We are nearing the March 31 scholarship application deadline. Scholarship recipients will be announced in our next newsletter.

Please contact our Scholarship Chairperson, Kristen Schneider, at (717) 443-8359 to learning more about our scholarship program, or to inquire on a donation.

An application for the scholarship can be found on page 7 of this newsletter.

Sat March 31 - Dave Adkins Band

Possessor of one of the most powerful voices in bluegrass, Dave Adkins will simply blow you away with his vocals. Sounding like a combination of bluegrass great Dave Ev- ans and country star Travis Tritt, Dave has quietly and quickly piled up the hits and become one of the rising stars in bluegrass over the last several years. You NEED to come out, fill the hall, and hear this fabulous singer. This will be one of his rare dates in this part of the country to have a chance to see this real talent. Dave, on lead vocals and guitar is joined by Mitchell Brown on bass and harmo- ny vocals. Mitchell was a longtime member of the late, great Charlie Louvin’s band and is a Nashville session player when he’s not touring with Dave. Barry Crabtree is on banjo and has a long list of cre- dentials playing with Larry Sparks, James King, Wildfire, Dale Ann Bradley and the great . Carl Caldwell is on mandolin and had played previously with Dale Ann Bradley, Dave Evans and several other top bands. Multi-instrumentalist, Kyle Leapard is on lead gui- tar and of special note is a veteran of the Iraq war, having served there while on a 6 year tour of active duty and still serves as reservist. Please don’t skip this concert because you don’t know their names. This is a first class collection of stalwarts in bluegrass and you will be royally entertained. I hope to see all of you in attendance.

Sat April 14 - Flatt Lonesome

What more can I say about these great kids in this fabulous band that has played our stage the last two years? They are easily, the most popular band that has ever played here, as evidenced by the record 390 fans who packed the place last year for a great per- formance. This year’s return engagement promises to be a repeat of last year. They have another chart top- ping CD project out and have garnered some addi- tional awards since they played here last year. Kelsi Harrigill on mandolin and Charli Robertson on fiddle will wow our audience with their perfect vocals aided by the fine voice of Charli’s twin brother, Buddy Robertson on guitar. Filling out the band will be Kel- si’s husband, Paul Harrigill on banjo, Michael Stockton on Dobro and Dominic Illingworth on bass. This band has been together with no changes since they started and their performanc- es illustrate that fact dramatically. A can’t miss show!

Sat May 12 - Kevin Prater Band

This will be our final show for the 2017-18 season as we close up shop for the summer festival season. A new band will be on our stage but an old favorite leading it. Kevin Prater heads up his band for our last show of the season. Kevin has played here several times in past years as the singing partner for the late, great James King. For 14 years, Kevin was a large part of the James King sound that was so popular with our members. He possesses one of the strongest voices in bluegrass and has put together a fine band which specializes in the hard driving traditional bluegrass that our audiences love most. They will be doing a mix of bluegrass and bluegrass gospel which they have become known for. Kevin is on lead vocals and mandolin backed by founding member Tom Timberlake on vocals, guitar and banjo. Tom is also a former member of the James King Band. Danny Stillner is on bass and vocals. The brother tandem of Jake and Adam Burrows rounds out this fine band. Jake is on banjo, dobro and vocals and Adam fires up the band on fiddle and vocals as well. Anyone who liked and loved James King will love this band and James’ influence shows throughout their performances. A fine band to finish out the year and another show you must mark, can’t miss!

Don’t Give Your Heart To A Rambler A Book Review by Walt Crider

Don’t Give Your Heart To A Rambler is book about Jimmy Martin written by Barbara Martin Ste- phens, the woman he considered his wife. They had four children over the years from 1953 to 1966. This book tells all about their life together, the good and the bad. It is a must read for Jimmy Martin fans. This is a woman's story of the world of bluegrass and one of its most colorful mem- bers. Jimmy’s detailed personal life has never been told so thoroughly until now. Barbara Martin lived with the man and served as his manager and booking agent during the glory days when he was known as “Mr. Good ‘N Country”. She endured 14 years of ups and downs, quite often at Jim- my’s whims, infidelity and drinking. Jimmy never became a member of the for two reasons. One is fairly obvious, because of his lifestyle, and the other I won’t reveal here, but is in the book. After reading, I contacted Barbara via email to discuss the book. She’s a very pleasant 82 year old with a great outlook on life. She married computer programmer, Chuck Stephens in 1970 and a new life was in store for her. Barbara has visited six continents and is looking forward to going to Antarctica. She is in contact with her children and able to watch them grow with families of their own. She lost her husband, Chuck, after 41 years of marriage in 2012. Jimmy married Teresa Sutherland from Pennsylvania in 1988, which lasted three years. There is a connection here as her fa- ther is Sam Sutherland, a Seven Mountains Club member. Their wedding can be seen on Youtube: “Jimmy Martin Wed- ding”. The wedding was held at Doyle Lawson’s festival and you will recognize some people there. It is a reunion of past band members also. The best part of this video is the last two songs “If I Could Be Living When Jesus Comes” and “Stormy Waters” accompanied by Doyle Lawson, Paul Williams and their son Ray Martin. “Stormy Waters” is Barbara’s favorite gospel song written by Jimmy. Some of Jimmy’s songs written about her are “She Left Me Again”, “It’s Not Like Home” and “Hold Whatcha Got”. Barbara’s favorite band configuration was with the as well as Paul Williams, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe and Bill Emerson. She loved it when their sons Ray and Timmy were performing with Jimmy also. Jimmy was a millionaire at the end of his life and had been for many years. His estate is still in probate and is on going in the state of Tennessee to this day. The family has never had control of the assets. Barbara’s information about this book and the audio book is available at her website: www.dontgiveyour heart.com.

Our 36th year!

Seven Mountains Bluegrass club members, this is our 36th year. I am the only founding mem- ber still active in our organization. I would like you to tell me how you came to know and join us. Maybe you saw it in the newspaper or a friend dragged you to one of our concerts. Please email me at [email protected]. I want to do a future article and include as many re- sponses as I can. Thank you, Walt Crider
