SMBA is listed as one of only 5 current association members of The International Bluegrass Music Museum.

To check this out simply enter www.bluegrass-museum.org, click on membership and giving, on the list of options on the left side of your screen. Then scroll down again to associations under membership and giving, again on the left of the screen. There are 5 associations currently listed there at the bottom of the Assn. Membership blurb. We are one of them.

Then again go to the list on the left of your screen and click on Worldwide Bluegrass. Click again on the left under Worldwide Bluegrass on Bluegrass Associations and scroll down to Seven Mountains. This is a link to our website.

A well spent donation to IBMM on our part as we get the benefit of a worldwide link to our website, national recognition as a member association and we help in funding the activities of the IBMM.

This is an outstanding museum and one that the bluegrass community and our members can be proud of, and a desti- nation worth the trip for anyone interested in bluegrass and it's history.

SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY December 8 - The Boxcars

The Boxcars will be performing their second straight show on our stage on December 8th. They were sold out here last December and I will be disappointed if we do not have another sellout this year. They walked off at IBMA last year with multiple awards and are promis- ing more of the same again this year. One of the hot- test acts in bluegrass, they are made up of the incom- parable Adam Steffey on mandolin and vocals, Keith Garrett on guitar and vocals, multi-talented instrumen- talist on banjo, John Bowman on fiddle and vocals, and Harold Nixon on bass. They are enter- ing their 4th year as a unit with their original cast still together. Listing each with a particular instru- ment is difficult, as all are multi- instrumentalists and they pass the instruments around throughout their performance. Simply put, one of the best bands on the circuit.

December 29 - Darrell Webb Band

We are venturing into new territory this year by adding a second show to our lineup on Saturday, December 29th to bring in the New Year early. The attendance at this show will help determine if we will be able to continue to add dates going forth.

The Darrell Webb Band will perform on our stage on this date. Darrell has played here several times before as a member of Audie Blaylock & Redline. He will also be remembered for his fine vocals as a member of & the Rage, Wildfire, and JD Crowe and the New South.

Darrell has assembled a great group of young pickers out of East Tennessee State U, the learning place of choice for young bluegrass musicians, these days, to compliment his traditional up-tempo bluegrass style. Jake Joins is one of the top new stylists on the Dobro, Jared Hensley on guitar, and Jeremy Arrowood on bass round out the rest of this fine group. All contribute fine vocals in backing Darrell. At this writing, Darrell does not have a regular banjo player, but I’m sure that this position will be filled very capably by a first class musician come Dec. 29th.

This will be the first trip to our stage for this fine new band. Let’s close out the old year with a full house to welcome the Darrell Webb Band.

SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY January 12 - Jerry Butler and the Blu-J’s

Our January show will feature Jerry Butler and the Blu-J's. This Knoxville, TN based band is on fast track to becoming one of the top up-and-coming headliners on the bluegrass circuit. Some of our members will recall Jerry's strong per- formance here at Seven Mountains 2 year's ago. Jerry possesses one of the purest voices in bluegrass. His ren- ditions of country flavored ballads takes us back in time to the days of the classic country singers like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin and others. If Jerry would have been performing in the 60's and 70's, I have no doubt that he would have been a big star on the country circuit. He brings this style to us in his bluegrass performances every time. Also he de- livers a very powerful message in the gospel numbers he performs so well, and he tells me that he will have a new all-gospel CD just finished with him when he performs for us in January. In addition to Jerry on Guitar and lead vocals, the Blu-J's consist of Derek Vaden on Banjo, Guitar and vocals, Lee Chapman on Bass, and Barron Rogers on Mandolin. Several members who were here for his last concert told me that Jerry was one of the best that we've had. Please come out for our January show and hear this fine band.

February 9 - Balsam Range

Not much more has to be said about Balsam Range. They blew away the full house to which they played at Goodwill Fire Co. a few years ago They won the IBMA, Song of the Year in 2011, "Trains I Missed", an incredible song. Since their last visit to SMBA, they have had 3 more chart topping CD's, including their present one "Papertown", which includes the present No.1 hit, “Any Old Road”, written by my friends Jerry Salley, , and BR banjo man, Marc Pruitt. Their first CD was a best seller and each one following has been even better. Several of their previous releases are fast becoming bluegrass standards in a very short time. I have to admit that of all the bands performing today, this is my all-time favorite. Not on- ly are these guys friends of mine, they are fine Christian gentlemen, great musicians and outstand- ing vocalists. Buddy Melton, Darren Nicholson, Tim Surrett, Caleb Smith, and Marc Pruitt are Bal- sam Range, and simply put, the best out there today. Their vocals, harmony, and musicianship are unsurpassed, whether it be a slow ballad, a hard-driving bluegrass song, or a great gospel rendi- tion. Please make every effort to attend this performance, one of the best you will ever hear. Simply, the best!

OUR OWN SUE “THE TRAIN” MCKINSEY

An excerpt from Sue’s email about the Rhonda Vincent concert

I am friends with Brenda Lawson, in the Bluegrass world known as Sweet Brenda, an MC & DJ. She is also best friends with Rhonda Vincent. I talked to Brenda Friday before the show & told her we were going to the dinner/show. She said “say Hi to Rhonda for her.” OK fast forward to show, we are right up front, our table is center stage. I’m wondering how I will tell her Bren- da said Hi. Then right before the show ended she said she talked to Sweet Brenda earlier & that there was a mutual friend in the audience. She mentioned my name & I waved to let her know where I was. I was thinking that was the end of story but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. She calls me up on stage. Asked questions did I live in VA & come to PA for the show, no I live in PA, how do I know Brenda, from going to many bluegrass festi- vals in VA, what town do I live in, what do I do, small talk. Again thinking but nooooooooooooooooooooooo! Rhonda is going to sing a train song, I even forgot what it was, & I was to be the TRAIN. I had to whistle like a train when she sang the word “train”. Good sport that I am I did my best. I could see Kenny wanted to crawl under the table as he is not one to draw atten- tion to himself & there was his other half on stage making a spectacle of herself. And he even knew lots & lots of people there! I always hear the Bluegrassers are the best people & make the best friends. You hear it from the stage, at their music tables, on FB, from the MC, just about everywhere. Kenny & I have made some very good friendships from BGF that will remain our whole lives.

