluegrass. There’s something in a name; and Redline, the name of Audie Blaylock’s hot-shot band, could not be more fitting. Blaylock's vision for his sound involves an occasional glance in the rear view mirror, but with a heavy foot planted firmly on the accelerator, his music has a way of driving hard into the future. Audie Blaylock’s musical journey is a familiar one in bluegrass music, having grown up in an Appalachian musical family, his musical education started early and led to him sharing the stage with some of bluegrass’ finest and most respected artists, including first generation bluegrass character and giant, Jimmy Martin, as well as Red Allen, Harley Allen, Lynn Morris, Michael Cleveland, and Rhonda Vincent. Yet a true artist is never content in the passenger’s seat, and this is where Blaylock’s path diverges from the familiar, well-beaten path on this old mountain side.

Recreating and Deconstructing the Shifting Politics of (Bluegrass) Festivals Jordan LeAnne Laney Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Alliance for Social Political Ethical and Cultural Thought Katrina M. Powell, Chair Elizabeth C. Fine Anthony Kwame Harrison Barbara Ellen Smith Max O. Stephenson Jr. August 8, 2018 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Appalachian Studies, Bluegrass Music, Critical Regionalism, Ethnography, Qualitative Methods, Feminist Methodologies, Festivals Copyright (2018) Recreating and Deconstructing the Shifting Politics of (Bluegrass) Festivals Jordan LeAnne Laney ABSTRACT Utilizing archival research from Berea College's Appalachian Sound Archives and Appalachian State University's Belk Special Collection, more than 45 survey results, 15 extensive interviews, and participant observations from 15 festival field sites, I examine bluegrass festivals as sites of identity production through feminist methodologies and a participatory ethnographic approach. This requires careful analysis of the nature of the genre’s audience and audience members’ investments in the process of framing the performance of bluegrass music’s history through a shared historical narrative. More broadly, this analysis clarifies the nuanced role of bluegrass festivals in constructing generalizations about place-based identities, race, and gender within the performative space of festivals. In this assessment, the political and economic actions generated as a result of bluegrass performances are explored as temporal and spatial organizers for the (re)production and consumption of generalized ideals which are projected onto both literal and figurative southern stages. I perform this research utilizing the conceptual frameworks of theories of space and place, politics of culture, and feminist methods, combined through critical regionalism.

  • Fervor Coulee Bluegrass' Favorite Bluegrass Albums of 2016
Fervor Coulee Bluegrass' Favorite Bluegrass Albums of 2016 Donald Teplyske | December 11, 2016 t the end of each year, writers and broadcasters get to indulge themselves and-one hopes-their readers and listeners with their judgements on the year past. I've spent considerable time reviewing the bluegrass albums I heard during the past year, and have come up with my definitive (at least for today) list of Favorite Bluegrass Albums of 2016. Of course, your mileage will vary: I once received a cranky email from the father of a fairly prominent bluegrasser whose album I didn't include on such a list several years ago. For those such inclined, I repeat-these are my favorite bluegrass albums of the year. Not the best, 'cause that is silly. And all I can base it on is those albums I've heard, and maybe I somehow missed your son's album...talk to his publicist. 1. Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands- "The Hazel & Alice Sessions" (Spruce and Maple) Laurie Lewis places Hazel Dickens with the bluegrass vocal big-three: Bill Monroe, Carter Stanley, and Lester Flatt. Alice Gerrard is a fearsome master of vocal folk, old-time, and bluegrass. "The Hazel and Alice Sessions" is not only a worthy tribute to a key bluegrass partnership, but an entertaining and formable collection of music. For me, undoubtedly the bluegrass album of the year. Nominated for a Grammy this time out, I could listen to this one every day. 2. Sister Sadie- "Sister Sadie" (Pinecastle) It remains rare for an all-female outfit featuring well- established personalities to come together to perform and record.