SMBA ORIGIN - BY WALT CRIDER

As with most successful organizations, we started small and evolved to what you know today. Thirty years may not seem like much, but can be one third of a life time. A lot of people give untold hours to a hobby or interest. This describes Wynne Fishel and Ina Jane Atkinson from the west shore area of Harrisburg, Pa. These girls followed a lot of bluegrass in the 1970’s and 80’s. They frequented Highway Pizza in State College and met the Whetstone Run band. They realized we have a Dante’s Pizza in New Cumberland, now Gullifty’s, owned by the same people that owned Highway Pizza. Why not get some bands to play here? Whetstone Run did play here a lot and they got other greats like Bill Harrell, Del McCoury, Bluegrass Cardinals, Country Gazette, Joe Val, Special Consensus, Tex Logan and Jimmy Arnold, Bob Paisley, Johnson Mountain Boys. A lot of local bands played there, in- cluding mine, so Thursday nights at Dante’s was a popular place. Wynne came up with the idea of starting a bluegrass organization. After a show at Dante’s, she told Ina Jane ”Why can’t we?” The next day Wynne went to the state capital to obtain the proper documents. Jointly they completed the paperwork and the club was started. The name came from the seven mountain ridges you must cross to go from Harrisburg to State College, between the two Pizza establishments. Several peo- ple said “it would never work”. They met with a lot of Thursday night regulars at Dante’s on a Sunday in September of 1982 to start. Attending besides Wynne and Ina Jane was Gene and Esther Yost, Jon Raemore, Skip Shaub, myself and oth- ers. I’m sorry I can’t remember all. Beginnings were modest, a monthly jam session at Stony Creek barn, Em- bers Hotel, Enola American Legion, Willow Mills Park, New Cumberland Fire hall, Harrisburg River Rescue facility, and the Fishing Creek Fire hall. Dues were $5.00 per family, an annual picnic at someone’s home. A monthly newsletter was issued. The first public show was held at the Stony Creek Barn in Dauphin on March 17th, 1984 with Keystone Grass. I could name numerous individuals who spent many hours contributing to this club, two things in common are their love of the music and their friendship among the members. I want to thank Ina Jane Atkinson, Esther Yost and Bob Bishard for their input to this story. Ina Jane looked at our website recently and declared: “I am very proud to have been at the beginning of this club’s organization. Wynne and I had no idea that it would become such a success!

Walt Crider

A note from your newsletter editor: Grass Express, a central PA bluegrass band that Jon Raemore, our music com- mittee chairperson, and I were members of back then played Dante’s once a month for a long time. We were the first band to require Dante’s to limit the number of people to enter the restaurant at any given time in order to meet fire and safety regulations.

CARROLL COUNTY RAMBLERS HONORED

ALTA AWARDS HONOR PILLARS OF MARYLAND HERITAGE Ceremony and concert link Marylanders to living cultural traditions BALTIMORE, MD (October 16, 2012) – Maryland Traditions, the Folklife Program of the Maryland State Arts Council, today announced the ALTA (Achievement in Living Traditions and Arts) Award recipients for 2012. The awards recognize outstanding stewards of living traditions in the State of Maryland and will be presented to three recipients at a Dec. 1 free awards ceremony and concert at the Montgomery College Cul- tural Arts Center on the Montgomery College Takoma Park – Silver Spring campus. ALTA awards are presented annually to an individual or group, a place and a tradition that embody and help to preserve Maryland’s cultural heritage. The 2012 ALTA Award recipients are: The Carroll County Ram- blers (People), Sparrows Point Steel Mill and its Communities (Place), and J. Gruber’s Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack (Tradition).

PEOPLE: The Carroll County Ramblers are a bluegrass group based in Taneytown, Maryland (Carroll County). Founded by Dottie and Leroy Eyler in 1961, the group has mentored generations of bluegrass musi- cians throughout the Maryland/Pennsylvania/Virginia/West Virginia quad-state region. For more than a dec- ade they have been hosts and featured performers of an ongoing music series at the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Company Hall near Westminster. Their style is best described as “traditional bluegrass” and their original songs chronicle local history and the everyday fabric of family life (“Grandma’s Sewing Machine”). When Leroy Eyler passed away in 1995, and Dottie Eyler retired from performing in 2010, leadership of the group passed to daughter Bonny Eyler (bass, vocals) and son Dale Eyler (fiddle, vocals). For 51 years, the Carroll County Ramblers have been staples of bluegrass festivals throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Mike Auldridge also honored during ALTA Awards

In addition to the ceremony, this year’s ALTA Awards includes a special tribute in honor of Mike Auldridge, a co-founder and former member of the Bethesda-based bluegrass band The Seldom Scene. A lifelong Marylander, Auldridge is known internationally for his distinctive style on the Dobro. He was awarded a 2012 National Heritage Fellowship—the nation’s highest honor for traditional arts—by the Na- tional Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for his role in pioneering contemporary bluegrass and country music.

A Note about Mike Auldridge

Mike is not in good health. He is battling cancer.

Please keep Mike in your prayers as we approach this holiday season.
